Dollar Store Thanksgiving Hat Centerpiece
Looking for a creative AND inexpensive Thanksgiving table centerpiece?
Easily turn an ordinary flower pot into a cute pilgrim hat by gluing it upside down on top of a large round tray! Paint the whole thing black and add some festive embellishments like Fall leaves and mini pumpkins. The result is a CUTE decoration to display on your table at Thanksgiving!
Consider grabbing a plastic flower pot and round tray at your local dollar store!
Flower Pot Pilgrim Hat Thanksgiving Centerpiece
Supplies Needed:
- 1 medium-sized flower pot (plastic or pottery)
- 1 large circular tray
- Epoxy glue (such as E6000)
- black paint (spray paint or craft paint)
- White craft paint
- foam paint brush
- Fall embellishments such as faux flowers, leaves, etc.
Directions: Glue the flower pot upside down in the middle of tray and let dry. Paint pot and tray with several coats of black paint and let dry. Paint a strip of white towards the bottom of flower pot. Glue on any Fall related embellishments near “rim” of hat.
These super cute felt flowers and wood leaves can be found in Target’s The One Spot, near the front of store. You can also alternatively use the faux leaves found at any dollar store or craft store.
I also wanted to note if you added some Christmas greenery and berries, this same idea can be applied to make a festive snow man hat Christmas centerpiece! So easy and fun. 😊
Very cute! I’ll have to try this! Thanks for the idea.
Sure – thanks for visiting Christie!

Such a fun idea! Love it 👍🏻
This is a great idea! And it’s probably the only thing you can do with that flower pot. I bought a bunch of them and they are very thin. I hurt myself drilling out the drain holes on the bottom. They crack horribly too.
Thanks joy for the info! Yes no drilling involved 😀👍
I love it! Great for the kids table!
Thanks Tiffany!
hello!
what kind of paint did you use on the flower pot?
i have tried three coats of tempera paint and it comes off like bad sunburned skin!
please share what kind of paint
It’s acrylic – two coats
Thanks for the information on the paint.
Could this be done with tiny pots and styrofoam plates? Thinking about PreK kids…would acrylic paint stick to the plates?
Cute ya I’ve painted styrofoam plates 👍🏻 love this idea!
I think I’m going to make this and put a bowl of dip on top and chips around the rim for the appetizer table.
Hi,
I work with FirstForWomen.com, the website for the best-selling women’s magazine.
We would love to feature this in an article about DIY Thanksgiving decor. Would you be willing to let us use your image(s)? For the text of the article, we would write up a brief summary that credits Hip2Save and then link over to the site for the full instructions.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and thanks!
Oh thanks we’d love that if linked to this post! Thanks so much for considering us 👍🏻
I have made one of your Pilgrim hats and now wish to make a few more. I went to Dollar Tree for my 1st one, but now they will not have them till spring. Have tried their online site, not their either. Do you know of another supplier for these pots. Thank you
Darn, I don’t but I’d keep checking in store as their inventory changes frequently. Sorry I’m not much help.
I used the white plastic glasses in a set of three at the Dollar store , taped the bottom ring and sprayed the top part the glass using paint that is designed for plastics. I bought four buckles at Hobby Lobby half price for $1.35 to glue on them. The flower pots are out of season but the glasses are just the right size for my Thanksgiving table. hope that helps.
Can you tell me what size the glasses were. I live in Alaska and we do not have a dollar store. I have been on the hunt for flower pot and of course can not find them, with it being winter.
Good luck finding spray paint – apparently what should be in our stores must be on a container.
