Sent from reader, Sheri:

I always find that the guys in my life are the hardest to shop for and rather than getting them clothes or video games this year, I wanted to do something different. My boyfriend was really interested in the beer advent calendar at Costco, but he didn’t like the type of beers that were included.

So I decided to make my own twist on the beer advent calendar and I called it the 12 days of Beer (25 days of beer might be a bit too much especially with the 22oz bottles I bought!). My boyfriend really likes craft beers, and I was able to find a variety of beers at Bevmo and Safeway. Most places like Safeway or Bevmo will also give you discounts when you buy in larger quantities and they allow you to mix and match.

I wrapped up each bottle and used green duct tape (from the dollar store) on the cap so he couldn’t see what beer it was. I recycled an old cardboard box and wrapped it up as well. Then I put shredded green crinkle paper in between the bottles for some padding. The box was just for presentation since I wanted the beers to be chilled in the fridge.

Next year, I’m thinking of making it a true advent calendar but still sticking with the beer theme (i.e. 12 different beers but including other beer related items like a pint glass, a bottle opener, pretzels, peanuts, etc. for the other days). Cheers!

  7. sara

Fun idea. I’ve been married for 14 years and he is the only one I am not done shopping for. Clueless on what to get him, I am 100% going to steal this idea. Thank you for sharing.

  8. momo

Oh this is perfect for those craft beer type of guys, lol. But I think it would also cost alot, lol;-)

  9. Denise

  11. Brittany

100% stealing this!! Thanks for the awesome idea!

  12. Steff

Sorry, but in my house we don’t drink. Would be nice I guess for those who do.

    • Stefanie

This could be done with non-alcoholic drinks as well. Soda, bottled tea or coffee, lemonade, etc. It’d be cheaper too.

      • Christine

That’s a good idea for us non drinkers.

    • Rebecca

Not to be snipey, but why comment on it then?

      • Jessica

        Exactly.

      • Jess

        My thought exactly

      • Christine

No, I was not intending it the way you 2 took it. I was replying to Stefanie’s comment. She had a good idea for using non alcoholic drinks for us non drinkers. You should read all comments before you judge someone else for their comment.

        • Rebecca

Sorry Christine, I replied to Steff’s comment, not yours. Someone saying you can use non-alcoholic drinks is a helpful comment…I just don’t know why someone would comment only to say sorry, we don’t drink in our house.

          • Christine

Apology accepted. Thanks for clearing that up.

      • 50ShadesofLipstick

It’s no different from when a recipe is posted here and people comment about how they don’t eat carbs or how they’re vegan etc…it’s just a comment. I wouldn’t look into it that deeply lol

        • Rochelle

Well, to be fair, I think those comments are pretty obnoxious/judgmental, too… 😝

          • 50ShadesofLipstick

That’s fine and all- but since we can’t police other ppl’s comments, it’s easier (and kinder) to just let it go sometimes. Just my .02.

            • Lynn

This reminds me of a post from another blog site showing how someone left a bin of waters and treats for their delivery people on their porch, which was greatly appreciated by most. People were commenting positively but this one “delivery person” posted on a message to “leave treats with no artificial stuff in it” (I’m assuming because Little Debbie’s and mini bags of chips were left) and I thought that was so unnecessary to comment that. Someone is doing something nice, just move on if it’s not your “cup of tea”. Kindness is always the way to go. Happy Holidays to all!

  13. Lexi

    Great idea!

  14. Lolie

My husband would love this! Thanks for sharing!

  15. Princess

This is an awesome idea. I know your boyfriend will enjoy this.

  16. Sheri

Glad I could help! My bf was super surprised and he loved the idea of it. It can be somewhat expensive ($70) for all the beers that I bought, but I would have spent that anyways on his present. If you have time, I highly recommend going to your local breweries as you will often find cheaper beers there and “special” releases. You can definitely make it cheaper, by using less beer and more snacks for the other days.

I understand that there are some people that don’t drink, but in that case, I say make your own twist on an advent calendar based on what your recipient likes (i.e. a baking advent calendar, a cookie one, a tea one, a hot wheel one, etc.) the possibilities are endless!

    • Angela V.

Love this idea Sheri, thanks for sharing! I saw the one at Costco but would’ve never thought to put together a custom one. 🙂

    • Rochelle

I think it’s a brilliant idea, and I’ve been drooling over that Aldi’s wine advent calendar that’s only sold in Europe right now. Hope it makes its way to the States! Thanks, and merry Christmas!

  17. Brittany

Two years ago Costco sold beer scent calendars for 60 bucks, filled with cool/weird German beers (most of which we had never tried). It was awesome! It’s hard to keep up though—you’ll need a January fitness resolution lol.

    • Melissa

You know it’s actually a thing to do “dry January “. I think it makes up for all the festive December drinking 😉

  18. katie

OT, but does anyone have a Shutterfly code for an ornament that they won’t be using? If so, please email me at couponmyrick @ Gmail dot com. Either that, or a code for $ off any purchase. Thanks!

  19. Jill

    Great idea. Very creative.

  20. Lynn

OT I have a $10 off $10 savings code for Personal Creations up for trade. Looking for Kohl’s cash, JcPenneys cash or other gc. Email me offers.

  21. Big Heart

What a clever idea. Thanks for sharing.

  22. Trina

I love this idea!! My husband and I (and a lot of our friends) are craft beer lovers and love trying new ones. It definitely gets expensive but is such fun idea. We like to build 6 packs of beer with various themes (whether in the names/labels or the styles of the beers) for each other or for friends, and this makes it more festive. Thanks for sharing!

  23. christina

I actually did this for my husband this year. He is an engineer, so when I drew up a sketch of what I had seen and liked he made it out of metal. If only I could add a picture here. It turned out amazing.

  24. Stephanie

I also made something similar for my husband as a countdown to Christmas. We don’t drink but I purchased all kinds of specialty root beers. He loved it!

  25. Beckah

Great idea! Cracker Barrel has a fun variety of old-timey sodas and root beers that you can buy individually. This would make it a fun teen gift as well.

  26. Kitkat

What a wonderful idea and gift! Totally stealing this! THANK YOU!
