Apple Announces New TV+ Video Subscription Service That Will Try to Compete with Netflix
Apple announced several new services during their keynote event this past week – and they’ve definitely got our attention! From a new video streaming service to a credit card with NO hidden fees and low interest, everyone is talking about Apple. But will the new services be worth the price?
Here’s a peek into the new Apple services…
Apple TV+ (coming this fall)
For starters, Apple unveiled its new video subscription service called Apple TV+ that may give Netflix and Amazon Prime Video a run for their money. Apple TV+ will feature exclusive original shows, movies, and documentaries from artists like Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and more.
However, pricing and availability for the new video subscription service will be announced later this fall.
Additionally, Apple debuted the all-new Apple TV app and Apple TV channels that will be coming this May 2019. You will be able to watch shows, movies, sports, news, and even purchase or rent iTunes movies in the new app, across iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, smart TVs, and streaming devices.
All Apple Channels will be on-demand, ad-free, and the content will be downloadable for offline viewing. Plus, users will be able to share Apple TV+ and subscriptions to Apple TV channels through Family Sharing.
Apple Arcade (coming this fall)
Love playing games? The App Store is the world’s biggest and most successful game platform. And, now Apple is taking it a step further with Apple Arcade, the first game subscription service that will feature over 100 new and exclusive games, coming this fall. Plus, there will be no ads or in-app purchases, and users can play offline anytime!
Also, subscribers will be able to play Apple Arcade games across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, which allows them to pick up where they left off in a game, even if they switch devices. Awesome!
Apple Card (coming this summer)
Apple also announced Apple Card, a new kind of credit card designed by Apple – not a bank! The best part? There are NO fees – which means NO annual, cash-advance, over-the-limit, or late fees, and it’s the first credit card that actually encourages you to pay less interest!
Plus, Apple Card conveniently lives right on your iPhone, in the Wallet app, so you can manage it right on your device. And, for every purchase you make, you’ll get a percentage of your purchase back in Daily Cash that you can spend however you want, right from your iPhone! There’s no limit to how much you can get and it goes right onto your Apple Cash card, so you can use it just like cash.
Apple News+ (available now)
Apple also announced Apple News+, a new subscription service that brings together over 300 popular magazines, leading newspapers, and digital publishers into a convenient and curated experience within the Apple News app. Apple News+ presents articles from renowned publications such as Vogue, National Geographic, People, ELLE, The Wall Street Journal, and Los Angeles Times.
Apple News+ is available to purchase now for $9.99/month, but you can sign up for a free one-month trial to try it out (note that the plan automatically renews after the trial ends). Plus, through Family Sharing, up to six family members can share one Apple News+ subscription.
What do you think of these new services?

Happy to hear that!
Interesting, but missing some important info: How much for these?
Apple News sounds good at $9.99 per month, but kind of duplicates some of the benefits I get through my local library, and that is free.
Information on pricing will be announced later this fall. Hope that helps!
This is not a real competitor to Netflix, Hulu, and Prime. Netflix, Hulu, and Prime have original content and acquired content. Apple TV+ only has original content. The Apple TV Channels part of the service is just a copy of Amazon channels. It lets you pay for other streaming services through Apple. There is no real advantage to giving Apple or Amazon a cut of the supscription fee you are paying to that other streaming service.
Apple currently gets a 15% cut of streaming services purchased through them. HBO isn’t onboard right now. Apple isn’t giving them as good of a deal as Amazon. Apple wants a 30% cut of sales. Netflix and Hulu also won’t be on the new Apple TV app. They will still be available on Apple TV for now. HBO, Showtime, and Starz are expected to be available on the new app for $9.99 each. Apple is also in talks with AT&T.
Is Apple maybe $99 a month. You get Google news free.
Already have Netflix and Prime this would be perfect! I’m so ready to ditch cable.
Sometimes more us not better. The idea was to save money over cable, not spend more.
Not another one. 🤦
The Apple card makes sense. As far as everything else, Apple is dominating in so many areas globally that this will be another home run as they develop and fine tune these subscriptions according to consumer demand. My only issue is the thirst for content to fill all these subscription models means quantity over quality imo. Remember growing up and being happy with 10 basic channels and Saturday morning cartoons? I remember filling my time with reading books, riding my bike and roller skating. Now there’s so much content and options kids end up stuck to their tablets. Sometimes more isn’t better. It’s better for wallets of investors, not necessarily better for society. Just my take on all this new technology.
