My 2 sons, both recent college grads, have never written a check. It’s all plastic and Apple Pay for Millenials.
I asked my kiddo, who’s heading off to college in September, whether he thought he needed checks. Nope. He’s planning to do everything with his debit card and/or electronic payments. Seems so strange to not even *have* checks!
I work at a farm stand and we only except cash or checks. A 20 something came in and sincerely had no idea what a check was. Her guy friend said “you know the paper thing you write out instead of money…” she was completely confused to what was happening, even when he pulled out his check book. To make it even funnier he wrote it out wrong and had to start over. It was his second time writing one, the first time apparently was to get his passport (the only reason he had the checks). We all had a good laugh when they left.
I’m 30 so I’m somewhere in between having only written a few checks in my life and using mostly debit and credit cards, but here’s a thought for those whose kids don’t need or want them for college: what happens if you have your wallet stolen or you lose it? This happened to me once and I was in college and lived way from home which was nowhere near my local bank, so I couldn’t just go in and get a new debit card; I had to have one mailed to me and it took a few days. It’s handy to have a checkbook so you can still write a check to get groceries if your cards are lost or stolen. And even if you have Apple Pay, if you have to cancel cards because you won’t be able to use that either until new cards arrive. And every now and then you’ll run into a place that doesn’t take debit or credit cards, like the passport situation another commenter mentioned
I’m in college now and it seems like NO ONE (but me apparently) has checks. I have had multiple friends ask me to write a check on their behalf because they needed one. I’ve considered charging a $5 fee for my services at times 😂
The deal appears to be dead. I just tried to use the code and got the message that the “code is invalid or is no longer active.” I tried several scenarios, from 1 box of single checks to 4 boxes of duplicates, and all combinations came up with the same error message.
It is still working for me. Are you able to try again in another browser?
