10 Diaper Cake Tutorials (Fun Baby Shower Gift)
If you have a baby shower to attend, consider making a festive diaper cake for the mom to be! Diaper Cakes are a creative way to gift things the baby will need and to present them in a fun way. And when you score a great deal on diapers (think coupons and sales!), then you should be able to make a very affordable diaper cake.
I recently made my first diaper cake for my sister in law’s golf-themed baby shower (my brother is a golf course superintendent and they both love golfing together!). My kids and I had fun putting this together for their soon to be cousin and it was actually pretty easy to do! I saved money by buying the toy clubs and diaper bag clip at Dollar Tree, and the socks and burp cloth from TJ Maxx.
To make this diaper golf bag, start by rolling 48 size 1 diapers and securing them each with a rubber band. Secure 3 of those rolled diapers together with another rubber band. Then line up 9 rolled diapers around the three you just did and secure with one or two rubber bands. Repeat three more times and you’ll end up with four tiers of diapers for the bag.
Carefully insert toy golf clubs between the middle diapers and they will support the four tiers of diapers. Embellish bag with coordinating ribbon, baby socks, and use a diaper bag clip to clip on a burp cloth. I used the cardboard bottom portion of a pant hanger from the dry cleaners cut in half for the stand.
Note: My bag was inspired by this one from MonkeySmiles. Thanks for the inspiration!

Keep in mind that diaper cake diapers can’t be returned, so I would not suggest the preemie size, or maybe not even a 1. My sister inherited an entire diaper cake from a friend, because the friend’s baby never fit into that size. It had been taken apart and thrown in a plastic bag. I bet many would have just thrown them away.
you can return them to another friend who could use it! 🙂
But that’s not the point of the gift. Th point id the gift of for the person you give it to. 🙁
Isn’t the point that you should just be grateful for someone thinking of you and giving you a gift? Idk..to me its the thought that counts.
While that is true meg, who wants to give a gift if someone isn’t going to use it. I know I would be disappointed if I spent all of that time and money on a gift someone couldn’t use.
Love making these thanks!
so adorable lina! I love the baby at the top of the cake. what are the snack golf balls made of with the andes mints?
I believe those are cake balls wrapped in fondant with a candy mold. I cannot take credit for them. My SIL has a talented cake maker Aunt! 🙂 Thanks!!!
I was thinking that too! What are those lol? Thanks for answering Lina!
I recommend #6 cake pan method. Easy and no rolling
This is my all time favorite tutorial for making a diaper cake. https://megan.cc/NappyCake/
Have made several of the tricycle diaper cakes on youtube for boys and girls. So cute and very versatile!
My daughter just made the cutest tricycle ever with this same idea. It’s absolutely adorable! Oh and so is this idea 🙂 wish I could post a pic. I did forward this idea to her in case she wanted to have a golf theme for the shower she is giving. Thanks guys!
Hilarious! I was just researching these yesterday for a shower in January. I’m trying the bathtub one from the same site. It looks easy enough. I made the tricycle one a couple of years ago and it took some skill!
I also make diaper cake motorcycles, four wheelers, baby carriages, and onsesie cupcakes as well! I have make them for several years, since my sorority sisters and honors society gals started their own families, and though they are a bit time consuming, they are a blast to make!
I would never want to receive a diaper cake as a gift. I wouldn’t know where to store it, as I would feel bad about taking it apart or throwing it out. Also, how would the person know what brand of diapers to buy? Most mommies are brand loyal. But……I do think they are super creative, and I love the golf theme shower. Very original!
Agreed. I also have a thing with dust and dirt and I wouldn’t use diapers that someone took out of a package and used for a craft. I would appreciate the thought though and pass the diapers on to someone who wasn’t quite as picky as I was! 🙂
Lots of people are switching to cloth diapers now wouldn’t have any use for disposables so just pay attention to the registry to make sure that they actually need disposables. I received some disposables at my shower and didn’t use them since I cloth diaper, I would have preferred something I could have used.
Just made a princess castle diaper cake and the guests thought it was a real cake it turned out so well! Just made an owl and also a washcloth bouquet! So much fun!
Diaper castle also included a secret bottle of champagne as the center to take up space and as an “extra” to surprise them!
Cute idea!
Love that!
A few tips from making these myself…use those clear hair rubberbands, dollar tree usually has 100-500 packs. I fold up the package of diapers and place underneath so they know the brand and size. I wrap mine in “gift basket” clear plastic wrap-bag.
Great tip!
Cute ideas but I’m still giving out box of diapers. I know some people don’t like their newborn’s diapers handled too much by others.
I am one of this people, so thank you!
Then, I suggest only giving this to someone who would appreciate it. It used to be (when it comes to giving gifts) it’s the thought that counts. When you love someone so much to take the time and money to make them and their new baby an awesome gift like this, no one should be complaining about who touched it, what it’s made of, or anything else. The last 2 I made were for 2 teenage mothers who had NO ONE in their life teaching them how to be a mom or helping them get what they needed. They truly appreciated everything they received, which also included an attached card with a list of all items used and the size of diapers. Although they thought it was too nice to take apart, they were in desperate need of everything used. For those concerned about who is touching the diapers, just wait till they see what the baby is gonna put inside it! lol
Absolutely agree!!!!!! Geeze…it is the thought that counts!!! Be grateful people!
Just found this thread and could not believe the responses, especially those about touching the baby diapers! Let’s see if I got this right, you are concerned that someone would love you enough to create, from the heart I might add, a beautiful memory at your shower or on the day of delivery? Well, I guess it’s alright then that tons of strange people touched those very same diapers at the assembly and packaging plant! Goodness, how ungrateful can you be?!?
