Why iron when you can spray the wrinkles away?!
If you’re like me and dislike ironing, try spraying your cotton clothes and bed sheets with a little wrinkle-release spray to smooth out wrinkles quickly. Even better, you can easily DIY your own spray and not buy a separate spray product such as Downy Wrinkle Release.
Water and a little fabric softener make a great wrinkle-release spray!
I initially tested this whole idea out on my sheets and it worked great! One day I was writing up a product review about my favorite sheets from Costco, and was hoping to get nice photos of them, except they looked wrinkled.
I honestly considered ironing them, but then decided to test out a hack I’ve seen on Instagram before by mixing fabric softener and water in an empty water bottle. After spraying and smoothing them out with my hand, it relaxed the fibers and the heavy wrinkles disappeared nicely!
I used my favorite Mrs. Meyers fabric softener in lavender scent, so my sheets smelled amazing. Plus, I loved that I mixed it up on the fly without buying a separate product!
Tips for making DIY wrinkle release spray:
- You can use any empty spray bottle. I love using glass spray bottles to mix up various homemade cleaning recipes. Mine is from Grove Collaborative, and I also have these glass ones from Amazon.com.
- If you’re planning to keep your bottle of wrinkle release spray, I would use distilled water to keep it from growing mold or bacteria.
- Want a more natural solution? Try adding 1 cup white vinegar plus 1 cup distilled water into a water bottle with a few drops of essential oils for scent. According to DIYNatural.com, vinegar is also a great wrinkle release agent!

This may not yield results as perfect as using an actual iron, however, it’s a great alternative to dragging out the ironing board or using a steamer. If you’re ever in a pinch and want to smooth out your shirt effortlessly, I support this method. If you already buy wrinkle release spray this method could be a great way to start making your own.

I’ve done this for years. I always take a spray bottle on vacation for this very reason. I don’t add anything but use just water from the tap. Put clothing on hanger and it works great every time!
