Dollar General Is Opening New Stores to Attract Higher-Income Shoppers
There’s a new shopping concept coming from Dollar General!
Dollar General is opening new stores designed to attract higher-income suburban shoppers. Named popshelf, this “differentiated shopping experience” will target women in suburban areas with household incomes between $50,000 and $125,000 a year, said the company in a press release.
Popshelf stores will have a footprint of about 9,000 square feet, making them larger than Dollar General’s traditional stores. According to the company, customers can expect to find a “fun, affordable, and stress-free shopping experience” that makes it easy for them to stay within their budget while treating themselves.
The new popshelf stores will offer an on-trend, rotating selection of seasonal goods, housewares, home décor, health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, paper products, and party goods. The stores will also sell candy, snacks, toys, games, electronics, and other items. Everything will be priced on the dollar, with approximately 95 percent of items costing $5 or less!
The first two popshelf locations are scheduled to open in the Nashville area in the coming weeks. The company has also announced plans to open an additional 30 popshelf locations by the end of the 2021 fiscal year.

They won’t attract anybody if they are as dirty and messy as all the ones we have in Lafayette, IN. Those and the dollar trees in are area are awful!! You can’t sell product if you don’t have it out on the shelves instead of in the mounds of boxes.

Dollar Tree is a different store than Dollar General. Dollar Tree owns Family Dollar, our Dollar Trees are very nice but the Family Dollar stores in our area are very run down.

I avoid these stores at all costs. So dirty, grimey and unorganized. Not worth the hassle and chaos to save a dollar or two! Starting to feel the same way about Walmart. I’ll spend a little more for a comfortable, safe shopping experience.
Yes meee too. I haven’t been in Dollar general for over a year. And I avoid Walmart now as much as I can. I will stop in for something quick that the local grocery store don’t carry, that Walmart does but thats it. (And I like some of Walmart’s clothes Lol). But that’s it.
So, they’re trying for a Big Lots, 5 Below- type experience? Great… Just what we need. :/
This sounds pretty neat!! We have several DG around us & they are very nice. I have seen some that should be shut down, but that comes from terrible work ethic & management. I have also seen one local store shut down bc of terrible management.

Dollar Generals are always so filthy. I swear their baskets have never been cleaned. Prices don’t reflect the level of chaos.
Dollar Tree isn’t the cleanest either, but for $1 I don’t mind. I sort of think of it as a garage sale.
Any stores’ cleanliness, organization, etc. is a reflection on the manager. The store I shop at is well run by the manager and it’s a pleasure to shop there.
So instead of sprucing up their already grimy, rundown stores, they decide to open new ones in higher income areas. They don’t think people in low income areas would like a “fun, affordable, and stress-free shopping experience “? I’ll pass.
We have 5 Dollar General stores in our area and I will not go in them. They are nasty, and overcrowded.

The dollar trees around here are clean and organized but Dollar General is disgustingly filthy and an unorganized mess.
They first need to clean up their filthy stores. There is absolutely no reason for a store to be so nasty.

Agree. Looks same layout/merchandise as Five Below. We just got a Black Friday store in Denver (the other two in Tx) and I’m pretty stoked. Went on $6 day but planning on going back on $1 and fill a bag for $15, once a month. Facebook page is very informative. I found some good deals on pet-related stuff, but you have to “dig” for the bargain.
I’ve never been in a Dollar General since they’re too far away to drive. The two Dollar Trees within walking distance of me are nice and organized, although one didn’t use to be, so maybe new manager. The Big Lots near me, is always clean and has an area to clean your carts and hands, and friendly too. I came back to shop there the past year, after several years of avoiding them for the same reasons here–unorganized, dirty. They all need to step up the cleaning though, especially now.

Only thing that gets me into a Dollar General or Family Dollar or Dollar Tree are the 13 oz cans of 9 Lives cat food for a dollar that you cannot find anywhere else. I am feeding a ton of strays and those big cans help a lot. Also sometimes the smaller cans go on sale 3 for a dollar. That fancy store full of plastic foreign junk does not appeal at all to me. I even avoid Five Below!
So is this new fancy store still going to sell cheap Chinese garbage? So now rich people can buy even more garbage that will end up in landfills…. yay for well off folks.
