Big Lots is Making a Comeback – The First Stores Open in April!
Some Big Lots stores are reopening!
On April 10th, Big Lots will be reopening nine of their stores in Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia with 70 more stores expected to reopen in May!
Variety Wholesalers took over around 200 Big Lots stores and will be reopening some of the stores it has acquired. They are currently deep cleaning, remodeling, and preparing to introduce new product categories to consumers. This may be just what is needed to save Big Lots!
In December of 2024, Big Lots announced they would close all of their stores. In a sudden turn of events, they agreed to a sale that transferred many Big Lots assets to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, LLC. As a result, Gordon Brothers has acquired between 200 to 400 stores.
You may know some of Gordon Brothers’ other companies like Variety Wholesalers, Roses Express, Maxway, Bill’s Dollar Stores, Super 10, Super Dollar, and Bargain Tow. They operate primarily in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
Per the press release on the sale, the agreement was, “subject to approval by the Bankruptcy Court and other customary closing conditions.”
What led to Big Lots announcing Going Out of Business sales?
According to the store, high inflation and interest rates impacted customer purchasing behavior. As a result, Big Lots announced it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September. The store hoped to be acquired by the private equity firm, Nexus Capital Management. Though that sale has not been completed yet, it seems Big Lots has protected some of the value of its estate and the future of its stores by entering this agreement with Gordon Brothers.
