ALL ToysRUs & BabiesRUs Retail Stores Are Closing (Liquidation Sales Start March 22nd)
We’ve got sad news to share… 😥
ToysRUs announced that they are closing all stores in the U.S., including BabiesRUs locations – the CEO, David Brandon, notified employees earlier today. No one knows how long the shut down will take, but sadly over 30,000 people will lose their jobs. You can read more about it here.
Can I use my Gift Cards?
If you have unused gift cards lying around, you will need to use them soon. It was announced on 3/15 that gift cards will only be honored for 30 days. An exact date was not given, but that is around April 13th.
When Does ToysRUs Liquidation Start?
ToysRUs liquidation will start on March 22nd and run through May 14th, at which point liquidators will come in and sell everything that remains. Be sure to keep a lookout for great deals on items that are rarely discounted, like apple products, select baby gear, name-brand toys and more!
This makes me so sad
The employees at my TRU were always really nice and helpful! While I never liked their full prices, my husband reminded me we found a lot of Batman toys that none of the other stores carried. Clearance was great. Weâll miss the LEGO and PokĂŠmon events as well as the birthday cards đ
I was at my local Toysrus yesterday. It’s one of the locations that is supposed to be closing in April. The clearance isn’t that good-some things are actually still full price! I couldn’t believe it, I bought nothing.
Wow. So many people are losing their jobs and you’re here complaining about how the discounts don’t appeal to you? How calloused.
How sad
This makes me so sad. It’s so exciting being a kid and going to toys r us. So many kids won’t get to experience that. I mean really, there are no toy stores left now. It’s sad to me.
Don’t feel bad for the kids, they don’t care, after all they sell toys in just about every store I go to. Even grocery stores. My daughter who’s 7 has only been to a toys r us once in her life.
It definitely is a far cry from when I was growing up and we had KB Toys and so many other options. And my kids will miss it as it was always a fun outing to go to our TRU/BRU to pick up our birthday goodies courtesy of Geoffrey.
KB Toys was THE place!! That store was so awesome! I got to go to ToysRUs for special occasions, birthday and Christmas. Especially when the toy catalog came out and looking through it and circling everything I wanted lol.
I agree. Grocery stores, Walmart and even Target donât compare to the joys of going to a store that is solely dedicated to toys. It really is sad. Iâm glad my kids got to experience it.
Really sad for the workers. I hope they’re all able to find jobs soon.
The company that makes Bratz dolls just put in a bid to buy half of the US stores and all Canada stores. I hope this pans out!

Thanks! Fingers crossed it works out. My son will be sad to see them close.
So sad I worked for toys r us when I was 18 and a year after my daughter was born I had tons of fun so sad to see it go
My husband was just at ours yesterday. The girl at the register told him that her manger had told them that morning that they wouldn’t be closing. That breaks my heart. Such a great store!! I think 90% if my birthdays and Christmas gifts as a kid came from there.
Makes me sad! My kids both loved going to TRU! Seeing their faces light up and be covered with an ear to ear grin was such a blessing! It really puts it into perspective when someone else said there are now No Toy stores… đ
When I read the article it says all their stores in UK…… correct me if i’m wrong.
Washington Post and Wall Street announced it will be all 800 US stores.
As a kid I loved going to Toys R Us, so sad that it’s closing. There is no other store with their selection
When I was a kid (20+ years ago), Toys R Us was MAGICAL. Looking through the TRU catalog and circling stuff I wanted to ask Santa for are fond memories.
That said, the few times I have shopped there in the last several years for gifts, I wasn’t super impressed. My location (OH) was always dingy, EXPENSIVE, and not very organized. Sorry to hear about the folks losing their jobs, though. The retail industry is really getting hit hard.
They have a good selection but are way overpriced.
It really makes me sad.My kids started crying when they heard about it.
Sad… too many brick and mortar stores are closing..
Because consumers are shopping mostly online…not really that sad. Except for the jobs lost.
Often because they offer better deals and coupons online half the time đ
Times have changed but I wish a lot of these companies found a proactive way to change to stay current and relevant somehow. Makes me sad to see so much of my childhood in retail be disappearing for good.
Couldn’t agree more! The companies need to catch up with the changing trends. So sad to see these stores close
Toys R Us was one of my first real jobs growing up. Sad to see it go after all this time. (Time to start birthday shopping with all my gift cards and rewards points.)
This is sad but I have to admit our store was always run down, messy, and a nightmare to shop at from a customer service standpoint. I remember thinking at Christmas time if they just invested in lightbulbs and a broom I might shop there more.
Sad for employees. Store is significantly overpriced! We live in a online world, you have to compete or you will close your doors.
It’s so weird to me that while this has all been going on, I’ve still been getting emails about their planned in-store events. Definitely sad, but they haven’t done enough to keep up with the changes in the way people shop. Their prices were always high too, that probably initiated a lot of customer loss.
CRYING!!!!!! So sad. We love ToysRUs. Especially sad for the workers. Our store has such nice workers too.
This is sad. Do you think they will stop accepting gift cards? We have over $100 to use.
In the UK they stopped accepting gift cards this week. I used mine this weekend. I suggest using yours asap.
Someone commented on Instagram that they had a baby shower last week and got over $1000 in gift cards. Yikes!
My childhood đ˘
When I was little in the 80âs I lived going to toys r us and childrenâs palace… I was upset when childrenâs palace closed… my kids love going to TRU… it is kinda said but it doesnât make sense to stay open if you arenât making a profit…
Will online still be available?
Good question! You may want to head over to their Facebook Page and ask Or call in to customer service – 1-800-869-7787 Hope that helps!
My toddler thinks that every toy store is toys r us …it’s like imprinted in his mind ..that’s sad đ
It makes me mad. From what I understand it was bought by people who didnât pay for it, just took on huge debt to buy it. It seems almost criminal that they can do that to all those employees because of greed.
Kids like any large group of toys they see anytime, anyplace. The only thing that makes them unhappy is if they have to leave empty handed. Cue the screaming and crying.
Lol! IE: Walmart, Target, The Dollar Tree, Walgreens, CVS, Dollar General, Family Dollar toy sections! All check out lines, Thrift Stores, even the front of Hobby Lobby where they have all the stuffed animals and random little toys and TSC plastic animal figures and stuffed dog toys. It’s all Toys R Us to them!…I’m not gonna lie TSC has delicious check-out line candy selections though.
I don’t think our kid’s lives will be any less full without it but I am very sorry for Toys-R-Us employees. That is really very sad for them. I hope that online retailers and Amazon’s continuing expansion will help with job losses.
Are they still doing online stuff??
Hi there! To grab more details you may want to head over to their Facebook page and ask Or call in to customer service. 1-800-869-7787 Hoping that might help!
I am sooo sad! Toys r us has been such a big part of shopping for so many years. Plus they always had toys that I couldnât find elsewhere. I hope another company steps in and fill the void somewhat because to me Walmart, Target, etc does not compare. They have no where near the variety of stuff.
Does anyone know when they will officially start marking stuff down?
Hi April! Be sure to call in to your store to see when they might begin markdowns.
Sadđ
So sad….I loved TRU and my lo wont get to grow up experiencing walking down aisles and aisles of toys in one big place!
This makes me so sad! I donât like to do too much online shopping unless itâs a better deal online but I prefer to shop in stores. I love walking in toys r us and picking out toys for my kids and family members. I know there are other places with toys but they had such a great selection of toys!
So sad – both of my kids enjoyed going đ˘
This makes me sad. My kids love going and looking at all the toys. They carry a lot of things that Target and Walmart don’t.
Noooo!! Say it isn’t so!!?? :'(
This makes me very sad…Yes they are over priced but I always price match when shopping at their stores and at times find toys that other stores don’t even carry. This is sad sad news.
First they shut down the Walmart near me, now Toys R Us. Pretty soon I will not have any place I can just drop into to buy things.
Most things will be online soon. If we really think about it, all of us are unknowingly conditioned to shop online. Then companies started closing its doors, focus on online shopping sites and jobs were cut. This also makes me think of local small businesses. If major retailers have a hard time keeping their doors opened, how hard it will be to run a small business with a store front. People do not shop online as it is not only convenient but finding deals and comparing prices are easy. As much as I appreciate online shopping and free shipping, I am sad because more stores are closing and those stores might have been the one I and my family used to go together. Who knows Macys, Belk, Dillards, Nordstrom or even Neiman Marcus might decide to just close their store and focus mainly on their shopping sites.
Just spent the last of our TRU gift cards. Bought an overpriced video game, but at least we were able to redeem the gift card before it lost its value.
But what about credit cards???
I received a postcard a few days ago from synchrony saying they would still be taking care of my R us MasterCard. That was before it was even released that any stores were closing. So I guess that was the first clue that all stores would be closing.
Hi Megs! You may find an answer to that by asking on their Facebook Page Or by calling in to their customer service number – 1-800-869-7787
Glad I used my gift card this morning!
This is really sad, there are so many retail stores closing down. Soon there will be nothing left in our local mall. I am guessing Sears will be next I am surprised they have lasted this long. I stopped shopping with Amazon back in 2010 and I havent missed it at all. I find much better deals elsewhere.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing, that Sears and Kmart would be next. Any store in a mall will struggle, since malls are also a thing of the past. As many others pointed out, we have to be willing to change with the times and trends.
I try to remember as I online shop that if I can get it locally, I should. I don’t necessarily owe someone across the country a job, but I should try and do right by the folks that live in my community and depend on it.
Super sad. I was hoping someone would save them last minute, but I guess that was wishful thinking đ
devastating. there is no greater joy for a child than saving up enough and going to the toy store, you can’t get that same excitement from online shopping
I’ve only been there a few times as an adult, and picked up some nice stuffed animals on sale that I still have (yes for myself!) We grew up in a small village and never went to a toy store as a child. Always had some toys mostly from the grandparents though. I favor educational toys for the kids now. Always hate to see people lose their jobs though.
MY kids will miss the experience. Which I think is exactly the TRU problem- my kids like to window shop there. My 5 y/o literally says âtake a picture so I can remember I want it when I save up my moneyâ and then where does she buy it? Online. Target. Somewhere we go weekly, not every few months as a special treat or to kill time when we are in the area.
Weâve tried the âbuy online/pick up in storeâ
from TRU and itâs a pain in my store- you have to go all the way in, to the back, and still wait for the package. At Target, I can park up front, run into customer service and leave the kids in the car because I can still see them from the front of the store.
Weâll definitely miss the Christmas catalog- and I do think toy brands will feel fallout. While we didnât buy at TRU often, we almost ALWAYS saw new toys or novelties there we hadnât known existed. Then bought elsewhere. So that brand will lose âshelf spaceâ and âeyeball real estateâ or whatever the retail term is, because the bigger stores wonât stock it and the online search algorithms will never show it.
I wonder what this means for my baby registry rewards and baby registry coupon. My coupon days it is good through June so hopefully they will still let me use it, but I’m guessing I probably won’t be getting the endless earnings that is supposed to come 10 weeks after the due date.
You could always call in to customer service 1-800-869-7787 Or head over to their Facebook Page and ask there to be certain how they might honor that.
It’s really sad for the workers but most customers seemed to have the same experience at the stores. Poor design, adequate customer service and a dingy, unkempt store. It was always strange to me that in the last year or so I would take my three kids all under 8 to pick out a toy. They always seemed less than impressed and bored at the store (completely the opposite of my childhood experience). Many times I would even have to prompt them or help them pick something out. So we went less and less. But when I would take them to $5 below to pick out a toy they were thrilled and excited. So the choice became clear to me.
