Martha & Marley Spoon (a collaboration with Martha Stewart) offers meal kits that include the fresh, pre-portioned ingredients that you’ll need to cook tasty meals shipped directly to you, along with the easy recipes to follow to prepare them. These kits are designed to make a home-cooked meal something you can enjoy any night of the week, even if you’re short on time.
How does it work?
First, select your plan. If you choose the 2 person plan for 2 meals per week, your total will be only $18 after the $30 credit – less than $5 per person per meal. Need more food? You can choose the 4 person plan for 2 meals per week and pay only $46 after the credit. Once you finish the sign up process, you can then view and edit your menu selections.
You’ll even have the chance to note your Dietary and Delivery Preferences, how many meals you’d like to cook each week (choose between 2-4 meals) and how many people you’re cooking for (choose between 2-4 people).
What’s the catch?
When you sign up for Martha & Marley Spoon, you’ll be automatically signed up for weekly meal delivery. Each week, Martha & Marley Spoon will create an order for you unless you have either requested a skip or canceled your account. Skips and edits must be received seven days prior to the scheduled delivery day.
Here’s what Hip2Save readers have to say…
I liked it more than my Hello Fresh experience personally. It was very good. The meals were quicker, easier and they tasted fantastic.
I tried Martha & Marley Spoon as well as many other meal delivery services and this one was my favorite. Our favorite Marley Spoon was the shrimp and snow peas (restaurant quality and I’m no chef!! Lots of meal options and more customization than the other companies.
We got our first box last week and I was impressed! We have tried almost every one of the delivery meal plans and the ingredients and ease of this one was superior!
With all of these meals plans, I really wonder who has the money to pay this much for dinner! Even with this credit, $10 just to feed myself and my husband for dinner at home?! Oh how I wish.
It’s more than I like to pay for a meal, but we look at it as – if it saves us from saying “let’s just go out/order takeout”, we’ve saved $20+.
I was super excited to try this service when Hip last posted a deal. I work a 40hr/wk office job with an hour commute each way, have an 8yo with an 8:30 bedtime and hate (and am bad at) cooking. We’re stuck in a food rut and usually end up throwing any leftovers away. $24 for a homecooked meal when I didn’t have to find a recipe and the ingredients showed up at my door sounded great! Unfortunately the recipes had WAY too many steps. Plus when I go to the grocery store I buy everything I can already diced, minced, sliced, shredded, etc. This got me over my fear of cooking steak. But long term I couldn’t justify paying more to do more work. The recipes sounded delicious though and the ingredients were all fresh and seemed high quality. This would probably be great for a SAHM who can start prepping dinner at 4:00-5:00pm, someone single who wants to learn how to cook or or a childless professional couple who can wait to eat dinner until 8:00+. Unfortunately it just didn’t work for me/my family as much as I wanted it to.
Thanks for the super helpful feedback!
You should try dinnerly, I’ve heard good things about them being very simple and easy to make. I’ve used home chef, hello fresh, and blue apron. Blue apron had the most steps and home chef the least. I enjoyed most of the meals I received and loved the convenience.
I was just talking about this with my mom today. I have tried a similar service but it’s still hard if you have a full time job, and a family who has different likes and dislikes. I would do this if I lived alone and only had to cook for myself.
As a single mom of 3 (sometimes 7!) kids (90% + placement) with a big demanding job and a house that takes a huge level of effort to maintain, I’m grateful for Marley Spoon. I initially subscribed because it was too good of a deal to pass up. However, I maintain my subscription because it adds so much value to our lives. I will not feed my children crap. In the past, I’ve spent my entire Sundays preparing meals for the week – wasting valuable time that could be spent making memories with me kids.
We live in a rural area and we don’t have a grocery store. In the summer, I can buy local produce; however, in the winter, it’s inconvenient to grocery shop. I don’t have time to shop for fresh ingredients, to meal plan, or to consider our nutritional balance needs at the dinner table. Marley Spoon has taken so much stress out of my life.
Highly recommend. 😀
Awesome! I’m so glad it works so well for your family!
Ive tried many of the meal services in an attempt to eat healthier and learn new recipes. I liked Sunbasket the best of all, then Home Chef, then Marley Spoon and Hello Fresh.
Sunbasket had the most menu choices for my picky clan. Theyre also organic and you can choose if you want gluten free, dairy free, soy free.
I found all the companies were easy to cancel—no cust service issues at all. All came well packaged and on time, and all the recipes were easy to follow and had fresh ingredients. Some were more lengthy than others but you can select that when you order. Ive learned better cooking techniques and have made some of the recipes repeatedly on my own afterwards because they were so good/easy. Its really helped me get out of a rut with cooking.
If anyone would like to try these others I have a $35 coupon for Home Chef and $40 for Sunbasket I can share. Just email me ahoerschelman@yahoo.com
My family did not care for the meals. Not kid friendly. Way too many steps too.
I agree with your review. I found sunbasket to be much more kid friendly. My 2.5 year old eats I all up. There are more options to choose from every week vs Martha, which helps when dealing with kids. If you’d like to try here is a $40 off https://sunbasket.com/invite/Lisa1071808
Bummer! Sorry to hear these meals required to many steps! I like a simpler meal as well. Thanks a bunch for sharing your experience!
My Hubby and I LOVE to cook – to the point we get a little nuts when the food porn shows up in the mail (Food & Wine, Bon Appetite, Sunset, All Recipes, Cooking Light, etc). For us Martha & Marley Spoon has been our favorite. Our kid is not picky and usually hates kid menu items because they taste bland to him – and this service was so cool because he could “help” with some of the steps and see on the recipe card what needed to be done.
Price-wise, we are pretty savvy shoppers with access to lots or organic and humane/grass fed options. This was a bit over what we would spend at the grocery store – but the discount code we used made it worth our while. The meals had amazing flavor and were fun for all of us to work on together. The ingredients were beautiful and great quality! Another cool plus, the packaging was nearly 90% recyclable – lots of level 1 – and no level 5! Very impressed with that!
What we did not like was the use of spice blends that are used in the recipes are proprietary only and cannot be purchased so you can recreate the recipe on your own later. Nor, do they give you a recipe to create the blend on your own. We use these services to discover new meals outside of our usual and if we cannot make it again on our own, it’s a big let down.
If your family prefers bland flavors, fast food and little change – you should check out their other service, Dinnerly (less ingredients and steps – simpler recipes). Otherwise, if/when you eat out you prefer sit down meals you wouldn’t normally make yourself and enjoy cooking – or want to enjoy cooking – I would recommend giving this a go.
Mizz Mo, you are so lucky! My husband does not like to cook at all, but the few times I’ve convinced him to cook with me, I loved it. I’ll keep working on it 🙂
I’ve never tried this service but my family LOVES HelloFresh! Super easy to make and great food! It cost 59.95 for three meals for two people…seemed steep at first but if I’m making three meals I always seem to spend close to this lol. It’s worth a try. If you use my code you can get three whole meals for 2 people for under 20.00….they give you 40.00 off and I’ll get a 20. Credit too! Thanks if you try my code!!
