According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, states return about $4 billion in unclaimed money every year from companies that cannot locate the owners.
About 1 in every 7 Americans has “unclaimed money,” and some of it could be yours! Unclaimed money could include funds from past employers, utility companies, stocks, mutual funds, safe deposit box contents, uncashed checks, insurance policies, and more.
Follow these steps to search for unclaimed money:
- Visit Unclaimed.org and scroll down to select your state. Or visit the Unclaimed Money directory on USA.gov.
- Follow the instructions to search for unclaimed funds from your state.
- If you find a match, complete a claim form. Most states and provinces require a specific form to be completed.
- Follow the instructions to complete the specified form. You may need to supply additional documentation for verification.
- The claim form and ID are then mailed to the state for review. The state will respond to you directly after they have reviewed your submission and verified that you are the rightful owner.
- Most states send you an acknowledgment letter after receiving your claim. Claims processing timelines vary based on claim activity in your state.
HIP TIP: Unclaimed property is reported to the state in which the company or organization resides. It’s not uncommon to have unclaimed money in multiple states, especially if you have moved around to different locations!

I checked this link last year when you posted and was able to find …. $50,000! My grandmother had it left in her bank account when she passed away 5 years ago. The site only said “ more than $250” 😆. I check this every time you post this and find money for friends and family. I then tell them where and how to apply for the funds. I’ve found almost $10,000 in total!!!! For me, $0.00! I did this once at my family reunion’s banquet. I had people pull out their cell phones and look it up immediately. We had almost 25% of the room with missing, now found money.

Not through your link, but I did this last December and I found $1,000 I had from an old bank account from 20 years ago. I was working in tech at the time and the internet was just starting to do a bunch of online banks and I had gotten one, but I didn’t keep all the info and couldn’t remember which bank (a lot went out of business) and how to log in. They had it sitting there for me collecting interest.
