Looking for the best grocery store to buy eggs?
Like many of our readers have been doing, we constantly scour the aisles to find the best-priced eggs. Earlier this year, we saw the highest spike in egg prices due to a massive shortage of supplies, which you can read more about here.
Because of the high price of eggs, we even came up with a variety of egg substitutes to use in their place. Although these are great alternatives, sometimes you just want an egg!
Now, the price of eggs has finally started to decrease, and they are even approaching pre-pandemic prices in some areas. Keep reading for an update on the price of eggs at popular retailers, and bear in mind that these prices depend heavily upon your city and state.
Is buying eggs in bulk still a good idea?
When the price of eggs was at its peak, it seemed like your best bet was to purchase them in bulk whenever possible. In addition to paying less for each egg, you could also make fewer trips to the grocery store.
Now, it really depends on your location. In some cases, buying in bulk won’t save you much money, and it may even cost you a little bit more! Below, we’re showing the current price per egg to help you see the true cost, and which store may have the best option for your budget.

How can you tell how long your eggs stay fresh?
You may be on the fence about buying in bulk or prolonging the lifespan of your eggs in the fridge, especially when the expiration date has passed. One method our Hip team members have used is the float test!
Simply place your egg in a bowl of water; if it lays on its side on the bottom, it’s still fresh. If it’s standing straight up, it should be eaten soon and best served when hard-boiled. If it floats, it’s passed its prime and should be discarded. Our team has tried this even a week after the expiration date, and the eggs have always stayed fresh.
When in doubt, freeze your eggs!

For eggs, whisk them up and pour them into an easy-twist ice cube tray or muffin tin. You can season as desired now to avoid doing so later.
When you’re ready to defrost them, pop your eggs in the fridge for 24 hours before intended use. What an egg-cellent idea! 🥚

Check around your neighborhood to see if any of your neighbors sell eggs. I got lucky and my neighbor has chickens.

The cheapest eggs I’ve seen are the $2.60/dozen Great Value eggs at Walmart. That’s cheaper than my other nearby supermarkets. What’s funny is that Eggland’s Best are cheaper than Sunny Meadows eggs at Winn-Dixie. I always thought that Eggland’s Best was the one that was marketed as the premium brand. But, the price difference is nearly $1, even when looking at a dozen of larger sized Eggland’s Best eggs. But, then, they stock relatively few cartons of Eggland’s Best eggs. So, most people will end up paying the higher price, because the Sunny Meadows will be the cheapest thing available there. Now, I’m cheap. I would drive the half a mile, to the nearby Walmart, to save that extra $2.
Eggland’s Best are typically more expensive but their prices have remained the same while others have risen tremendously!

An 18 count of Good and Gather eggs at my local Target are $7.69! Costco had inexpensive ones last visit though.

While the posts states “large” and “extra large” eggs in the pricing, what I don’t find addressed is the fact that all “large” and “extra large” eggs aren’t created equal. When I bake, I have to physically look at the eggs I buy (not just for breakage) but for size consistency and the size I prefer. It’s wonky but a problem that impacts my baking. Am I the only one? So cheaper isn’t always better. If I’m just frying up an egg, no problems though. I shop around.

We went to Costco and got the biggest egg package which made them about $3 a dozen. As much as we eat of eggs they will keep.
Last week I purchased 24 count carton of large eggs at Sam’s Club in Indianapolis for $5.44. They had a limit of 2 cartons per purchase.
I live in the country in upstate NY.I can get farm fresh eggs for $3.
If you have a Natural Grocers nearby, their eggs are $1.99/dozen. I usually buy pasture raised/organic eggs and their prices have remained stable at $4.99/dozen.
I guess I lied. Went there today and the cheapest was $3.50/dozen and pasture raisedhas moved to $5.99/dozen. Still not horrible for super high quality eggs.
Our Whole Foods price for eggs is $3.29 for the 365 large eggs.
I often by eggs at a farm stand since I live in a rural area. At a glance, paying $4.50 a dozen doesn’t seem like a great deal, but the eggs are usually huge so it’s like getting a bonus half dozen. So, just a plug to check out any local farmers and consider size. 🙂

Reportedly, Jewel-Osco in Chicago will have a flash sale Sunday-Tuesday (Feb 26-28) with large eggs for $1.99 a dozen. I haven’t confirmed it yet, and not sure if other Albertsons stores might be doing that.

I paid $4.39 for 18 Good and Gather large eggs this past weekend. After 5% Redcard 22¢ each. I count that as a win. Plus free curbside pickup so I didn’t impulse shop.

What brand were the hard boiled ones in the picture at the top. I love bright yellow yolks. My local egg farmer is selling eggs for $7/dozen. Our stores were low on eggs so I bit the bullet and had them drop off a carton only to find small chicken eggs with really pale yolks. I was disappointed.

Last week, WalMart had a dozen large eggs for $2.87, so I added one to my pick up order. The next morning, they were out, so they subbed the 18 count for the same price, about 16¢ per egg. I felt like I hit the jackpot with that one.

I found Good&Gather large Grade A at Target here in Frisco, TX for $3.99. Lock&Lock makes a GREAT (sorry about the caps) egg container that helps your eggs stay fresher longer.
I have found the 60 count eggs at Walmart to be the cheapest in my area. I can usually go through all of them, or I can split them with my brother’s household if it might be too much. I keep some old 18 count cartons to repackage the eggs and get rid of the big box.

I second that! The eggs from a farmer down the road from us have more flavor than grocery store eggs, and the tiny bit extra I spend on them I make up for in gas savings since I can walk there. I know this isn’t possible for everyone, but I encourage everyone to give local farmers a try when they can.
The eggs at our local farmers were around 5 or 6 since 2016 and the past few years 7 to 8. Waaaayy too high to spend that kind of money on tiny 12 pack. Everything in our local farmers market is overly high priced.
My local farmer’s market had eggs for 99 cents a dozen last week. Egg prices are dropping.
