Here’s what to know about AT&T’s data breach.

Are you an AT&T customer? The company recently learned that nearly all of its customers have been impacted by a data breach that involves files containing AT&T records of calls and texts.

The data does not contain the content of texts or calls nor does it contain sensitive personal information like Social Security numbers or birthdates. Personal names are not part of these records either, however, there are sometimes ways to acquire customer names based off phone numbers.

How do you know if your AT&T account is part of the data breach?

AT&T is contacting owners of impacted accounts by text, email, or U.S. mail. Active customers can also check their status by logging into their online AT&T account.

Hip2Save Sidekick, Bryn, was able to log into her account and check to see if her information was affected in the breach (as you can see from her screenshot above, her account was not affected).

The records in question are from between May 1, 2022, and October 31, 2022. For certain customers, records from January 2, 2023, were also compromised. These records belong to AT&T cellular customers, customers of mobile virtual network operators using AT&T’s wireless network, and also any AT&T landline customers who interacted with those cellular customers.

AT&T has released a statement stressing that the company does not believe any of these stolen records are publicly available. You can visit their website for more information.

Fortunately, AT&T has taken steps to prevent further illegal access and is working with law enforcement to bring those involved to justice. Police have arrested one person so far.

I hoped they would have learned from their last data breach that they announced earlier this year.

  2. Ben

I wonder how many customers are affected if they only have AT&T for their Wi-Fi in their car because OnStar contracts with AT&T!
