Box of Sunshine diy gift idea

Know someone who could use a little extra encouragement?

Consider gifting a fun box of sunshine to cheer them up! ☀️ This DIY surprise gift box is easy to make and budget-friendly, too. We’ve even designed a cheerful FREE printable card in a couple of sizes that you can include with your gift.

If you have someone in your life that has experienced a recent loss, a box of sunshine could also be a thoughtful sympathy or bereavement gift to compile and personalize for them. Sometimes just knowing that someone is thinking of you can be of great comfort.

I actually once did this for a friend and dropped it off at her door, and she loved it so much. I could tell it meant a lot.

box of sunshine gift items

This box of sunshine project could not be easier and it is so fun to do!

Simply put together a fun grouping of yellow or brightly colored goodies and surprise a friend, family member, neighbor, or teacher – anyone you think needs some joy and kindness. 😀 These days a little extra kindness goes a long way. 💛

If you have a child in college this would be a fun idea to compile and send off to them! As far as the box goes, you could maybe repurpose one from a subscription box or decorate a shipping box.

dollar tree gift fillers

The best part? You can budget for your small gifts and completely customize your DIY surprise gift box for your recipient. I spotted a ton of cute “yellow” themed goodies at Dollar Tree and Walmart to fill my box and keep it within my budget!

You can also check out your favorite stores like Target, Big Lots, and TJ Maxx for some fun finds as well.

Very cute! We did something similar for a co-worker when she got a new job, except it was all blue things with a note that said “We will be blue without you!”

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Love this! Thank you for the ideas. Gonna make one for my 10 year old daughter to cheer her up. We are in NY so there will be no graduation ceremony, no dance, no senior trip due to covid. Where did you buy the straw cup?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh I am sorry that is happening. I think that cup was an older Walmart find 💕

      • Maria

Thank you and thank you for responding. The cup is so cute!!@

This is such a great idea! I have sent out some C. Krueger cookie sets, but they are $8 for two cookies. While they were well received & yummy, I can stretch $8 at the Dollar Tree or clearance at Walmart! I honestly hope this catches on and we can do something like this for each other past this crazy virus time 💙💙

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Aw yes thanks Bree, such a nice sentiment! Thanks for stopping by!

These are so fun to put together. I sent one to my son during his freshman year of college when he had the winter middle-of-the-school -year blues and was a little homesick. The hunt for yellow things for an 18 year old male was challenging but I found guitar picks, a carabiner, a car cleaning cloth, a smiley face ball, a shower mitt, lip balm and more, all in shades of yellow. Oh, and of course lots of candy & snacks in yellow wrappers! I even found a card with a big smiling sun on the front, and a bottle of essential oil called “sunshine” for his dorm room diffuser. It was a blast putting it together and it lifted his spirits!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Wow! What a great mom! I love these ideas – thanks for sharing 😍❤️👏

  10. Sandra

I love those stickers, where did you find them?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh they were from Dollar Tree a couple years ago. Thanks Sandra!

  11. Gina

This is going to be the perfect pick me up for my friend, Katherine. Her dad was just diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and her 1st baby is due in 2 weeks. You can imagine she is in shock. I can’t wait to give her a little sunshine just to brighten her recently dark days. Thanks for the great idea!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

Oh man that sounds rough. Yes, she will love this! You are a very thoughtful friend! Great idea Gina <3
