This Couple Created an Amazing DIY Bookshelf That is Beyond Pinterest-Worthy
This bookshelf is eye candy!
Jessica and Sinclair are two ordinary parents from Australia who love browsing on Pinterest for inspiration and home ideas 🏠 – just like many of us! 🙋🏼♀️ But when this couple stumbled upon a photo of a unique bookshelf, they were immediately inspired and knew they had to give it a try themselves.
Jessica works in education and Sinclair is a builder, so they are always up for learning and implementing new things, especially when it comes to DIY home projects. In fact, here’s what Jessica said when she showed her husband the idea…
“When I showed Sinclair, he almost had a heart attack. We knew we had to try it.”
So, with the help of a graphic artist teacher that Jessica knew, they measured out the dimensions for the project and ordered $900 custom-made panels from Aussie Cut. 😱
They arranged the panels into boxes according to the Pinterest picture they saw – and then the building adventure began! After 16 hours, the couple finished the bookshelf project.
“We started making all the boxes, and Sinclair created a fake MDF wall so we could draw the boxes in the right places. Then, we had to fix the wall onto our normal studded wall, and then we screwed the boxes onto the MDF wall.”
…and we think it turned out amazing! 🤩 If you too are inspired by this couple’s amazing bookshelf project, be sure to check out their Facebook page (Jess & Sinclair For The Block) for more details (pssst… don’t forget to “like” Hip2BeHome while you’re there!).
“It was a huge process. But it was so worth it. All good things take time. You need to make sure you take that time, refrain from rushing and don’t cut corners.”
it is probably quoting the price in Australian dollars, though, so might be less in US.
Yes, it’s actually only about $620 US.
Thanks for mentioning that! We’ll look into it!
Yes, that’s beautiful!
I agree! SO pretty!
I love this! If I had a wall I could do this on, I would.
Same here! I was just thinking the same thing!
Wish I were a handy man! I would have that in a heartbeat

Be careful what you wish for. I am married to a retired engineer who loves to fix stuff. We were at my elderly parents house when something went wrong with their dishwasher. My Mom and I went shopping and returned to start dinner. My husband had 3 feet of parts carefully laid out in her kitchen floor. My Mom said I guess we are going out for dinner. Washers, dryers, hot water heaters, ac units not to mention all the small things around the house are all fair game. I did put my foot down when our washing machine broke down 2 weeks before our daughter’s wedding and we had been rear ended the week before and I still recovering from whiplash. I insisted on new washing machine.
My husband is also an engineer. The worst is when you say you want or like something and it turns into “I can make that for you” type situation. I sometimes would just rather buy the item I want.
So so beautiful & unusual 👍
I know! Unique and beautiful for sure! Thanks for stopping by to check it out, Usha!
Diane, better than my husband, who has Aspergers, loves taking things like our dish washer and washing machine apart but doesn’t have the know how to get them back together..i wish i was joking lol
Super cute! They should use the small boxes for CDs or something. They look odd empty.
Great idea, Erin!
Very creative! I think $900 is reasonable for a custom job like this and I do love a statement piece. Would prefer if it was not quite so overpowering (not floor-to-ceiling); a bit smaller would also make it easier to reach the books:) Although I think it is beautiful, I am not likely to make the $900 investment. I look for art/furniture that can work in multiple ways/settings–objects that can easily change function as my needs change. Also,, every now and then I simply get sick of the status quo! I like to mix things up and am already curious how it would look in a mid-century wood-tone or colored-shelf configuration. Therefore I would install the shelves on a pegboard (in the same tone as the wall so the peg holes don’t stand out), and move them whenever (and wherever) the spirit moves you! The possibilities are limitless and a girl has to keep her options open:)
Oh yes! Love that idea, Laurel! Thanks for the suggestion!
Im tempted to try this with those cubes you buy to use for storage cubicles. They are soft but would hold light items. Or go to 5 below and get a stack of ottomans with lids and have closed storage for kids clothes?
I’d be interested to know if it works! If you do it, Hallie, make sure you let us know!
