I agree with you 100%! Most trainers and behaviorists agree too!
agreed.
Why?
Because dogs shouldn’t lead you.
Totally agree. They are dangerous for many reasons.
For walking, I agree that they shouldn’t be used. For letting the dog out to do it’s business when you don’t have a fenced in area and don’t have a tie out, they are great.
These comments are so interesting to me! Can anyone explain more about why these are bad? We just added a dog to our family. We doesn’t pull when we walk him, instead he stays close(too close!) to my feet! But since there is always slack in the leash, it’s constantly getting tangled in his feet. I was going to get one of these thinking it would help, but now I’m not so sure? ? Any additional insight would be appreciated!
+1. I understand how some owners want their dogs to know how to heel and stay at their side. But when you’re letting your dog explore, this seems like it would be a fine product?
Owners have zero control of their dog when they use these things. When people are trying to regain control of a closer distance in a quick manner, they will grab the line. The line will cause a terrible friction burn against any part of your body. Usually it’s their hands from grabbing it. I’ve also seen dogs get tangled in them causing major damage to their limbs as they are getting excited because they see something they want.
I seriously hate these things. I hate walking past people using them and then their crazy little dog decides to walk in front of us and we all get tangled. I’ve seen the cord snap apart and the dog got lose, resulting in a dog fight.
You should walk with your dog next to you on your left.
I do animal rescue and I’ve seen this leash do more damage than good.
Exactly right Jill. For anyone wondering, I’m sure if you google flexi lead burns you will see exactly what she is talking about. I have been tangled up in these things way too many times when other people can’t control their dogs and have the leash extended to some obscene length. While walking your dog there is really no reason that your dog should be more than 6 feet away from you, for the safety of you, your dog, and everyone else around.
Dog trainers explicitly state that these leashes should not be used, because as many people mentioned, they make it impossible to control your dog, and are dangerous for both dogs and people because of it. Buy a regular old leash. If you need a longer one for situations where you need to let your dog go outside, get regular leash extender. If your leash seems to be too long when walking your dog, wrap it around your hand a couple of times. Stay away from retractable leashes.
Goodness….people really do find all sorts of things to complain about
If I could have a do-over with my dog (passed away), I would definitely use a harness while walking her instead of attaching the leash directly to her collar. It’s much more humane. Sometimes you hear about dogs’ esophagus’ collapsing because of pulling on the collar so much.
And of course choking problems.
I have all kinds of different types. I prefer & love my retractable leash. We walk all over town with it, on trails, around the neighborhood. I have never once had any kind of trouble. I just keep it locked on the length I prefer.
However, my Dad has a standard leash for his dog. Last week he had the leash wrapped around his hand, & the next second some how it was wrapped around his finger, & injured it pretty badly.
It doesn’t matter what kind of leash you use,it could potentially cause injures. I encourage you to try a retractable leash for yourself.
