Love this book. Bought it last year on a whim and was reading it to myself. Two chapters in, my wife asked how it was and I read a bit to her. My oldest (10) came in and asked what I was reading. I started from the beginning and began reading aloud, doing different voices for all the characters. He LOVED it.
He wants me to reread it this year after Thanksgiving.
We bought this book on a whim because it was by J.K. Rowling. I was a little surprised at the themes of the first few chapters, but we read it with my 7 and 5-year-old and they of course thought the divorce and moving were sad, but they also have friends at school with that exact situation and I feel that it helped them empathize and understand what their friends had been through.
Once you are past the first few chapters the symbolism and themes are fascinating. I love the way Rowling develops her characters over time. As an adult, I felt the ending was fairly predictable, and it made my children laugh and cry (both happy and sad). The Audible narration is great, and we bought the audiobook as well after purchasing the hard copy.
This will be a holiday tradition in our house every year!

Is this a good book?
I should’ve read the reviews first- not impressed with the rough divorce right in the beginning and then mom remarries and it’s the stepsister that throws his pig out the window. And the kid depends on the pig because he doesn’t feel comfortable expressing his feelings about the divorce or dating or remarriage… I feel a child psychologist would have a heyday with this one. Returning asap.
