This Reader Scored a Deal on Veggies + Made Them Last Longer
Scoring grocery deals on veggies?
Occasionally, you’ll find “Manager’s Deals” at grocery stores. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, this is when items including vegetables, fruits, dairy, and others are closely approaching their expiration date. Just because a product is approaching the date labeled does not mean it’s expired.
When buying discounted veggies, the question begs, “how can I make this last longer?” This week’s Happy Friday reader Karen not only scored a deal but also extended the livelihood of veggies with this Hip tip!
I always go into a grocery store and buy vegetables or fruits that are Manager’s Special. At my local grocery store, every now and then they will bag up vegetables or fruits that they can’t sell. Today, I scored two $2 bags of broccoli rabe and broccoli – all this for $4!!!
Actually, the broccoli rabe did not look this nice when I grabbed the $2 bag which had 4 heads of broccoli rabe in it. When I came home, I cut off about 1 inch from the stem and let it sit in water. For the broccoli… I cut off about a quarter inch and put it in water. All this goes in the fridge. I do this with asparagus, too! Now, I have fresh vegetables for the week!
Karen, this is a great idea! We love that it works with a variety of veggies and are definitely going to give it a try. Hip2Savers, don’t be intimidated by discounted veggies; there are ways to stretch out the longevity AND score savings in the process!
Our Hip sidekick Lina has done similar measures for vegetables, including keeping leafy greens, bell peppers, and cucumbers in the fridge lined with paper towels. She also stores baby carrots in water in the fridge. Curious about hacks for fruit? We’ve tried these three ways to preserve strawberries, and they all worked incredibly.
Not a fan of the extra work? Try purchasing a berry keeper or produce keeper!

I am going to try this! Thanks for sharing this post.
You’re so welcome! I’m going to give it a try too! 🙌❤️
Thank you. I will try this when I have to much from our garden. Lov eit.
Yay! Hope it’s successful for you too! 💞
I do this with my cilantro and it lasts a really long time, it would probably work with other herbs as well.
Thanks for letting us know this has worked with Cilantro! 🙌
Instead of throwing away broccoli stalks, grate them to make broccoli slaw/salad, or just add the grated broccoli stalks to a green salad.
