Make Your Counters Sparkle With DIY Natural Granite & Quartz Cleaner!
Did you know that you can easily make your own granite countertop cleaner?!
Mixing up this easy granite cleaner using a simple combination of dish soap, isopropyl alcohol, water, and essential oils will make your kitchen counters shine! A friend recently told me about making this natural recipe based off of BobVila.com and I had to try it out for myself.
This granite countertop cleaner spray works effectively for basic clean-up throughout the day. I love that it’s not greasy at all and does a great job of picking up big and small messes. The small amount of dish soap is a great degreaser while the rubbing alcohol makes everything sparkle and also acts as a mild disinfectant!
While I technically have quartz counters in my kitchen, I’ve found this granite cleaner to be just as effective on them. This DIY cleaner is gentle enough to be used on quartz or granite countertops, as well as other surfaces like stainless steel appliances.
This spray isn’t limited to the kitchen! I also keep a bottle in the bathroom for quick clean-ups too on our granite counters in the bathroom.
This recipe is a natural all-purpose granite cleaner that’s also money-saving!
I spent about $1 on my batch while typical store-bought granite cleaners can range between $6-$11 a bottle! This is a super easy way to make your own and save at the same time.

Tips for making DIY granite countertop cleaner:
- The 15 drops of essential oils are optional here, however, they add such a pleasing natural scent! I used a combination of lavender essential oil, eucalyptus, and also a couple of drops of tea tree oil for its anti-microbial properties.
- For the dish soap, you can use whichever liquid dish soap you prefer. Castile soap is a great option because it’s all-natural and biodegradable.
- Will this DIY granite spray kill coronavirus? In short, no because it’s diluted. According to UCHealth.org, “Isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol with at least 70 percent alcohol – undiluted – will kill coronavirus on surfaces in about 30 seconds.” I still feel like this spray is valuable for basic clean ups!

It’s also really effective to pair this DIY granite countertop cleaner with microfiber cloths. I have a collection of cleaning cloths of various brands, and my favorite one right now is this streak-free Zap cloth. It’s great for making surfaces clean and shiny!
Is it 1 1/2 Cups of water?
Yes thanks! Oops we’ll fix the “cups” in there.
What if you skipped the water and made it undiluted? Corona killer? Or is it too harsh on granite?
Ya so according to the cdc “Solutions of 70% alcohol should be left on surfaces for 30 seconds (including cellphones) to ensure they will kill viruses.”
Unsure about the granite question but sounds like it does kill the virus.
thanks for the reminder about letting it sit for 30 seconds. i always wipe my phone with disinfecting wipes, and it evaporates so fast, i wonder if it does anything.
same with hand sanitizer. if i use that to wipe over my phone or computer keyboard, i wonder if it dries up too fast to sanitize it.
This recipe, as is, won’t kill coronavirus. If you have 70% rubbing alcohol, and you want it to kill the coronavirus, it would be best to leave it undiluted, with no added water, as it would take some extremely precise calculations to make sure that you have the proper percentage of alcohol. If you are using 91% alcohol, you would want to dilute it with approximately 1/4 water/dish soap/essential oils so that it can penetrate the virus’s envelope. If you use the full percentage, it will dry up and harden the envelope, sort of like freeze-drying the virus for later use. You don’t want that. The easiest way to do this is to to put 2-3 drops of dish soap and 3 drops of essential oil into a measuring cup, and fill the measuring cup to the 1/4 cup mark with water. Then continue to fill the measuring cup with 91% alcohol to the 1 cup mark. This will get you into the coronavirus killer range. I hope that made sense!
Thanks for the info! Very helpful.
Do you use regular tap water?
Yes I do. You can use distilled if you wanted or if you think it won’t get used up for awhile.
Love posts like this—thank you! 🙂
Rubbing alcohol or strong citrus like vinegar or lemon can strip off the polish from granite countertop.
Bob Vila spells his name with one ‘L.’ small typo in the hyperlink.
good grief. self righteous people.
it has nothing to do with ‘self-righteousness.’ if later, someone wanted to put his name it in “search” bar on H2S and so they could re-read this recipe to make it later, then it wouldn’t come up in the search if H2S had a typo. OR, if a person remembered it as having 2 L’s, and then they wanted to go to Vila’s own website, they wouldn’t be able to google it by using the spelling provided here.
if a typo is caught early on in the day, it can make it easier for people later, how is that self-righteous?
Thanks! fixed. 🙂
Been using this for years! Love it
yay – glad to hear that! Thanks for sharing!
Does this work on marble floors?
I looked up a few sources online that say yes if they are sealed, but would encourage you to do some research also to be sure. Thanks!
Can’t buy rubbing alcohol in south Jersey. For some reason, it’s rarely stocked. I’ve checked Wegmans, Target, RiteAid, ShopRite, Dollar Tree, BJ’s, Costco, Walmart, CVS and Walgreens.
Oh darn. I hope you’re able to find some soon or consider grabbing some online. I’ve linked some from walmart.com in the post. Hope that helps!
Try to go to your dollar tree on the days they restock the store. Just ask anyone working at the dollar store. That’s how I was able to buy some! They have been getting them again since last week. So you should check!
This is cool. I have been using the target brand Method daily granite cleaner that has a hint of apple scent, love the smell, does shine my counters and is relatively cheap. Good to know there are other options.
Oh thanks for sharing!
I use method too, it’s the only thing that works for my counters, including this recipe which streaks. I have always used apple, but recently switched to the citrus refill bottle at Target, I love it even more.
I made this yesterday and am really enjoying it! It shines the countertop up nicely, smells divine and dries fast! Thank you!
