Sensitive to peppermint? You can also use Plant Therapy’s lavender essential oil, which is another great natural relief aid for itching and bug bites.

My Hip sidekick, Lina, came up with the original recipe for this whipped cooling sunburn lotion. Here’s what she had to say about it:
“This whipped cooling lotion is so soothing and moisturizing. I love incorporating coconut oil into my skin care routine and this is a fun and easy way to do it . Plus, the Plant Therapy essential oil smells soooooo amazing!” – Lina
This cooling lotion is the easiest way to get relief 🙌🧊
In addition to making a great moisturizer, this cooling sunburn lotion is also beneficial in that it provides some natural relief from itching due to bug bites, poison ivy, and hives.
As a bonus, you can also opt to add other essential oils (like lavender, as mentioned above), your favorite essential oil scent, or even none at all if you’re overly sensitive to them. That’s what I love about this recipe – you can totally customize this lotion based on your preferences and create a scent using any of Plant Therapy’s amazing options!
Enjoy, friends!
*This recipe is for external use only and should not be applied near the eyes or to your face. Please consult your pediatrician before using it on children.
This is my favorite DEET-free bug repellent – it’s so safe, it’s even EDIBLE! 😱
Lina, this is awesome!
Can you please come up with a homemade hair conditioner using coconut oil??
Great idea! Thanks for the request, Nancy! I have passed this along to the team!
I just whipped this up! Thank you so much!! I have eleventy-billion bug bites and this is just what I needed!
You’re welcome, Lisa! Hope this is helpful!
This looks delicious ๐ ๐ will definitely give it a try.
Awesome, Dee! Just don’t eat it! It does smell delicious though! haha
I wonder how natural aloe from a plant would work? I have a large aloe plant that I need to start using.
We grew up using natural aloe for our burns. If we got a sunburn, we would pick off the plant and rub it on. Worked great – I’m thinking you could use it for this recipe!
Thank you!
Natural Aloe Vera works wonders on sunburns. However, it doesnโt contain preservatives so it turns rancid after a couple of days.
I keep an aloe plant in the house for sunburns. Just cut off a piece of the plant and cut it open. Smear on the aloe and itโs a natural instant cure!
What is the best coconut oil to use? I’m overwhelmed by choices. Lol
Hey, crystal-5! Unrefined coconut oil is best for skincare because it contains all the naturally occurring phytonutrients and polyphenols (unlike refined coconut oil which is more highly processed). Here’s the one I recommended in the post that I really like.
Unfortunately I can’t get the one suggested at Target, can you suggest one from Walmart, my Target does not carry and it can’t be shipped to my zip code?
Found it at Walmart, slightly different jar but all the right writing.
Awesome, so glad you found one, Crystal! Enjoy!
Can i do this without the essential oils and still have good results?
Deanne, I haven’t made it without essential oils as I really love the fresh peppermint smell, however, you’ll still get the same whipped effect without the essential oils. Hope you enjoy!
Will this work for sunburn?
This can definitely help soothe sunburn, Jamie. I always recommend consulting with a doctor first when it comes to taking care of your skin though. I hope you enjoy!
Loved this. I love watching your daughter in the videos too. She is so cute and energetic! Definitely going to make this lotion.
Aw, thank you so much, Asha! I’ll be sure to tell her she’s got a fan! Enjoy the lotion and have a great weekend!
Sara – where did you get the container that you are storing the cream?
Hey MacKenzie! It’s from IKEA’s 365+ Series. You purchase the glass containers and the bamboo lids separately. I wouldn’t say it’s ideal for this recipe, but it’s what I had on hand. They’re great for food storage though!
Hi! How do we store this? Can it last for months?
Hi Patricia! If you store it at 75 degrees or lower it should last for quite a while. Hope this helps!
Don’t forget to add in some dried plantain leaves! Not the banana, the plant most people think of as a weed ๐
Just a heads up, lots of aloe vera gel is mainly alcohol, which doesn’t really help as much as a pure aloe gel would. It tends to dry skin out, and make it harder for your skin to heal. Most stores have pure aloe without the alcohol for the same price.
Otherwise, this sounds like a great idea!
We use the aloe Vera gel (or the plant) for sunburns or other burns , doesnโt hurt to use it, so as many times as you can apply per day is good, I got a bad burn in my arm, the gel from the plant kept me from having a scar
We just put aloe on alone. Just keeping it simple and effective.
I have a couple of aloe plants and use the leaves for various purposes, it has helped my family with dry skin, sunburn and including eczema as well. I always let the aloin drain from the leaf before use, cut it up an put it in the freezer so when applied to the skin is cold and handy. Thanks for the recipe I will definitely try it out!
How would you store this? Would it need a glass jar?
Hey Peaches! You can use any container or jar however glass is best. ๐
