Costco Plans to Stop Selling Books Year-Round!
After January 2025, Costco will stop selling books year-round!😱
Earlier this week, The New York Times reported that Costco will stop selling books year-round beginning in January 2025. According to the article, the news comes from four publishing industry executives who wished to remain anonymous, as Costco has not publicly announced the change.
We know this: Costco plans to stock books only during the last four months of the year, from September to December, to coincide with the holiday shopping season.
The decision is a move by Costco meant in part to reduce labor for staff, as books are among the more labor-intensive items to stock. Each title is unboxed and stacked by hand, and new titles are released weekly on Tuesdays.
Plus, any books not sold within a specific time period have to be returned to the publisher.
Although Costco doesn’t hold a large part of the market share, by selling books, it has offered a convenient way for shoppers to pick up a good read while shopping for essential items, and for many, it has offered a way to browse books in person that isn’t possible online.
