How often do you clean your shower curtain?

Most experts advise that you wash your shower curtain and liner about once per month (and, minimally, every three months). Mildew and grime can build up eventually from all the moisture plus soap and become…well – yucky!

Luckily, cleaning shower curtains and liners is easy, so don’t toss them! Follow our how-to and easily clean your shower curtain and liner (the hardest part is taking off and on all those tiny shower hooks).

How to wash your shower curtain and liner

You can wash most fabric shower curtains and plastic or polyester shower liners right in the washing machine! Here’s how:

  • Place shower curtain and liner in the washing machine.
  • Throw in a couple of bath towels (they will actually help wash the liner)!
  • Add 1/2 cup of baking soda with your detergent to your warm water wash cycle.
  • Add 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar to the rinse cycle.
  • Hang to let dry.

Hip Tip: If your liner is REALLY moldy, consider washing it by itself with detergent and 1/2 cup liquid bleach.

How to keep your shower curtains cleaner longer:

  • Promote fast drying. Stretch out the curtain after a shower, shake it, and allow it to completely dry out between showers. Place it on the outside of the tub, and turn on the bathroom fan to ventilate air.
  • Kill mold with vinegar. Make a homemade shower cleaner using half water and half vinegar (with a few drops of lemon essential oil to combat the vinegar smell). After showers, spray down the liner with the cleaner and stretch out the curtain to air dry well.

We switched to this Liba PEVA Antimicrobial PVC Free Shower Curtain Liner via Amazon, and we haven’t had any mold issues we’ve seen with the plastic liners. It’s easy to just throw in the wash, and it really does stay very clean. At just $8.99, it’s very affordable, too!

I do like your shower curtain. Are there any other colors available? I know you said the color you have isn’t available anymore but I do like that one. When I clicked on the link it just took me to the Kohl’s website it didn’t take me to the one that is similar to yours.

Would this even work with a front load washing machine? It locks until its done. I can’t stop it to add something to the rinse cycle. Do you add the baking soda to the detergent dispenser or to the drum?

I keep my bathroom exhaust fan on 24/7/365. My bathroom can get muggy really quickly. The sweltering humidity outside would quickly make its way inside if I didn’t keep it on. One thing I find interesting is that I can hear any conversations going on outside when I am in my bathroom. I also hear the birds that nest in the exhaust fan vent.

Yes exactly I add baking soda to drum and vinegar to fabric softener spot to rinse if using. Hope that helps!

There are three options (clear, frosted, cloth) of the liner. Would all three be okay to wash in the washer? My thought is a no-no for especially the clear one. Thoughts? Thanks

You can wash the clear ones in the washer. I have read that there’s no need for it to go in the spin cycle though, so maybe just take out and dry. Hope that helps!

I washed my liner like you did, and now the magnets don’t stick to the side of the tub. Its annoying & I threw it out. so much for that.
