More Organizing Tips & Ideas

We all have a dark and dirty little secret in our kitchens.

Yes, I’m talking about that junk drawer! I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who doesn’t have one of these, and if you don’t, kudos to you! (I’d love to hear your secret to avoid having one!) For the rest of us though, we need an easy solution to organize the mess of miscellaneous odds and ends, which is why I’m going to walk you through how to get it all organized in just under 5 minutes.

Please note that since I have purchased my organizers, Target has updated the color of their product to a dark gray rubber. Also, if you can’t find them at Target you can check out your local TJMaxx and scoop some up!

1. Take everything out.

The first thing you’re going to do is take everything out of your drawer. You can’t get organized until you start fresh!

2. Put everything into groups.

organized piles of odd and end miscellaneous things in groups

AHH! Don’t you already feel better looking at this? 😍 I know I do! This is the most important part of working your way to a more functional junk drawer. When taking everything out, make sure you group similar things together as I did here.

Hip Tip: Chances are you have a bunch of pens and pencils in your drawer as I did. Make sure you grab a scrap piece of paper and quickly test each pen and marker. Then toss out the ones that no longer work and keep the ones that do! This would even be a great opportunity to sharpen all your good pencils.

3. Analyze what you are organizing.

Next, you’ll want to analyze everything you’re keeping so you can decide how many organizers you will need. Make sure to also measure inside of your drawer so you know that all the containers will fit.

As you can see, the main groups I have are writing tools, command hooks and adhesives, and tons of batteries (the perk of having kids in the electronic age 😏). Everyone’s junk drawer stuff will vary, so that’s why I love these organizers so much. They come in 3 different sizes and they’re not made to fit any particular object, so they are completely versatile for your needs.

Another reason I chose these is that they have grips on the bottoms which really do make ALL the difference. I tried another set of organizers before, but they slid everywhere when opening and closing the drawer. Over time, they caused more of a hassle than a solution.

4. Put everything in your organizers.

Now you’re ready to start putting everything into your bins and containers. Everything should have its own place and be easily accessible so when you need it you aren’t having to shuffle around in your drawer.

Hip Tip: Don’t forget to clean your drawer before putting everything back in! It’s always best to start with a totally fresh and clean slate. 🙌

5. Put everything back in your drawer.

This is the most rewarding part. Seeing everything in its place is wonderful – and now you don’t have to be so embarrassed opening it up in front of someone. LOL!

I used small saucers that I already had to organize small items like paper clips, small Post-its, and clips. I grabbed a piece of command velcro, cut it into squares, and stuck it to the bottom of the saucers and inside my drawer so that they won’t move around. (I can’t recall where my bowls came from, but any small condiment bowls would work perfectly). I would have also bought an additional organizer for smaller tools like Allen wrenches, miscellaneous keys, and gum, but I used my son’s handmade clay saucer for a little personal touch and stuck a piece of velcro on the bottom.

6. Take a minute to appreciate your job well done.

Wow! 👏 Look at what a difference that is! Looking at the before, it’s hard to believe that it really wasn’t that much stuff once it’s all organized!

I loved these so much, I made sure to scoop up some extra containers for my bathroom drawer. See what I mean? They’re super versatile, and I love the new gray color of the container bottoms!

We have these in the teal and some more recent ones in the gray for bathroom and kitchen drawers as well and they are amazing. When your needs change, you can re-arrange and repurpose them over and over again. Totally worth the money, we’ve used them in three different houses and countless drawers.

    • Chelsey (Hip Sidekick)

I totally agree Sophie! It’s great to find something that you can repurpose throughout your home!

Go through your food storage containers. You’re bound to find ones missing lids that can be used to organize junk drawers.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

You’re right! I have a few without a matching lid! Thanks for the suggestion!

    • Jean

Great idea. Thanks. And thanks Hip2Save for the tip about the command velcro. I never heard of it!!

      • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

You’re very welcome, Jean! I’m loving that tip too!
