I’m a Decorative Pillow Maximalist! How Extreme Is Your Pillow Obsession?
We recently got a new bed, which meant we needed new everything when it came to bedding. I’m going to just admit it now, guys. At first, I thought my husband was crazy for thinking that I’m obsessed with pillows, but as it turns out, I’m a crazy pillow person. It’s true. I just don’t think you can have enough pillows…like, ever! I kept ordering pillows for our bed, and after realizing I spent literally hundreds of dollars, I had to ask myself, “Is anyone else overly-obsessed with pillows like me?!” It really got me thinking.
I’ve learned there’s no limit to my love for pillows, but you may not love being engulfed by pillows while you sleep. So I’m here to help you find out just how many pillows will work for your bed and the type of pillow person you really are.
So, which one are you?
1. The pillow minimalist
I’m a minimalist in many ways. I like to think I was Marie Kondo before there was actually ever a Marie Kondo. 😉 However, pillows bring me joy, so I can definitely admit that less is not more (for me) when it comes to pillows.
If you’re a minimalist pillow lover, you love just the essentials. You have one great sleeping pillow and maybe – if you’re feeling wild – you have a decorative throw pillow in the middle of your bed to pull your room together. Out of all the personalities, you’re likely to spend the least amount of money and time making and unmaking your bed, so kudos to you!
2. The pillow whisperer
My husband is secretly the pillow whisperer, but he still has to put up with my pillow obsession. Lucky for him, he doesn’t normally make our bed since he leaves before me, so he’s okay with living outside of his pillow comfort zone.
If you’re like my husband, you love a little more than just the one pillow you sleep on. Pillow whisperers have a practical amount of pillows and will most likely use all of them with a purpose. You might enjoy a decorative throw pillow in addition to a couple standard pillows, great for sitting up while reading a book in bed or to add some extra decoration after the bed is made.
3. The pillow enthusiast
I was once this person. I used to know my limits regarding how many pillows I needed. But then I’d go to Target and see their new Opalhouse pillows… or step into Pottery Barn and catch a really good bedding sale. Who could possibly resist them all?
If you’re a pillow enthusiast, you love pillows, but only to a point. You enjoy decking out your bed with fluffy pillows and different textures – and your bed is the statement piece upon walking into your room. You have only the pillows which bring you joy, and not one extra pillow more.
4. The pillow maximalist
This is me, friends. I’m a crazy pillow person, but to be honest, I’m okay with it. Marie Kondo might not be okay with it, but I am!
The Maximalist has no limits regarding how many pillows will decorate their bed. For some of you, you may not even be able to sit or lay on your bed without removing half the pillows first. 😂 You most likely have different throw pillows for each holiday to match all your seasonal decor perfectly. You can’t resist that cute bunny pillow for Easter at Pottery Barn, and you always get out those matching flannel Christmas sheets that go with your red pillows in November. And let’s not even talk about how long it would take to wash your bed!
If you’re a maximalist, it’s okay. I’m here for you, and we’re all in this together! 🙌

I am a pillow whisperer. It is quick and easy in am. I do however love pillows and change them with seasons and holidays.
How fun! Thanks for sharing with us, Ann! I love pillows too and hadn’t yet thought of changing them up throughout the year!
It cracks me up to see categories for this! I am a whisperer, my husband would be a minimalist but I force him into whisperer. Truly, I think he was always a whisperer and didn’t realize it while living alone – he’d put two pillows on the bed but use them both lol. My mom and grandma were enthusiasts with all of the matching pillows from their bedding sets!
This is such a fun site, but how will I resist buying things when I don’t have a house yet… haha!
LOL! My hubby is a minimalist too! Thanks a bunch for stopping by to leave a sweet comment! SO glad you are enjoying the new site!
This made me laugh, because I saw that picture and instantly thought of my son! He is 3 and definitely a pillow maximalist! He does whatever he can to collect all of the pillows from all over the house and pile them onto his little twin bed. And I am a pillow enthusiast so there are definitely plenty for him to collect, lol! Our 1 year old is a pillow portable-ist, as long as he has one to carry around the house with him he is good! Lol! Hubby is a pillow minimalist for sure and thinks we are all so silly with our love of pillows.
Aww, too cute! Thanks for sharing your love of pillows with us!
What is the difference between a sleeping pillow and a standard pillow?
Hi Sara! The Standard pillow is a smaller size than the sleeping pillow. When paired together as shown above, it can provide a pretty, tiered look. With a larger bed, the standard pillow would serve as a more decorative pillow. Hope that helps!
The more the better! Seems like I buy a pillow everytime I go anywhere. My family likes to make me crazy by not respecting the layout of the pillows. One evening I came home to find every pillow in the house stacked on the dining room table. Of course I about died!!!! LOL!!!
LOL! Too funny! I love pillows too! My hubby thinks we have too many for our couches, but I sure love them!
This post didn’t give examples for a full size bed.
This post also leaves out another type: the type that doesn’t have any decorative pillows. I think decorative pillows are stupid. They serve no practical purpose and are just going to be thrown on the floor when you get in bed.
I have two standard pillows. One is for at night when I am entirely on the bed lying lengthwise. The other is for during the day when I sometimes lie on my bed with my legs hanging over the side. I buy the 2pk of standard memory foam cluster pillows for $9.99 from Costco about once every two years. Two standard pillows are all that should be necessary for one person.
Thanks for the feedback! The beds with double pillows can be examples for any bed size from full to a California King. Hope that helps!
Are there categories for dogs? My dog loves pillows! He generally doesn’t climb on the pillows if they are propped up, but if one is lying flat he will be lying on it. Sometimes if there are multiple pillows piled on, he climbs up on them king of the mountain style. Or if one is on the floor he gets really comfortable on top of it.
Aww, Too cute! I think pets can have a pillow preference too! My cat loves a large squishy pillow! She will claim it as her bed! Thanks for sharing with us, Melissa! Happy to hear about your dog’s love of pillows!
