Tackling a project like a garage can seem overwhelming. The good news is that it’s extremely rewarding to clean and organize, as it’ll make your space so much more functional and efficient.
I’ve personally implemented these easy garage organization ideas in my home, so I’m excited to share them with you! From tools, sports equipment, holiday decor, and more, you’re going to love these simple solutions!
Even better, right now during Prime Day, you can score tons of deals on many of our top picks!
Here are some REAL LIFE garage organization ideas to help you get back on track!
1. Host a yard sale to declutter first.
First and foremost, PURGE! Get rid of unused and unwanted items by donating or hosting a garage sale. The less you have, the easier it is to organize, and the funds could help fund your garage makeover, too. 😄

2. Need garage wall organization ideas? Install hanging overhead racks for bins and large items.
Overhead Garage Storage Rack – $68.79 shipped (reg. $99.99)
*Prime Day deal!
Maximize your garage storage space by utilizing your walls and ceilings to get as many bins off the floor as possible (I placed all my camping and holiday bins on these racks since I don’t need to access the items regularly).
I installed seven of these adjustable overhead garage storage systems, and it’s amazing how much more floor space is now available. Although mine aren’t on sale for Prime Day, I linked a great deal above on a 5-star rated rack. 👆🏼
3. Purchase overhead storage hangers.
Overhead Garage Storage Rack Hooks 6-Pack – $17.59 (reg. $22.99)
*Prime Day deal!
One of our favorite garage organization ideas is to utilize the ceiling. Use these overhead storage hangers (also found at your local home improvement store) to easily hang bikes, cords, scooters, and tools to get them off the ground.
4. For more garage wall organization, invest in shelving.
Adjustable Metal Shelf Wire Shelving – $85.84 shipped (reg. $100.99)
*Prime Day deal!
One of the first steps to organize your garage is to get shelving to store your belongings. Either build your own shelves or buy easy-to-assemble shelving for bins, boxes, and larger items. Try some adjustable shelving units that can be placed vertically or side by side to create a workbench as I did above.
5. Use labels to easily identify bins.
Labels are one of the best garage organization ideas, and we highly recommend you do it. Labeling bins and boxes easily identifies contents and helps kids (and adults) see where items belong. To save money, you can use printer paper and handwrite and tape each one to every bin as I did.
6. Add pegboard(s) for garage tool organization.
Peg Board 4-Pack – $25.64 shipped (reg. $38.99)
*Prime Day deal!
Pegboards and pegboard accessories from Amazon or the hardware store offer great ways to easily organize hand tools and smaller garage items.
7. Another tip for garage tool organization is to get your tools off the ground.
Home-it Mop and Broom Holder Wall Mount – $12.74 (reg. $14.99)
Get brooms, mops, and lawn tools off the ground with a hanging organizing system like this one.
8. One of our other garage organization ideas is to hang ladders.
SMARTOLOGY Garage Hooks – $20.84 shipped (reg. $24.99)
*Prime Day deal!
Hang ladders and larger tools with convenient heavy-duty wall-mounted hangers. I like this inexpensive and durable hook on Amazon. My hip sidekick Sara also recommends these slim, grippy garage hooks, which you can use for strollers, wagons, bicycles, hoses, and so much more!
9. Use the space above the garage doors.
My husband built a simple overhead organizer to hold extra scrap wood and wood flooring. It’s great to have these materials up and out of the way. Even better, it can be a space for mini odds and ends, depending on your needs.
Online (local) estate sales are a great place to find garage shelving in our area. Just remember, you have to find a way to get it home. The estate sales I frequent don’t offer to disassemble.
Thanks a bunch for mentioning where you’ve been able to grab great deals on garage shelving, Meagb. Good to know about the estate sales tip! ❤️
How hard was it to install overhead racks in your garage? (I am not very handy.) Thanks!
Hi Diane! It requires a ladder, drill, and to be able to find the studs to drill into. My husband installed it and says easy but unsure I could do it alone. He’s the handy one honestly lol Maybe a friend or handyman could help?!
My husband’s scrap wood is my biggest difficulty with having a clean and organized garage! The over the garage door shelf is a great idea. I’m going to show it to my husband and hopefully he can not only use some of his scrap wood up but get it better organized! 🤪
