It has a lot of rules to learn at first, but it’s really fun. I was introduced to it over Christmas break, and we played 15+ hours of it over a few days.
Also, this needs 3 or 4 players. To play with 5 or 6, you need to buy the ~$20 expansion pack.
Yes but it helps to have someone who has already played it to teach you. That being said, it was a lot of fun and I would recommend it if you like those kind of games.
We played it for the first time last night and it was a lot of fun! I am looking to purchase one now too we liked it that much!
My favorite game! It does take about 90 minutes though. Thatās the only reason we donāt play it more.

Definitely worth it. Kids got them for the holidays and it’s been continuous fun. The 8 year old is enjoying with the older siblings.
That’s one of my favorite parts of the game too MM! It’s definitely a family game with a wide range of ages able to play and enjoy!
We are board game fanatics at our house! (2 adults + 3 kids – ages 9, 7, and 4) We used to have a weekly game night (complete with board-game-themed snacks), but this game was so much fun that we play it multiple times a week. It’s easy enough for our 7 year old and the 9 year old LOVES it. Plus, it’s engaging enough for the two adults in the house. It does take 90 minutes. We love it so much that we slowly are building up the expansion packs that go with it. (Knight and Barbarians is our favorite expansion.)
Maybe because we’re nerd parents, but we also used Catan to help teach some math concepts (never too early for a little probability and statistics lesson, right?…see…nerds parents) It’s also been a good game with dynamics to teach other “life” lessons/social skills. For example, the knight/robber part – is it always advantageous to rob other players or will that just shut down your trading partners for the rest of the game?

Catan is one of our favorites and we also like Forbidden Desert, Qwirkle and Sushi Go Party. For Christmas Santa got the kids Ticket to Ride, Villainous, and Pandemic. I’ll have to look at our game closet (because I’m short on coffee this morning and my brain is a little foggy), but some of our favorites are: Catan, Cities and Knights – a Catan expansion pack, Forbidden Island (just like Forbidden Desert), Qwirkle, Ticket to Ride, Pandemic, Risk, plus others!
Ticket to Ride is great, but there’s so many pieces!
Pandemic is one that we like to play because it’s a co-op game and the whole family has to work together to win. We play this game sometimes after too many intense games of Catan just so everyone can be on the same side again. lol.
When we’re feeling lazy and don’t want to deal with board game setup, we play monopoly on our PS4. It’s faster paced than normal monopoly and no one has to be the banker!
Have you ever watched Wil Wheaton’s “Tabletop” on Youtube? Since board games are an investment (unless Hip2Save points out a great deal), me and my husband preview games we are thinking about purchasing on this youtube channel. Also, it helps us understand the complex rules a little faster for some games.
We got Munchkin for Christmas. We love it so much that we bough two more expansion packs right away!

Our kids 12 and 14 love playing board games and this is a favorite along with ticket to ride.
Question: I teach fifth grade. Is this something I could let a small group play together at the end of the year? Would they be able to self manage?
Probably too complicated for a group of only 5th graders. Lots of little pieces. Many 5th graders could easily play this, but keeping the game on track would be difficult. Also, rules aren’t super intuitive. It helps to play it with someone who has played before to learn how to play. Game play is over an hour also.
There is a junior version of Catan… I’ve never played it but I assume it is probably shorter and less complicated than the full version.
I’ve only played the jr. version. It is actually kind of fun…doesn’t take nearly as long as the reg. version.
I just wanted to say thank you for posting this deal, and thanks to all who commented that they love the game. I took a chance and bought it for my 11 year old son, and he LOVES it. We played last night for the first time, and it took a while, but I’m sure it will get quicker when we’re not learning as we go. Now I’m going to keep my eye out for deals on the expansion packs! I highly recommend the Cities and Knights expansion pack. Our family has bought/tried to play both that expansion pack and the Seafarers expansion. Cities and Knights, by far, has been our favorite and much easier to learn because it builds on the original rules of the first game. Seafarers is a little harder to figure out (we are still working on it) because it adds so many new elements to the original game.
Another note: give it time! It took us lots of time and practice to really understand all the rules at first, but once you get it, it’s great! (It took me longer than my 9 year old to figure it out, but I think him and my husband understand strategy games better anyhow.)
