Homemade Valentine’s Day Gift Idea
How cute is this?! If you are looking for an affordable and thoughtful Valentine’s Day gift to give to a teacher, neighbor, or friend… look no further! Check out this creative and simple craft idea that reader, Tiffany, emailed in about:
If any of your readers are interested, here is a very cute and inexpensive teachers Valentine gift idea that I made. I’m even giving some to my girlfriends who are single.
Items Needed:
4 inch clay pot $1.29
Glass jar $1.00
3 inch clay pot saucer $0.79
1 inch dowel cap $3.29 plus 40% off with 16
Red craft paint $0.59 (I made 12 with one bottle!)
White craft paint $0.59
Foam hearts $2.99 (150 pieces in a pack)
Clear small size basket gift bags $4.99 plus 40% off with 16
Curling ribbon
Sounds like a lot but some stuff you may already have on hand. You paint the pot and saucer red, glue the glass jar to the bottom of the pot, glue dowel on saucer and assemble. I filled mine with M&M’s, kisses and conversation hearts but you could use any candy. I also painted little white dots for some detail and glued on foam hearts but not necessary if you don’t want to.
As you can see they are adorable and if I divide up the cost it is about $4 per gift. Also, you can make these for any occasion. For example, you could change the base color and fill it with Happy Birthday mints from the Dollar Tree and put a foam cake in the middle or something. Use your imagination. Have fun!!!
(Thanks, Tiffany – I love this idea!)
Those are so cute!
Your kids could give smaller versions of these out in class. Use foam cups for the bottom, colored with marker or covered in tissue paper. A little plastic jar or even baggie filled in a circle. The top could be the foam cup lid also covered in tissue paper. The kid can decorate the bottom cup with stickers or foam shapes and then then add a little pom-pom for the top. Some glue to hold it all together and a little string around the pom-pom to say who it is from, and this would be the favorite in the class!
You can get the foam at the dollar store in the craft section!
Great idea !
If you’re looking to be even more frugal, you can always cut wrapping paper into small strips, leaving about an inch or so at the end (to hold the ribbons together) and then curl the paper (as you would with ribbon) using scissors. Since it’s V-day, you can probably use some leftover Christmas wrapping paper. We had tons of red & white leftovers and I use them like crazy on Vday! lol
I made these this year as teacher gifts for $3 each! They turned out so cute! I posted a tutorial on how to make them on my blog: https://minnesotamamasmusthaves.com/2013/02/diy-valentines-day-gumball-candy-dish-great-teacher-gift.html
They are so cute, Tiffany!
So cute!
LOVE these, sooooo cute!
Great idea. You can also watch for things on clearance after Valentine’s Day (hearts, etc) and use them as table decorations at bridal showers or have them for next year. Finding things on super sale makes this affordable to do for Sunday School classes, scout troops, etc. Thanks for sharing.
My sister made these years ago but they were bigger. She had painted them for the individuals they were for. Mine had butterflies all over it. They are great for candy jars… or if you have pets treat jars. Use really good strong glue between the pot and the glass bowl!
Such a cute idea! I will have to try this!
I was thinking the same thing about after vday sale but the hearts is really the only thing u could save all year. U could get the rest of the supplies all year round…maybe when Michaels puts out a 20% off entire purchase coupon.
So cute!
How creative and cute!
WHere do you find the round glass jars?
There is an aisle at michaels with all glass stuff like that…
Cute, but those decorative glass jars/vases are super thin. I could see me banging the lid against the edge and it shattering everywhere, let alone what my kids would do to it. It would be awesome if there was something similar that’s plastic.
There probably is but honestly my kids were involved with this and the glass top of the jar is thicker than u think. It’s not something that is going to break easy.
Adorable! Thanks for sharing, Tiffany!
Glass baby food jars are a go to item for a lot of holiday crafts like this one!
Too cute!! My mind is going crazy as to making Easter ones? Maybe little felt tabs glued inside of lid if your worried about the glass vs. clay lid?
Easter ones would be adorable. You could use pastel paint colors and fun Easter candies. And put a little egg foamie or bunny on the front. I will make some for my kids to give their Awana leaders for church.
GREAT FOR AWANA!!! Now I’m thinking! Lol
How does the top stay on? Is it glued? And if it is….how do you get the candy out??? 🙂
The top just sits on just like a cookie jar. No glue involved!
ahhhh! great!

This is such a cute Valentine craft idea! Thanks for sharing!
cute! I don’t see glue listed on your supply list – what type do you use?
How sweet to give it to girlfriends who are single! Us single gals can use a little pick me up on that day (especially us Valentine’s babies!)
I made these also for my daughters teacher, I found it on Pinterest
Thanks for all of the ideas ladies. It gave me one – my sister reads EVERY label and is a health nut. I made her a basket with other items ‘from my heart to hers’ that I snagged as a hip to save member. It had things all health related. Thank you for getting my creative juices flowing again.
And if you only need one, Dollar Tree has those little bags of Chocolate for $1.00! (Who wouldn’t want chocolate?!?)
