This Reader Upcycled Outdated Home Decor for the Cost of Some Spray Paint
We LOVE repurposed home decor ideas! 😍
If you have some out-of-date home decor that you don’t want to throw out but are not sure how to refresh it, then this week’s Happy Friday reader Tiphanie has a great idea for you!
She transformed a piece of wall art into something more modern without spending a fortune. It now fits her current style and kept it out of the landfill – Win win!
I had a big canvas print hanging above the bed in our master bedroom. As time went on, my style changed and I wanted to give our bedroom a make-over. I switched from a more traditional style to a modern farmhouse theme. I wanted something new to go over the top of our bed but everything that I liked was more than I wanted to spend. I decided to DIY it in order to save some money.
I took down the existing wall print and my husband so graciously spray-painted it white for me. I was recently gifted an Etsy gift card for $25, so I found a seller on there that custom-made a large vinyl sticker with a saying that I really liked that I could use on my sign. I was so excited for it to arrive!
After the spray paint dried, (we allowed a full 48 hours to ensure proper application) and my vinyl lettering arrived, it was time to remake my old wall art into something new! It worked like a charm and was a very easy process. My new sign only cost me the price of a can of spray paint since I had the gift card and the original sign. Many of these types of signs that I was looking at were between $79-$129. So this is a total win for me without spending a fortune!

Beautiful redo! So smart to upcycle. And love the saying.
I love that sign so much… I need one! Such a good reminder. ā„ļø
Great job!
Beautiful! For vinyl cutting see if your local library has a makerspace where they might have a vinyl cutter. College and university libraries have makerspace too. Where I work if you are a student or employee there is no charge.
Great tip, lindak! I checked my library and they have machines for vinyl cutting as well as 3D printers…I never would have thought to check there! Thanks!
I get all my custom vinyl from Craftcuts.com-they’re great!
Oh wow! Do they actually do vinyl cutouts or stencils?
Beautiful
It looks great and I love the idea of spray painting an existing canvas. However, I wouldnāt say spray paint was the only cost. Most people donāt have an Etsy gift card lying around. Nothing against this post, itās just a personal pet peeve of mine when blogs says āI made this ottoman/coffee table/etc. for just $2.14!ā but theyāre not factoring in the costs of the wood, fabric, foam, paint, tools, etc. that they happened to have on hand that would cost most people a significant amount of money.
It reminds me of a show I love ā¦.Flea Market Flip. Itās fun to watch but they donāt give the true cost. Theyāll say we spent $50 on this table and transformed it, then sold it for $150 but they donāt factor in wood, glass, those fancy hairpin legs that are just lying around the workshop the contestants are allowed to use. Anyone else wouldnāt have all the expensive tools or the materials lying around and they would have to buy them.
Agreeā¦I was thinking the same. The actual costs are the spray paint and the vinyl lettering. The $25 Etsy gift card could had spent on anything else but went towards this sign, so itās a cost. Still a great project to share tho. Love the result
I was referring to my personal cost. I realize not everyone has a $25 Etsy gift card, but some people may even own a cricut vinyl machine (or have a close friend who does!!) themselves which would greatly mitigate the vinyl costs. I just was excited to remake a larger project and it turn out so wellā¦ so I supposed if we include the vinyl cost which was actually $19.06 and the can of spray paint, the actual total would have been closer to $25, which is a big win-win to me! Especially considering the price of similar store bought pieces ā¦ thanks
Love this sign!! Love how clear you were about your cost as you had a gift card to spend! Also love how you tried to get a price for what it might cost if you didn’t have a gift card. That is really challenging since you don’t know what font or fabric others might choose and all those play into the cost! Thank you so much for sharing it is beautiful.
I loved both the before and after! : )
Absolutely LOVE the new saying! I had not heard that before but I showed my husband and he said – I would love that in the bedroom! What a great reminder not to worry! Thank you for this post!
Yes šš¼!! When I saw that saying for the first time, I just knew I HAD to have that specific quote above our bed! I showed my husband and he loved it as well!! Itās a constant reminderā(Especially with everything that is going on in our world)
God has still got this!!
Iām glad you liked it!! ā¤ļø
