Re-Purpose a Bread Box to Hide the Counter Clutter
Need a dedicated area to store kitchen counter clutter such as keys, phone chargers, wallets, loose change, pencils, etc.?
When I found this cute vintage breadbox with a roll top front at a local thrift store for just a few dollars, I knew immediately how to re-purpose it!
I first painted the sides and top, then drilled a small hole in the back for a cell phone charger cord. I also screwed in some hooks on the sides to hold keys.
Now it can hold and organize all the little “stuff” we tend to just throw on the counter – including the phone charger!
We’ve used this for almost two years now and it has been working great! I thought I’d share this easy project in case you ever come across a bread box like this one (or something similar) at a garage sale or thrift store!
Interesting. Any ideas for overflowing mails and magazines? 🌺
I have that magazine issue!
I have that magazine issue too but for mail, I have a metal wall rack from Hobby Lobby that has 3 slots. I use the top for “shred”, the middle for “file”, and the bottom for “to do”. It works pretty well for us and keeps the mail off of the kitchen counter!
So cute!!! Great idea! Now, need to find a vintage bread box….
Lina!! That is so cute, country and clever. I love it!
Thanks Jill!
This is adorable! I’m going to try to find one and paint it without the “bread” word, for my nightstand! Such a great idea!!
That would be so great!
That is a great idea!
So, then where would you put the bread?!
Lol 😀
Next to my desk in a filing cabinet. 😝
Great idea but I actually use my bread box
Omg I love this. Need to go find a bread box!!
Yes! 👍
Genius!
I put all my papers in one and when too full take them to file boxes. Good idea for other stuff, guess I need another box lol
Adorable!!
I want to refurbish a bread box (or something similar) to use in the bathroom to store our electric toothbrushes and chargers. I’ve heard that germs fly everywhere when you flush the toilet so I don’t like to keep the toothbrushes/charger out on the counter.
Oh good idea! I would love something like that also 👍
They fly out at 100 mph. No joke. Closing the lid before flashing will avoid spreading germs.
We always close the lid before flushing…does everyone not do this?!
Right?!? Sadly, I know people who don’t!
So cute! Thanks for posting! I love mixing vintage and modern pieces together. It would look cute in my house.
I do too Ashley! So fun ❤️
So cute! Love this idea!!
Ha! I have been doing this for years.I have a plain unfinished bread box and my bread would always mold in there. So I started using it about 10-12 years ago to hide counter clutter. I thought I was the only weirdo who did this. LOL.
😀 By weirdo you mean genius?! Lol
Ohh my goodness, my mom had this same breadbox when I was growing up. She saves everything, i’m going to have to call her tomorrow and see if she still has it. She actually stored bills and stuff in it, but I forgot all about it, until I saw this post 🙂
How nice! I’ll cross my fingers for ya 😀
Cute! bet you could hang it in the pantry or even the bathroom if you panted the entire thing!
Great idea!
Such a cute idea, as usual Lina! Where did you get the cute organizer inside the bread box? Thanks!
It was from the thrift store too! It’s just a wood phone charging station I believe. Maybe could find similar at a big box store? I painted it also to match 😀 Thanks for the nice compliment Ellen!
Anyone have a link for one similar? This is so worth buying a new one and repurposing it.
Love this idea!
Thanks Diana!
I have a red one from Target that i use as medicine cabinet and keep on top on my refrigerator.
Great post! More like this please!!!
Oh thanks! 👍
We actually use our old bread box to store our cook books and I have a recipe box in there as well. This way they are all where we need them but they don’t get any kitchen dirt on them and they are out of the way. I really like this idea too. Maybe I’ll look for another and move my cookbook box to the top of the fridge.
Fun idea! Thanks Sharon 👍
I’ve been using mine for years to store my dog’s treats/food bowls/medicine/etc. I love this idea too, so I might have to be on the hunt for a 2nd bread box!
Great idea! ✅
I love the old bread boxes! They remind me of my grandma, who almost never kept bread in it, but cookies lol. That was always the first stop when you walked in at Grandmas house, after the candy dish on the tv.
Cute memory! Thanks for sharing Sara! 😀
