Messy Kids Closet? Check Out These Clever Organization Tips
It takes a village.
Both when raising a child and corralling their closet! Kids accumulate so many clothes, shoes, and accessories, so if you’re trying to rearrange the space that stores all of those belongings, check out these fun and easy DIY tips and ideas to organize kids closets into an organizational dream.
1. Pegboard wall
Pegboard is SO versatile! Check out this closet organization idea from Slippers By Day that uses a pegboard sheet as the back wall of a boy’s closet.
2. Bookshelf doors from pantry shelving
There are so many great ways to optimize vertical storage on closet doors. This bookshelf door idea can even be used for more than just reading materials.
3. Shoe organizer hack
A shoe organizer goes above and beyond just shoes! Use it to store blankets and other baby necessities, or corral toys and stuffed animals like they do over at Organized Mom!
4. Laundry basket hacks
If your house ends up with kid stuff everywhere outside of their closet, give this hanging laundry basket idea a try. Walk around the house with a basket to pick up miscellaneous items and have a designated area for pick up. Each person is then responsible for transporting their stuff back to where it belongs!
Another laundry basket idea is to separate clothes by “dirty” and “outgrown” right inside the closet. This is pure genius, especially in those early months when babies are growing SO fast!
5. Labeled bins
Keeping labeled closet bins is a great way to help kids be in charge of cleanup in their own rooms. If they’re too young to read, try adding a picture of the item along with the words on the label.
6. Floating bookshelves
Using floating bookshelves to display your child’s favorite books is an easy and eye-catching way to organize and decorate at the same time! Plus, they sit nearly flush against the wall so they take up very little room. Love it!
7. LEGO organization
The pain of stepping on a rogue LEGO is enough for anyone to want to get a handle on organizing all the tiny pieces! This organization tip from My 4 Misters and Their Sister sorts LEGO components into stackable totes to make building (and tear down) much more streamlined.
And then as far as the LEGO building manuals go, organize the pages into 3-ring binders to keep them easily accessible and safe from wear and tear. This is 100% GENIUS!
8. Foam days-of-the-week separators
Simple foam squares work well for separating hangers in your closet. For the kiddos, you can organize by age sizing for easy reference!

These are such wonderful ideas – and I can even use some for my now 17 year old and 45 year old husband 😁😂
LOL! Glad these will be helpful, Suszy! I’m taking note of these tips too! We have some closets that need help for sure!
I use the shoe organizer to keep Barbies in!! My daughter picks them all up on her own and can easily find the one she wants to play with.
What a great idea, Carey! Thanks for sharing with us! I should have used that for my daughter’s barbies when she was little!
