DIY Beer Coasters (Father’s Day Gift Idea)
Is the man in your life a fan of beer? If so, check out this unique DIY gift idea (perfect for Father’s Day) that uses cardboard beer carriers! These custom coasters turn out so cute and are super easy to make! If you prefer, you can opt to use soda boxes instead or even personal photos!
DIY Beer Coasters
These beer coasters are a perfect gift and will definitely fit your budget. What’s even better is they will be personalized for that special person. You can make a party of it by inviting your friends over and have an adult arts and crafts day — that is, if you are making the coasters out of beer carriers.
However, if you choose to make them out of soda pop carriers or photographs, then this will become a great activity for the kids. Spend some time together on a Saturday morning or one afternoon after school to make that special gift for dad.
And, remember, these beer coasters are easy and fun to make.
Supplies Needed:
- Cardboard boxes and carriers used for beer packaging
- 4×4 inch Tiles
- Mod Podge, plus foam brush or paint brush
- Adhesive felt pads (the kind you use under furniture to protect floors) or corkboard
- Clear Polycrylic protective finish (optional but recommended)
- Medium grit sandpaper or sanding block
Directions:
- Use a pen and trace the coaster on the cardboard so it’s the same size as the tile – then cut the square out of the cardboard.
- Brush a coat of Mod Podge onto the back of cardboard and place on top of tile smoothing out any bubbles.
- Turn it over so the weight of the tile is on top and let dry. If the edges pop up, be sure to press them down.
- Let dry for about 15 minutes and apply 2-4 more layers of Mod Podge on top of the tiles, letting each layer dry in between coats.
- After everything is completely dry, go back and sand down any rough edges.
- Place the self adhesive felt pads on the bottom of tiles.
- Finish by painting a coat of polycrylic protective finish in clear over the top. This will protect your coaster and keep it lasting longer.
This is such a fun craft and great way to upcycle cardboard beer carriers! On a side note, my husband was pretty impressed and excited to use his coasters! 🙂 So, why not make him a set for Father’s Day?
You can use photos too!
Yep! Great idea
Do the real pictures look as good as cardboard. Debating on which to use. I have done a modge podge activity on a recipe box and I thought it turned out fine
I love it!! I’m sooo doing this as father’s day gifts. Add a beer mug and you’re done! Thanks!!
Awesome!!sure- and thanks for stopping by!
My toddler daughter did a variation of this last year for father’s day. Instead of beer cartons/ tops we cut squares of different colored tissue paper and used the mod podge to adhere and seal it. We got tiles for 20 cents each or less at Lowe’s. I glued felt to the underside of the tiles to avoid scratching. They came out beautiful!
So fun! Thanks for sharing 😀
I used felt on the bottom too. Used smooth ceramic tiles from lowes for 20 cents
Great idea! Might try to do this!
Cute idea
Thanks Seren!

Sure! Thanks for stopping by 😀
I love this idea! I’m already making them I’m at the point where you put mod podge on the front of the tiles. I have one question, why do you out mod podge on the front of tiles? Please respond
So you put it on the front so it will stay on and so it will be reusable and be protected from getting reunited by liquid. Hope that helps

I finished two coasters. I used a sponge brush for the glue and used 3 coats on top. When I used the polycrylic spray, you could see the brush marks. I see here where it said to sand any rough edges but I didn’t know if I should use it on top of the cardboard. Is that the way to do it to get rid of the brush marks? After seeing they turned out horrible, I used a foam roller to roll on the glue. What now?
Thank you, in advance, for your help.
Great Gifts for house warming.

Hi, little confused are you using the labels from the bottle or the print on the 6 pack holder?
6 pack holders – I cut those up to size. Hope that helps
Would wood squares instead of stone tiles work also?
Yes! Great idea 😀
I always find those boxes where I redeem my cans/bottles. You can get them from there if you can’t find any at home!
Great tip – thanks!
that is such a great idea for any personal gift or any one hard to buy for .. thank you
Made these for my adult sons a few years ago. They loved them. Their friends think the coasters are cool too.
Thanks for the feedback!
I use laminated floor samples we got when we redid our floor. They have rubber on the bottom and are lighter thuan tile.
You can purchase coasters from dollar tree which already have the cork on bottom and just zip through the project.
Oh love that idea! Will have to look for them. Thanks Susan!
your very welcome!
