This Homemade Key Lime Pie is Sweet & Tangy!
Where are my key lime pie fans?!
I recently made a homemade key lime pie for the first time and loved how it turned out! It’s an easy and fresh dessert that is a perfect addition to any summer occasion. Turns out key lime pie is also a very simple and fool-proof recipe to make!
Eating keto? We have an awesome keto key lime pie recipe for you to check out on Hip2Keto.com too!
Watch me make these on Instagram here!
The result is a rich and creamy pie with lots of citrus flavors that is so refreshing and YUM! It’s so satisfying to turn some fresh key limes into a stunning pie that your family is gonna LOVE. 💚
I am lucky enough to have a key lime tree in our backyard!
It produces more limes than I know what to do with during the summer months, so it makes me so happy to make something with the juice. Compared to traditional limes, key lime juice tastes a little more tart and aromatic with hints of floral. It took me about 25-30 tiny limes using my handheld juice squeezer to get enough lime juice for this pie.
More helpful tips when making key lime pie:
-
- You can either purchase key limes for this dessert or buy key lime juice in a bottle to save the step of juicing! My Hip teammate Emily went this route and loved the result all the same. For a similar citrus taste, I’ve read that you can combine equal parts lemon juice and lime juice in a pinch!
-
- I baked a simple graham cracker crust for my pie, but you could purchase a 9-inch store-bought one if desired to save time.
-
- Fresh key lime zest makes this dessert extra delicious! Having a nice zester makes this task a cinch, and I happen to love my zester from Amazon so check it out if you need one. If you don’t have access to key limes, use lime zest as a close substitute.
Key Lime Pie

prep time: 20 MINUTES
cook time: 23 MINUTES
total time: 43 MINUTES
Fresh squeezed key lime juice gets turned into a sweet and tangy pie with a yummy creamy texture and whipped cream topping.
Ingredients
For the crust:
- 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
- 5 tablespoons melted butter
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the key lime filling:
- 2 (14 oz.) cans sweetened condensed milk
- 2/3 cup fresh squeezed key lime juice
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 tablespoon key lime zest
For the whipped cream:
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
1
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Prepare a 9-inch pie pan by greasing it with butter or nonstick spray.
2
Mix the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl, and then transfer to the pie pan. Press the mixture evenly to the bottom and around the sides.
3
Place the pie crust into the oven and bake for 10 minutes, or until slightly browned. Remove from the oven and let cool.
4
In a mixing bowl, add the sweetened condensed milk, key lime juice, sour cream, and lime zest. Mix until smooth, and pour it on top of the graham cracker crust.
5
Place the pie back into the oven and bake for 10-13 minutes, or until tiny bubbles form on the surface. Remove from the oven and let cool.
6
Place in the fridge for at least a couple of hours up to overnight.
7
To make the whipped cream topping, pour the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract into a mixing bowl. Beat the mixture until light yet stiff peaks form.
8
Spread the mixture over the top of the pie, or place the whipped cream in a dessert decorating tool to pipe on top of the pie and decorate as desired with whipped cream and lime garnish. Enjoy!

This pie tastes like you’re on a tropical vacation!
It’s very rich, so a small slice is all you need, and the flavor is sweet yet a little tart with key lime flavor.
My family went crazy over this delicious key lime pie and I hope you all enjoy it too!
Check out what my teammate Emily had to say after making this key lime pie for her dad’s birthday 💚:
“I don’t even know where to start with describing this pie other than I think you should stop reading this quote already and go make it because it is out of this WORLD! It’s my dad’s favorite pie and I had never known how simple it can be to make! I swapped the fresh-squeezed key lime juice for a bottled version instead (still amazing) and I used TruWhip instead of making homemade whipped cream (again, still amazing).
I think next time I’ll buy a storebought crust too to make it even easier! 🙌 I wanted to try out Lina’s because the cinnamon addition sounded amazing, though I use crushed gluten-free graham crackers instead since half of my family has Celiacs. I also sped up the cooling process by chilling in the fridge for about 45 minutes and then putting it in the freezer for an hour. It was perfect!
This pie is sweet, tart, tangy, creamy, and my dad said it’s been one of his favorite key lime pies…and this is coming from someone who has key lime pie on his birthday every year 😂 This was seriously the best and easiest dessert I’ve made in a while! I highly recommend getting all the ingredients now (which there aren’t too many!) and making it this week — you will not regret it! I’ve already been asked to make this again next week LOL”
This easy frozen lemonade pie is another refreshing option to make this summer!
Yum! I didn’t know it was so easy to make.
Is there anything I can use in place of sweetened condensed milk for diabetics? I am GF so will be replacing those, but hubby can’t have that sugar… Curios if we can make it with something in place of, cuz it sounds amazing!
I would check out the keto version my teammate Emily wrote about here —> https://hip2save-com-develop.go-vip.co/hip2keto/recipes/keto-key-lime-pie/
I’m a type 2 diabetic and I used granulated monk fruit sweetener..works great
Oh yum yes love that sweetener also. 🙌
Going to try this sometime. Sounds delicious. I have a crust “hack”. Use Lorna Doon Shortbread cookies over Graham crackers. We do this for cheesecake and it makes the BEST crust ever!!
Oh nice! Sounds very yummy 🙌
