Here’s our Hip team’s favorite grocery name brands worth paying full price…
“I am a southern mayonnaise girl – a very picky one. No matter the price, Blue Plate mayo is the only mayonnaise worthy of our family recipes; mom’s potato salad, pimento cheese, deviled eggs, tuna salad, home fries, mac n cheese casserole…it’s all better with Blue Plate. It’s really creamy, with just the right amount of tanginess that doesn’t intrude or overpower like Miracle Whip, but gives the perfect flavor base to build on.
Now that I’m thinking about my favorite southern comfort foods, I also swear by these red beans – I use them to make my cheater red beans, sausage and rice. Instead of several hours, it takes about 30 mins without giving up flavor or texture.” – Cara
“The one brand my family is super loyal to is Nabisco Oreos. We’ve tried a few other grocery brands of them through the years (ALDI, Publix, Walmart). I even bought some fakes and put them in the Nabisco packaging, but my kids and husband immediately knew 🤣. Nothing even comes close to the taste of Nabisco Oreos, so even if they are double the cost, they are worth it.
I feel the same about Lucky Charms cereal, like, I know that is not my magically delicious marshmallow. It’s General Mills or no cereal at all for me!” – Liz
“I’m the same about Post with their Fruity Pebbles. I have tried the generics, and I am confident that in a blind taste test, I would know the real Fruity Pebbles out of a group of wannabes. 😂 I feel that way about most generic cereals, and sometimes I don’t mind that they’re not spot on, but Pebbles are my fave so nothing comes close lol!“ – Emily
“Ooohh yes – so true about the Oreos! And also, Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa powder for baking and Heinz ketchup for me. Why do other brands of ketchup even exist?? 😂“ – Jenna R
“Oreos for sure. Also, Kellogg’s Raisin Bran – the generic and Post-brand versions just don’t taste as good. In fact, with most cereals, the generic versions always taste a little bit off.“ – Angela
“Best Foods Mayonnaise. I can’t with the avo oil ones or store brand. PS – Best Foods Mayonnaise continues to sell west of the Rockies, while Hellmann’s sells to the east. LOL!” – Lina
We can’t wait to hear your go-to grocery store name brands!
Stay tuned for more Hip Birthday giveaway posts all week long! 🎉 Until then, let’s get back to the deals…
Vital Eggs. Once you try them you cant go back to other.
Diet coke. The store brand is just not the same.
Kroger and Private Selection at Kroger. Grew up on Kroger and trust their products to deliver. They have a wide variety of products that I want, like no salt added canned vegetables and bronze-cut pasta, at awesome prices. In fact, we rarely buy actual brand-name items unless they are loss-leaders. We also have Ruler Foods in our area, which is an Aldi-style store with mostly Kroger brands. It’s a must-stop for us whenever we are in the “big town”, 30 miles away. We can save even more on the same Kroger/PS products there! I’m a devoted fan.
Duke’s Mayo. Just can’t replicate that taste.
I love King Arthur Flour products and Dawn. Those two I always buy! But of course, I look for deals on them 🙂
Cheerwine! I am turning into a North Carolina girl. That is the best soda.
Duke’s mayo! None other can compare!
Dr Pepper Nothing compares to the true brand name , NEVER lol
Cheez-it
Heinz ketchup!
The refrigerated Trader Joe’s Green Goddess Salad Dressing. It reminds me of a green smoothie in a bottle, so besides being the only salad dressing my husband will use I put it on a variety of other foods as well.
Coffee mate creamer
My go-to brand is Great Value. I do most of my grocery shopping at Walmart. I know I’ll almost always get the best price going with the Walmart brand, and the quality (to me) is the same. In fact, I think H2S did a post comparing GV items against brand names.
Martin’s Potato Bread/Rolls… we’ve tried other brands of potato bread and the entire family agrees Martin’s just tastes the best.
Honey Nut Cheerios. I’ve tried the store brands and nothing taste quite the same. They aren’t bad but they’re not the as good.
Best Foods Mayonnaise is the best! I will usually stock up when I find it on sale. Other brands don’t taste quite the same.
King Arthur gluten-free measure for measure flour!
Dollar tree big lighters, cards, spices, aluminum foil, bleach
Coke zero caffeine free is irreplaceable. No substitute
Great value. Their decaf and regular coffee is actually pretty darn good!
We are loyal to Maxwell House coffee, however I do try to get it on sale whenever possible. And because I’ve been concerned about whether coffee prices will go up due to the tariffs, I’ve got 10 large containers of it in my pantry so I don’t have to suffer potential sticker shock later.
Private Selection ice cream from Krogers is by far and away the best ice cream you can buy in a grocery store. Hands down. We won’t buy any other brand of ice cream now.
Tim Hortons Original Blend!
Siete is so worth it! Even though they were sold, as long as they don’t add terrible ingredients, I’m a fan for life!
Diet Coke—-all the others just don’t taste right.
We love Jif PB, Dukes Mayo and Philadelphia cream cheese. 🙂
Log Cabin Syrup. I grew up with it and no other brand tastes as good.
All the cereals I buy are name brand. Cherrios, Special K, Cocoa puffs. Private brands on cereal are very much not the same!
Coke. If I am going to drink that many calories, it has to be Coca-Cola!
Ratio Vanilla yogurt, so random but it’s the only yogurt I really enjoy.
So, I am going to have to go with Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayo. It’s worth it to me to buy that one over generic brand.
Kroger’s Simple Truth organic milk: it tastes like Stoneyfield, at a fraction of the price and is significantly easier to find.
Oreo, Heinz ketchup, best food mayonnaise, las palmas enchilada sauce, goldfish crackers!
Heinz ketchup and Hellmann’s mayonnaise
Canada Dry Zero Sugar Gingerale.. ice cold!
I will always drink Pepsi, nothing else. If I cannot have Pepsi then I won’t drink it. I will only buy it in stores if its on sale, otherwise if I am craving it, then fountain Pepsi is the best.
Chobani Creamer!
I agree with Nabisco Oreos. The others just aren’t in the same ballpark as far as taste.
Aldi’s Sourdough bread!
It’s got to be Dukes Mayonnaise for me. I love the taste and the fact that it doesn’t contain sugar. My husband can also eat it since it is gf.
Heinz ketchup!
Starbucks coffee – ground and iced!
All Sensitive Detergent, No Dyes, Perfumes -this is my go to. It cleans well and keeps our sensitive skin from breaking out!
Kerrygold Butter. I love it and would never stray!! LOL
Miracle Whip mayo. Will not make my famous potato salad without it!
Costco’s Kirkland peanut butter pretzels. Delicious!
general mills or kelloggs cereal, can’t find a store brand that tastes as good
HEB or Central Market
Any of the Target brands are my to go!
Nutella. The other knockoffs don’t taste the same.
