Make DIY Stove Top Potpourri Christmas Jar Gifts
Here’s a fun way to spread holiday cheer by making DIY Christmas stove top potpourri jar gifts!
Ready to make your home smell like Christmas for the holidays?
Stove top simmering scents are such a cozy way to incorporate scents naturally in your home by heating the ingredients in a pot on the stove. If you have citrus that is starting to turn, this is a smart idea to utilize them too.
Today I’m sharing how you can make this on the stove for your home, and I’m also sharing how to compile DIY stove top potpourri Christmas jar gifts to make for neighbors, family, or friends for the holidays! I even designed these FREE printable gift tags for you to print and tie to your jars!
There are numerous fresh fruit and herb combinations to try, but today I am specifically sharing a beautiful Christmas scent featuring orange, rosemary, cinnamon, clove, and star anise.
All you have to do is slice the orange, place all the ingredients in a medium-sized pot on the stove with 4-6 cups of water, and let it simmer (not boil) for a few hours and up to a day with the lid off. It will smell so inviting and cozy once warmed up. I love the spicy and sweet aroma of cinnamon and citrus.
When you are making a Christmas simmer pot at home for yourself, feel free to improvise and throw in apple slices, pears, and other desired add-ins like ginger or vanilla. This is so versatile and can be changed up according to what you have on hand. I have a large rosemary bush at home, so I love utilizing that in simmer scents!
Consider making beautiful homemade gifts with Christmas stove top potpourri!
We have actually shared this exact simmer pot recipe years ago, but today I’m excited to reshare it as a cute gift idea. I just love mason jar gifts, and here’s an easy one that is so festive for Christmas!
Simply place ingredients into a jar and attach a gift tag to the outside. I think it looks so beautiful and these are always well-received as a thoughtful gift.
Tips for making DIY Stove Top Potpourri Christmas Jar Gifts:
- I used wide mouth 16 oz mason jars and that seemed to be the right size for a batch of simmer pot potpourri. If you wanted to create bags instead, consider using clear cellophane treat bags!
- I recommend printing the gift tags on card stock paper so they will be sturdy and won’t easily rip or tear.
- Some people enjoy stove top scents using their slow cooker on low. I have not tried it, but it seems like another popular method if you don’t want to use the kitchen stove.
- If you want to compile your jars a couple of days ahead of time, just store them in the fridge for freshness.
- If you are buying ingredients in the grocery store, look for the more inexpensive brands sold in the packets rather than spice jars. In my store, there is a Hispanic foods section with inexpensive packets of cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and anise.

Sounds like a wonderful idea, especially when family comes over for the holidays, but with the price of natural gas going up I don’t think I’d let this just simmer for hours.. My bills are already high enough.
use a chocolate fondue pot with tealight
I’ve used my mini crockpot and it worked great. Might be able to use the crockpot liners as well for easier clean up,
Such a nice idea, but I can’t get the print button to work, it just shoots me back to the top of the post.
DARN! The print option is working for me. Maybe try once more in a different browser. I had success using Chrome. Hoping that helps!
Tried Chrome and Duck Duck Go. Won’t print. Takes me to the top of the page.
SO sorry for the issues. I still find the print option to work for me. Maybe try using Ctrl + P to see if the print feature will pop up for you that way. Hoping that does the trick! 🤞❤️
Yup print doesn’t work even in chrome
Happens to me too
SO sorry, Mary. Have you been able to try a different browser? I was able to get it to print in the Chrome browser. Hoping that works for you too! 💖
How long will it last before the cranberries spoil? How long will the recipient have before they need to use it?
We were gifted one of these and put it in the freezer and forgot about it for a year and it was still good.
It would be fine for a few days or longer in the fridge. Or like someone suggested they could freeze it. I have seen similar versions using dried orange slices and dried cranberries you could experiment with if not wanting to use fresh.
How many jars does that recipe make?
One jar. Multiply as needed for more.
You can get a great price on cloves and cinnamon sticks at Costco.
Thanks for sharing! Will have to look!
Thanks for this tip, Janet. I was able to find both at Costco and saved quite a bit!
Where is the blue pot from? It’s so pretty.
Oh thaanks! It is from the recent Fall FabFitFun box. The brand is called Golden Rabbit, and I agree it’s so pretty 😍 and functional.
The gift tag doesn’t state to slice the orange, I’m hoping people would assume they need to do so.
Ya and it would work either way. You could tell them or write it in 🙂
Such a stunning setup! I had never used potpourri myself until I got my carpets cleaned the other day. Even though I love a clean smell, I was needing more of a holiday aroma for a dinner party that night. Luckily I had some cinnamon on hand and was able to test out your recipe! It was absolutely divine, and now I’m even more excited to gift them as neighbor gifts this year!
So glad to hear you enjoyed this recipe, Olivia! Hoping your neighbors love them too! 🎄❤️
Could you swap rosemary sprigs for pine during Christmas time?
