My 5-year-old Vizio Smart TV has not been kept updated and has fewer apps and streamlining services now than it did when new. Rather than buy a new TV, I purchased the Roku Ultra LT. I bought this model because it had a hardwired Ethernet connection, Airplay, and a headphone jack that the TV is missing. Tons of streaming services free and paid are available and there are some pretty good ones! I was surprised at how good the Roku channel is for free. One note on the Airplay. You need to download the Roku app, log on and select your device prior to using Airplay. This isn’t mentioned in the setup instructions but needs to be.

This is a nice streaming player. I used it to replace my earlier Roku 3, which died after about 6-7 years of use. The Roku Ultra LT 2019 has a great remote control, which can turn the TV on and off, and control the TV volume (as well as the mute capability). It was very easy to set up, needing only my WiFi password. You can skip the option to enter credit card information (for when you wish to purchase viewing opportunities over your streaming player). It is also nice in that it seems to “shut itself off” whereas my previous Roku 3 remained on constantly.

Can I ask a “Roku for Dummies” question? Do you only need to buy this device, plug it to the tv and connect to internet and you have the channels? Or do you pay a subscription? Do you get the main tv channels?

It’s just like a hub and a way to make a dumb TV… smart. You still need to have a Netflix,Hulu, D+, etc account. No free TV. If you have spectrum, you can download the spectrum app and have TV run through the roku without an actual spectrum cable box.

        Thank you so much!

There are free channels. Eg. The Roku Channel app has several channels that are free.

Is there a difference between having a Roku or a Fire Stick ? A non-smart TV wouldnt need both right ? From what i see they both do the exact same thing or am i completely wrong. I have a Fire Stick i haven’t set up on one of the TVs we have that isnt a smart TV. No need to get this too…right ?? 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’ve had both and they do the same thing. It’s usually just the interface a person prefers. You only need to pick one, kerRI!

There are some apps that aren’t available on both. We have Spectrum for our tv provider and last I knew the fire stick doesn’t have that app so we went with Roku.

      Thank you both 😊

I bought a roku and had to return it after I found out it no longer supports YouTube Tv. I had to get a Firestick. So it really depends on what apps and streaming services you have:
