Hobby Lobby has announced in a press release that it will be raising its minimum wage for full-time employees to $18.50/hour beginning January 1, 2022. The retailer currently operates 956 retail stores stocked with arts & craft supplies, home accents, seasonal products, and more.

In 2009, the retailer was one of the first to establish a nationwide minimum hourly wage significantly above the federal minimum wage, and it has been steadily raising its minimum wage ever since – twelve times in the past thirteen years.

In 2014, Hobby Lobby raised its full-time minimum hourly wage to $15, years before it finally caught on and became a trend with other retailers.

“We have a long track record of taking care of our employees. In 1998, we made the decision to close our stores on Sundays, and at 8:00 p.m. the rest of the week, to provide employees time for rest, family, and worship. We’ve also worked hard over the years to provide the best pay and benefits in retail, which has allowed us to attract and retain an outstanding group of associates to serve our devoted customers.” – David Green, Hobby Lobby founder and CEO

They need to raise it to a livable wage.

    • Doug

Hard to do with inflation at all time high.

      • TigerTim

        Thanks to the Pres. ;0(

        • laura-24

Grow up. This is long over due.

          • Amber

            The inflation or the raise?

        • Denise Myers

          100% tigertim.

        • Ashley

Let’s not talk politics here, this is my safe place.

          • Sara

That’s what people who can’t defend their position say.

            • A

              Lol so true.

            • amy

No. It’s people who can only defend one person that think this way.

people are always upset with change, but it happens. with the ongoing consumer needs, prices will rise. we have seen a lot more of consumption due to cv. the president is not your fighting point.

it is companies, greed and things beyond comprehension of someone that thinks that a president is the say all be all.

if you are so upset with what’s going on, start local.

change starts with you, not words on the internet.

That is impressive. I wonder if they actually hire full time retail staff or if they try to only hire part time employees.

    • Emma

I worked with them in 2017… in my experience they only hired at part time (which was definitely not at the full time pay rate they advertised) because they like to “promote from within.” Wasn’t a bad place to work- the managers were great but it is a bit misleading.

      • Kate

That makes sense. They’ll probably keep everyone part-time to avoid the pay raise offered only to full-timers.
        So sad.

  3. kelli gol

That’s so great to see companies increasing pay!! I’d be curious to know what PT pay is since they seem to hire mostly part time. At least based on what I’ve seen in our area.

  4. Ivy

That’s more than I make as a Nurse.

    • berrylandnow

      You should be making more.

    • SavingsMama

Are you a CNA or LVN? I certainly hope you didn’t mean RN. With that being said, CNA are making $11-$16 an hour here. LVN are $16-$24. Both require training that costs money and testing that cost money in addition to numerous background checks, health clearances and uniform costs. But Hobby Lobby entry level work makes almost $20 an hour?! 😲

      • Ivy

I am a LPN which is the same as a LVN in the state of Ohio. I went to school and I took the NCLEX and I absolutely make less than this and I have been a LPN for many years. And if I could post a pic on this site I absolutely would post a pic of my pay 💯

        • Ivy

And if you spend a moment and look it up you will see there is an overwhelming exit of nurses in Ohio from the field entirely this year, due largely to the fact that they are overworked and underpaid and can find less stressful and less demanding jobs that pay a lot more, pay them COVID leave if they get it, and their licenses are at risk because they are taking care of more patients than they are supposed to be taking care of in 1/3 of the staff putting them at great risk for human error.

The Ohio board of nursing even posted that the numbers were overall low this year, as we report in

There hasn’t been a single raise to any nurse I know since before COVID but there has been crazy raises in retail and fast food. Nurses finishing LPN school aren’t even working in the field cause they get paid more at Walmart taking groceries out to the car and the local factories.

    • Carmen

A Registered Nurse would definitely not be making this comment. Neither will an LVN. If you are a CNA, I really wish time will come that you guys get a pay raise because you do the physical labor among all healthcare workers.

      • Ivy

I didn’t say nurse aide. I said Nurse. Licensed practical Nurse. I took my NClex. 🙂 But yes, nurse aides do an amazing amount of work and should be way higher as well.

Raising minimum wage is killing the middle man. It’s not meant to be a livable wage. It just makes EVERYTHING we buy go up!! People don’t seem to get that. 🤦🏼‍♀️

    • IB

Economics 101 isn’t taught in public schools anymore.

      • Amy

        This!! 100%!

      • Robin

        Exactly

    • SavingsMama

      Preach!! So true.

  6. IB

Most don’t realize the minimum wage was never intended to be a “living wage”. Either way, don’t applaud these higher wages and then complain when the price of goods increases too. In the end, the consumer, not the corporations, always pay.

    • Brandi

      100% 👊🏻

    • Anna

      Exactly

    • Eva

The minimum wage was absolutely intended to be a living wage. I’m sorry that you did not learn that in school.

  7. Amy

On one end of the stick, we want to see wages stay lower so that companies can afford to create more jobs, merchandise is cheap etc. but the other end of the stick is that when an employee doesn’t make a livable wage, it costs us all. Instead of a company dishing out the money to pay that employee, we as taxpayers cover the gap through welfare, subsidized housing, healthcare etc. I think it’s sometimes referred to as “corporate welfare”?? It isn’t as easy as “Economics 101”…For the most part, these large companies can afford to pay a more livable wage if everyone at the top makes a more reasonable wage.

    • Doug

I agree our welfare system is the biggest problem, but that’s another issue. The minimum wage could be $20 and we wouldn’t see a significant decrease in welfare. Welfare needs to be revamped completed and maybe then, hourly wage increases like this will have a trickle up effect. And saying execs should make a more reasonable wage is not the way a Democracy works. That’s Socialism 101.

      • Luna

and no, that is not “Socialism 101.” geez, no other political scientists here I see.

    • LUNA

no, that is NOT the definition of corporate welfare.

    Fabulous news

  9. Godisgr82all

This is great for the employees. Would love to work there, but my entire paycheck would go right back to them after purchasing their awesome merchandise. Love this store and its Christian values.

  10. Jodi P

Women cannot get birth control on Hobby Lobby’s health insurance.

    • Amy

I think that has been misrepresented a bit. If I remember correctly, Hobby Lobby’s policy covers traditional forms of birth control but the court case was over whether they had to cover Plan B (morning after pill) and IUD’s (because they can be used as emergency contraception if implanted up to 5 days after intercourse.) Their issue was not with birth control in general, but post-conception methods.

    • Mike

They don’t have to work there.
