Dollar Tree is Raising Prices for the First Time Ever in Select Stores
It may be time to brace ourselves for higher prices everywhere.
You may have noticed that prices have increased significantly pretty much everywhere lately, and Dollar Tree isn’t immune to the hikes.
Dollar Tree announced earlier this week that, for the first time ever, they’ll be breaking their $1 price promise in some stores. As far as we can tell, the increases will fall in the $0.25-$0.50 range for select items. However, the prices will be changing a bit more noticeably in Dollar Tree Plus stores, and it’s likely we’ll be seeing prices as high as $5 in the Dollar Tree Plus locations.
According to a press release, Dollar Tree is looking to have more Dollar Tree Plus stores up & operating by the end of the year.
Dollar Tree has already announced that it is on track in 2021 to have 500 Dollar Tree Plus stores by fiscal year-end – offering an assortment of value-priced $1, $3, and $5 products. Another 1,500 stores are planned for fiscal 2022, and at least 5,000 Dollar Tree Plus stores are expected by the end of fiscal 2024.”
While Dollar Tree has confirmed that they “will begin testing additional price points above $1 in selected legacy Dollar Tree stores,” they haven’t announced which ones, although it looks like more than 100 legacy stores will be impacted.
Luckily, Dollar Tree has announced that they’re still committed to offering items with a great value for the price, so we can expect to continue seeing the awesome deals we know. But in the future, they may just be a bit pricier than we’re used to.
When is this going to happen?
Hi Mollie! It looks like the higher price points will be within the next year or so at select locations.
ATL stores are already doing this at some locations.
It’s happening in the Charlotte area already.
It will be interesting to see how this affects their business. One of the greatest perks to DT is knowing everything will be a dollar. As prices start to fluctuate, people may realize fewer items are the value they once believed they were vs from other large retailers etc.
Agreed! This is why I stay away from dollar general.
Me too
I kinda feel bad for the employees because you know they are going to get chewed out a lot in the beginning. I am also wondering if everything is going to start coming in priced, or if that will be the employees’ responsibility? If so, it is going to be headache for customers. Considering most Dollar Tree locations look like tornadoes held a rave there due to the employees not facing, cleaning, and performing maintenance, I don’t see them keeping up with pricing stuff.
Brittany “tornadoes holding a rave” Lolol you made my night!
They better be careful and need to consider changing their name with all of the class action lawsuits out there. Wouldn’t that be considered false advertising??
I dunno-5 Below and the 99cents store both have items over those prices. Annoying for sure
Are you one that thinks $15.00 minimum wage is appropriate for employees of Dollar Tree? If so you need an economics class so you can understand, companies don’t run on no profit and most must make a substantial profit to cover expenses and the investors that loan them the money to run those stores. Dollar Tree has never increased prices yet their expenses continue to rise. Hmmm, common sense says they have to raise prices or bankrupt
I’m actually shocked that this hasn’t happened already. With the increase in the costs to mfr products this year, I have no idea how they have held prices to $1 this long. I think a $0.25 increase on items is steep, considering that’s a 25% increase no matter how small it sounds. But I’ll still go there considering similar items are often much higher elsewhere.
I’m not a fan. I spend a ton of DT each year and if I want higher quality things, I know to go to another store, but they are my go-to for cheap things. I go for about 5 things and come out having spent $35, so they do have a niche market that they should continue to service. I know myself and many others who go there to get lots of things for students “because it’s ONLY a dollar”. “Because it is only $1.25” isn’t as convincing bc it will add up w/ lots of students. 🙁
Same here.
Maybe the $1.25 will have an impact, but when I can get googly eyes at Dollar Tree for $1.25 vs. Michaels for $3, I’ll still choose Dollar Tree (as an example, of course).
So true! As a teacher I shop there for my students! If prices go up to 1.25 that will be a huge increase when shopping for a whole class!
I might choose to do without! They would def. lose lots of teacher customers who shop in bulk!
But if they’re servicing their niche market by selling goods at little to no profit it doesn’t make sense for them as a business.
I’d rather sell one item for $4 profit than 8 items for $0.50 profit. I’d rather sell nothing than sell thousands of items while losing a penny on each one.
we can thank the current administration for that…….printing $$$= inflation…..
Please not again:(
You’re right about that!!
If you think tRump won..get back onboard your “Q” space ship and fly away
Seriously 😳
This doesn’t have anything to do with thinking trump won, it is basic economics.
Exactly
Correct! Also, If I wanted fluctuating price points, I would go to Five Below!
Five below is more like $10-$15 below in our area. They have raised prices also.
Very true
Correct
🤦🏻♀️ Don’t be so naive and look into researching “made in China” reports by NPR about coal and gas prices there by the government raising prices on businesses.
100%
Dollar Tree needs to be careful for what they wish for. 🙂

We will see steep rises in everything. A major reason is the collapse in the supply chain. The sailors we depend on are exhausted. Stuck for months on end onboard, exhausted, and underpaid they are not signing back on. Truckers, retail workers and dock workers have had it as well. Covid has taken a huge toll in the manufacturing sector as well. Read the business news if you want to know what is happening months before your local news covers it. Costco is renting its own shipping containers and anticipating shortages and beefing up its supplies now. We live in a global world but unfortunately in the US our focus is mostly local. I’m the child of depression era parents. They lived by the rule of 3 to 6 month supply of food and essentials. Following it has always served me well.
The thing is, although it may be a legitimate reason for raising prices now, once they raise them they take advantage and never lower them. Corporations are criminal.
That’s insane. Rising costs for the goods, shipping, energy, labor and taxes. Yeah I have no idea why they have to charge more than $1 for an item 🤦♀️.
All this planned by design. Can u say usher in NWO
No. I can not.
I stopped by on my walk this morning to pick up my mom and sis’s birthday cards. I don’t get too many, but hope they keep the 2/$1 Hallmark cards there. They have some cute craft items and picked up a few tiny (holds 1-2 tablespoons of product) organizer/storage containers I’ve been meaning to get. When the 99 cent store went up in price, I stopped shopping there. It was too hard to figure out what things cost since they were not all marked. Plus I can’t walk to it anyway. I do like the heads up here on Hip2Save when there is something special at Dollar Tree. I’ll probably still shop there because it’s next to my grocery store I walk to.
I am a retail supervisor for Hallmark. They won’t be leaving DT and the prices won’t rise on the cards anytime soon.
Thank you Hip2Save Team for this awesome helpful post! I am grateful! To Mrs. Judy H, you are wonderful and kind! Thank you for your kindness and your time. I appreciate you taking the time to let us know this essential information. It is so helpful for me and my family and my community in Maryland. I am grateful because I love Dollar Tree and I super love the Hallmark Cards Company so much. It has my one of my ultimate favorite stores since I was 12 years old and I would create handwritten cards to send to my grandparents and godparents for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas each year. It is my favorite item to purchase 2 for 1$ promotion at the Dollar Tree every month when I visit the store in my community. My local community truly appreciates the affordable Hallmark Cards as well. I truly admire and appreciate the Mahogany Line, it is so special and beautiful line of cards. I walk straight to the card section to pick up all of the birthday, congratulations, thinking of you and get well Hallmark cards. It has a wide variety and spectacular card collection to choose from for showing love to my family and friends. I am thankful for the Hallmark Mahagony line because it creates for customers a beautiful card to share with loved ones and grandparents to mail and enjoy in this difficult Covid 19 pandemic . I appreciate your act of kindness and the comment you wrote today! You made my day! I am excited to continue purchasing the 2 for 1$ Hallmark cards from Dollar Tree this Fall Season and throughout the years! I hope that you abd your family have a blessed and joyful day!

People did you even read. It said Dollar Tree plus stores not regular Dollar Tree. Everything is going up happens all the time. Nothing stays the same price forever. Do we wish prices would stay the same or even be lowered yes but its not going to happen.
Click the link to the actual press release. The last sentence in the first paragraph reads “will begin testing additional price points above $1 in selected legacy Dollar Tree stores.”
So yes, it does include the regular Dollar Tree stores as well.
That’s inaccurate. It’s regular DT too.
They will have the Plus stores but are transitioning all stores.
I’ve noticed the quality of a lot (not all) DT items has gone down over the years. With cost up and value down, I’m not shopping there as much as I used to.
yes i noticed the wrapping paper is practically see through and its shorter too so not only is there less of it but its not as good
Dollar Tree was the only dollar store at this point (excluding the Plus stores) where dollar in their name, actually meant $1 items. I guess I’ll start stocking up on things that I buy frequently in case they raise the price on those items.
They have several “Plus” stores in my area. Texas. I dislike it too. Some of the things like the lysol wipes were $5. Amazon had them for $4. That was my go especially after 99 cent stores started raising their prices.
My local DT is a dump. They also do not have any employees to work. Mine is now closed on Sundays with shortened hours during the week.
This CAN’T happen! Where do I complain?!?!?!?
I will do my part by not buying anything over $1. If we all refuse, they won’t be able to do it.
You better start boycotting every store in America then, because this isn’t just a Dollar Tree issue. This is a widespread issue — container shortage in China, shortage of employees willing to work in the US, etc. We work with over 40 different suppliers and every single one is raising prices, which yes will then be passed on to the consumer. Things are going to be sparse this holiday season too — I’d highly recommend starting your holiday shopping earlier.
I shop there just so I don’t have to check prices and everything’s the same. I don’t shop at Dollar General or Family Dollar because I might as well go to Walmart.
I bet they will slowly phase out all $1.00 prices and eventually everything in the store will be higher.
I was in NM in August and some beauty items were priced as high as $7!
They mentioned that only certain items will go up in price so you might still be able to find what you regularly get for $1. It’s like anything else, some things are worth buying at DT and some or not! I personally won’t stop going because of that, I will just not purchase what I don’t think is worth it and move on. Y’all have a great week!!
Wait won’t they have to change their name? Sometimes a Dollar, maybe. Almost a Dollar? LOL
Same thing happened with Target’s Dollar spot. Increased items to $3 then $5. Not a whole lot of $1 items now
The 100 legacy stores link leads to a WSJ article hidden behind a paywall. The link is useless unless you have a subscription.

Do a straight Google search”Dollar Tree raises its prices”. the WSJ article is right there along with other major newspapers covering it. Very little is really behind a paywall. A public library card puts the publishing world at your fingertips as well as Google.
Hi, Sara! I’ve changed that link so you can read more.
This is what happens when you raise wages. The money to increase wages has to come from somewhere. You can’t have it both ways!
My dollar tree been selling higher priced items. They look like they came from Five Below.
Nice, now it’s the $2.50 store. What crap.
I use to go to the .99 cent store a lot and quit when they raised prices. I really liked knowing that every single thing I picked up was the same price and when they started raising prices on some things nothing was ever priced and then you would get to the register and it would be how much is this one how much is this one and how much is this one and so many things were just way overpriced for a bargain store so I went to putting a whole bunch of it back and I just quit going. Probably do the same thing with the dollar tree.
EVERYTHING is going up in price. Nothing is cheap anymore. No more free 2 day shipping.
I’ve always had the long-standing joke of Dollar General is not generally a dollar. I guess I need to add Dollar Tree to that list! 😉
we have other Dollar stores, not dollar tree. I don’t will all dollar stores increase price once dollar tree starts first.
This is my own opinion so please don’t reply with rude comments. I wish we could go back to trump’s policies. Day 1 when the current illegitimate president took office and killed and signed a stack full of executive orders we’ve suffered with our pocketbooks.
Amen!!
Thanks for the heads up H2S!
This is very sad because people are having with making ends meet and now one more thing people will putting out more money to live. When will the world be looking out for the lower class?
Just look to white house for the reason
