The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled about 5 million above-ground pools made with compression straps. These straps wrap around the pool on the outside of the supporting poles, creating a potential foothold that may allow a child to access the pool and drown. Children can gain access to the pools by climbing on these straps, even when the ladder is removed.

Sadly, the CPSC reports that nine children between the ages of 22 months and 3 years old have drowned after using these straps to gain access to the pools. These incidents occurred in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri between 2007 and 2022.
