This Reader Made Her Own Elderberry Syrup & Saved Over $120!
Looking for a wellness tip?
In the midst of flu season, we’re looking for as many helpful remedies as possible to avoid getting sick before the holidays! Luckily, this week’s Happy Friday reader Brenda is sharing how she reaps the benefits of elderberry syrup without splurging.
Two Christmas’ ago, my sister sent me a large mason jar of elderberry syrup. She had heard and read about all the benefits of elderberry and thought it would be good for me to take, too. The jar cost over $50, but it did last 2 months, and I never got as much as a cold.
I didn’t like the idea of paying so much for another jar, so I searched and found a recipe to make my own…
For the price of a 1lb bag of organic dried elderberry on Amazon ($20-25), a jar of organic ginger powder, organic clove powder, and ground cinnamon ($1.99 each on Lidl – with enough for about three bags of elderberries) and honey (large bottle for $9.99), I make 3 large jars of elderberry syrup (one jar at a time when needed), saving over $120 compared to 3 jars purchased. If you have never used elderberry, I highly recommend it.
Since I started taking it 2 years ago, I hardly ever get sick. Also, my 10-year-old son came home from school one day, unable to stop sniffling from a constant runny nose. I gave him a teaspoon (tablespoon for adults), and, by the following day, there were no more sniffles or snots!!
What a clever way to feel good and save money, Brenda! I will definitely be trying this myself. We have posted deals in the past for saving money on various Elderberry products, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled if you do plan on purchasing!

So she just mixed all the ingredients together? How much is measured for each batch?
Hello there! The recipe that this reader is using is not available to us. We just wanted to share how she managed to save over $120. Hope that’s helpful.🥰
There are lots of recipes for making elderberry syrup online if you search it. I’ve tried a couple different recipes and they’ve all seemed effective. We grow our own elderberry so I’m using fresh, not dried, which affects the amount used but I was able to find a conversion chart online to see how much fresh to use. I’ve tried varieties that add the spices mentioned above and also ones that haven’t used any honey. The spices and honey are more to make it taste good (I know that they are supposed to be good for you too) but elderberry by itself isn’t very tasty. Pretty much you’ll boil the elderberry and spices in some water and let it simmer, then squeeze the juices out of the berries then dispose of the squeezed berries. Then add honey. If you’re using raw honey you’ll want to wait til it cools so as not to kill the good properties of the honey. Although I found the honey incorporated much better while the syrup was warm.
Thanks so much. I appreciate the explanation.
Be sure to use local honey to get the most benefits you want the flora from your area
Thanks for mentioning that, Shari!!❤️🐝
The only problem I’ve found with that is to get the honey to incorporate fully I’ve had to add it while the elderberry syrup was still warm and I know if honey is heated too much it kills some of the good properties. I would almost rather use the big jug of Costco honey for the syrup and just take a teaspoon of local honey per day as well.
Thanks so much for sharing, Beth! It’s good to know what has worked best for you. 🥰
Why did I never think of this?!?! Thank you guys for posting!
You’re so welcome!💗
I always bought elderberry – our pediatrician recommends it. This year I decided to try making it and I cant believe how easy it is!! And so much cheaper. Like another reader says – make sure to use local honey. This is the recipe I use:

Like stated above, you’ll absolutely want to use local honey for the best benefits, and I’d recommend purchasing Elderberry from a more trustworthy source than Amazon: a local farmer you trust the growing practices of, Frontier Co-Op or Mountain Rose Herbs.
Here’s a super simple recipe with directions from Mountain Rose: https://blog.mountainroseherbs.com/elderberry-syrup-recipe
We sure appreciate you sharing this feedback.😊💕
Love this!!
Yay! We do, too!💖🥰
Don’t do elderberry if you have autoimmune. ❤️
Please do not use the cinnamon in the picture. This is a low quality cassia cinnamon blend and can prove harmful when consumed in the higher dosage like in Elderberry Syrup. It also contains other fillers and barks. Please purchase a quality organic Ceylon Cinnamon for your Elderberry Syrup and enjoy the added health benefits. Also, you should be using whole cloves and ginger root, not powders. – From someone who makes this stuff by the gallon.
Kelly, I’m interested in more information. Please email karramelkiss@hotmail.com. Thanks.
