IKEA is working on furniture sustainability!

No more staring at that 5-year-old piece of furniture you wish you never bought. IKEA has now made its Buy Back & Resell program permanent for its 37 stores across the US!

The program will only accept IKEA brand furniture items including the following:

  • office drawer cabinets
  • sideboards
  • bookcases
  • small tables
  • multimedia furniture
  • cabinets
  • dining tables
  • desks and chairs
  • stools without upholstery

All items have to be fully assembled. IKEA doesn’t mind if the furniture is used, of course, just as long as it is functional! If you’ve altered or customized your furniture in any way, it will not be accepted for this program.

Each item considered for the Buy Back & Sell program will have to pass an inspection based on functionality, age, and condition. Once it passes, you’ll collect store credit! “Excellent” condition gets a 50% credit, “very good” gets 40% credit, and “well used” gets 30% credit.

“IKEA is on a journey to become a circular and climate positive business by 2030… We want to help create a sustainable movement in society and inspire our customers to acquire, care for and pass on IKEA products in more sustainable ways.” – Javier Quiñones, IKEA U.S. President and Chief Sustainability Officer

When this program was in its pilot phase, it was extremely successful during its pilot at IKEA’s Conshohocken, PA location, where 100% of the products bought back were resold rather than recycled! Sustainability is important to IKEA, which is amazing for the future. Let us know if this program interests you!

Does it only have to be IKEA furniture?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yes. Just the items included in the list above. Hope that helps! 💞

The ikea furniture I’ve had isn’t useable after a few years. It’s pressed board and doesn’t hold up well. Not sure how this will work. Maybe it was just the pieces I’ve had.

We bought a kitchen table at IKEA and the top got scratched. The areas where it was scratched then developed puckering and separating issues. I had thought that the table was solid wood, but soon found it was particle board, just like you had. Thanks for sharing!

Quite impressive!!! Maybe they saw how much people were making reselling their IKEA furniture when they were done with it and figured they might as well be involved in the mix.

I am surprised they are doing this. What if someone has bed bugs in their furniture and it spreads to the whole store? Not sure I like this idea

    • Lisa

Bedbugs won’t be an issue. They only buy back wood and metal furniture. There’s a huge list of what they won’t accept and all textiles and upholstery is on the NO list.
