Free Comic Book Day 2023 is here! Here’s what it’s all about!
Say hip hip hooray for Free Comic Book Day!
Today, May 6th is Free Comic Book Day! You can find a list of participating shops in your area by heading here and entering your zip code.
In addition to passing out free comics, many local shops celebrate the day with contests, creator signings, photo opportunities with costumed characters, and more!
Be sure to check the “Special Area Events” tab as there may be more detailed information regarding any special promotions a particular store may be offering today. For example, one of the comic shops in my area is also running a canned food drive where you can snag additional free comics in return for your donations. How cool is that?!
Note that there is typically a limit of one free comic book per person, however, some shops may be offering more. Many stores have included this information under their FCBD listing which may help you determine which shop(s) you want to venture to.

Free Comic Book Day is designed to encourage those interested to head to their local comic shop. Whether you’re an avid comic book reader or have kids that are curious about comics, you’ll want to check out this event and score a free comic book while you’re at it!
Local comic stores provide a unique experience for the whole family, and you can find more than just comics there, including games, toys, collectibles, trading cards, and so much more.
What titles will be featured during Free Comic Book Day 2023?
Each year, the FCBD sponsor committee chooses a handful of titles, called the Gold Sponsor collection, that you can get for FREE at ALL participating locations on Free Comic Day. This year’s selection is really good!
Here are the titles you can expect to see…
- Seismic Stories (Aftershock Comics) – Find out what happens when a group of teenagers accidentally release a dark force found inside an abandoned house.
- Archie Horror Presents: The Cursed Library (Archie Comics) – Discover why Riverdale is an epicenter of terrifying tales and scary monsters.
- Ranger Academy (Boom! Studios) – Power Rangers fans will enjoy this bold new take on Power Rangers mythology.
- The Umbrella Academy/The Witcher (Dark Horse Comics) – Join the infamous siblings of The Umbrella Academy as they use their superpowers to stop the universe’s demise. Then join Geralt from the Witcher as he discovers why women are turning into frogs.
- Red Sonja: She-Devil With A Sword #0 (Dynamite Entertainment) – This brand new Sonja adventure is in honor of Red Sonja’s 50th anniversary.
- Dog Man And The League of Misfits (Graphix) – Dave Pilkey’s Captain Underpants is 25 1/2 years old. To celebrate, fans can pick up this all-new comic featuring their favorite characters like Dog Man, Captain Underpants, Petey the Cat, and more! Free Comic Book Day isn’t the only way that Pilkey is celebrating this anniversary. Check out all the ways you can join in the fun!
- Star Trek (IDW Publishing) – Fans can get an exclusive prelude to the first Star Trek crossover event.
- FISHFLIES #1 (Image Comics) – Unusual events and bad omens occur when a runaway child befriends a monster.
- All Ages Gold Sampler (Kodansha Comics) – Calling all manga lovers! Get a sneak peek at the manga adaptation of a Netflix hit.
- Amazing Spider-man/Venom (Marvel) – Major villain Meridius is preparing for war. Will catastrophe ensue or will someone save the day?
- Avengers/X-men (Marvel) – These all-new stories will set the stage for The Fall of X and also introduce the lineup for a new team book being released next year.
- Conan the Barbarian (Titan Comics) – Enjoy this story featuring Young Conan who dreams about all the adventures coming his way in the future.
- Choujin X/Rooster Fighter (Viz Media) – In Choujin X, a superhuman mutant attacks two best friends, turning one of them into a Choujin. When you finish that comic, enjoy a fun read with Rooster Fighter, a story about a determined rooster attempting to save humanity from monsters.
What’s the difference between the Gold Comics collection and the Silver Comics collection?
Each year, the FCBD committee chooses the selection of titles that will be available sans cost during Free Comic Book Day. These comics are either considered Gold or Silver.
The Gold Comics that we listed above are FREE books that are available at every single participating location.
The Silver Comics are FREE books that may be available at select locations. The 2023 list of Silver Comics includes notable titles like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Shadowman Dark Legacy. For the full list of Silver Comics, visit the Free Comic Book Day website.
