These plants are beautiful and a great option if you don’t have a green thumb.
I have spent the last few months researching plants/soils/the lighting in my house and finally figured out exactly what would work for me. There’s an agricultural area not too far from where I live and I’ve been able to purchase many of my plants for under $9 each and tons of beautiful planters at Home Goods and Marshall’s.
My fiddle leaf fig was my most expensive purchase at $25 for a 4′ tree.

This is for sure not hip2save material. Chinese money plants are not easy to tend. I have a green thumb and I would compare it to the finicky nature of the fiddle leaf fig. Also, I purchased my Chinese money plant for $15 on amazon. These prices are insanely overpriced. There are other online stores with more reasonable prices .
I had sticker shock at these prices even with the disclaimer that this is not a typical post for the site. Then I started to think about the cost of sending a nice bouquet of flowers and suddenly these plants didn’t seem quite as bad. I wouldnt purchase them for myself at this price, but I’d consider sending them as gifts to loved ones who live far away.I bought my mother in laws tongue at Aldi for $3!

I wanted to read this post because it is rare to see one from Collin. But afterwards I have to say I was a little upset and disappointed. Please don’t bash me fellow readers and I am not trying to be mean(Collin) but this is why I still follow hip2save but just not as much as before. I guess what I am trying to say is I miss the days where Tuesday was the Target video with Collin showing us deals we could get on a budget. While I understand that blogs change or grow I just feel sometimes this one has changed in a negative way. Sorry, I understand wanting to share about a new found place to buy things but that is what some people spend on groceries for a week or even part of a month. Again not trying to upset anyone.

Lowes and home depot have 1 year plant guarantees. Just save all your plant receipts in one drawer. I’ve used a few times. They literally dont care. I thought it would be embarrassing but when u can go get another plant with your plant guarantee refund its great.

In my opinion, when we’re saving so much money on things that I have to buy anyway, splurging sometimes is okay!! I just had a Kohl’s receipt where I bought 47 items for $86.69…and “saved” $765.18! This is listed under Deals. The difference between a post for cheap kids clothes and a post for expensive plants is that the kids clothes post is actually a deal. Overpriced plants are not. Now, I can appreciate that people can just ignore this post. I did the first time I read it, but that does not change the fact that it really rubbed me the wrong way. A $250 houseplant is more than a splurge for many people.
A $20 sweatshirt is a huge splurge for some, too. Chump change for others. Just because a $200 house plant isn’t in your budget doesn’t mean it isn’t for others. in my opinion, something doesn’t have to be less than the “original price” to be a deal. For someone, this might be a deal because of the convenience and quality. My point is that there’s no reason to comment negative things to Collin just because one post out of hundreds doesn’t apply to someone. ESPECIALLY when she added a ton of qualifiers in the beginning of the post and is in no way pretending that everyone can afford them.

Beth, I think you are taking it too enthusiastically. I don’t think I saw a single rude negative comment. If some readers share their opinion which doesn’t necessary correspond with yours, it does not mean they don’t have a point. To me it’s not just if I can afford it, it’s also the matter of value. Many readers are learning to be more responsible, stick to the budget, or whatever the reason to follow this blog, not always to be able to afford to simply survive. Both critical and optimistic feedback is necessary in order for this blog to continue growing.
I think itās sticks out because they are not on special or a deal. They are original prices and itās a big splurge.
Hi Wendy, I don’t speak for Collin, but I do speak as a small business owner that puts a high value on customer service and the highest quality product. Not everything can or should be purchased from China or the “Big Box” stores or Amazon. Sometimes, people want to support small businesses that are providing higher quality and service to customers who value that more than just getting something for the cheapest price possible. So, to answer your question… 1) She had a wonderful experience with a Small business and it’s a great thing to spread the word for small businesses that can’t afford advertising like Lowes or Amazon. 2) She noted that it’s not in everyone’s budget, but may be in the budget of other people. 3) It’s her website and she can do whatever she wants.

This $500 plant post actually makes me feel really bad. It actually depresses me that I will never be able to pay these prices for a potted plant delivery service. I donāt come here for a glimpse of the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Thatās a different website.
I am also a small business owner and I agree with your points in theory. Supporting small business is great, but the value must be there. There is no substantive difference in the $30 pothos you buy at your local nursery versus those that start at $109 on Leon and George, and I think that’s what most people here are having difficulty with (since the site is ostensibly about saving money). But you have to know what you are paying for. With a nursery, you get a product. Leon and George is a high-end service. Two very different things. With a local nursery, you take into account your time driving around shopping for a plant and pot. Leon and George can reduce the time spent actually shopping, but you’re paying for the elegantly designed site, the curated, user friendly information, their customer guarantee, custom packaging, shipping, as well as the product itself. From a strictly financial perspective, one’s hourly earnings would have to be quite high in order to make the time savings a worthwhile factor, which is why this post seems so out of touch with the demographic of this site. For me, the greater disservice is the emphasis on “small business”; Leon and George may be a small business but it’s a high-end service, and the convenience is what you are paying for. Conflating it with small businesses like the family-owned nursery in your town is what sends customers to big-box retailers and kills small businesses. The prices at your local small-business nurseries and garden centers are typically more comparable to Lowe’s than they are to Leon and George.
Maybe I am the only one but I love to save where I can so I can splurge when I want! I have well over 50 snake plants, devil’s ivy, peace lily plants in my house and although I personally love getting plants around mothers day when they are $5-$10 and purchasing fancy pots on Amazon, I think splurging is such a WONDERFUL feeling and a nice reward for saving so much everywhere else. Outrageous prices! Sorry, but I have a green thumb and can grow almost any plant from a cutting. Every January, Home Depot has many small exotic starter houseplants for $4 – $5, that’s when I buy any plants that I don’t already have. I have some plants that are now 20 years old.
The Zanzibar Gem is also called a zz plant. They are indestructible and love neglect. I have had four of them for 6 years. I have them in bathrooms with no natural light. I rotate them through my house so that the bathroom plants do get light sometimes.

I was so proud that my porch plants survived the summer but the winter was the death of them. Or I could google “indestructible plants”, ha ha ha! š

I like this post because I have started to invest in house plants in my house and I am always looking for new ones. I think my next one will be the zanzibar. Although I will get mine from the local gardening shop I think it’s great that there is a place online that offers nice plants. Although the “big box stores” carry plants for a few bucks a nice planter and soil will cost you extra and lots of people don’t want to deal with that.

I have sent my mom a bouquet of flowers that cost close to what you paid for one of your plants. When I think about it like that, a plant would have lasted unlike the fancy bouquet I sent. “Buy Local” and I’m pretty much going to roll my eyeballs the rest of the year. I’m all about the “deal” and as much as I want to support local business, I value the “deal” more over local – except where plants are concerned. I’m a big fan of my local nurseries and greenhouses (I spend HUNDREDS in the spring in summer – most from the clearance rack too!) and it just doesn’t make sense to mail-order a plant, unless its an exotic orchid or perennial – IMO. More “real deals” please – the kind where you save LOTS of $$$

Yes, this! I have been a follower pretty much since the beginning. Back then we were living paycheck to paycheck and those deals meant everything. Now we have more expendable income (in part thanks to Hip2Save) and can appreciate deals on pricier, quality items – or even a non-sponsored post about a company that goes above and beyond. Iām not a Walmart shopper, so when I see those postings I scroll on by. Others should learn to do the same. š By the way, I LOVE plants and spent a lot around Motherās Day but most did not survive. There is NO savings whatsoever. How can H2S seriously recommend this??? H2S should have posted a “DIY Plant Post” comparing the cost of THIS overpriced snake plant and REAL savings by doing it yourself for WAY LESS! This plant post should be removed immediately.

If you were not paid or not given plants to share your opinion then this is a deal.
Before I begin to say how this is a deal let me explain. It’s getting harder and harder to guess which “deals” on H2S are paid for by sponsors with money or with freebies or if they are mlm. I wish your deals would state whether they are sponsored ads (regardless if you are paid, received for free, or part of a mlm where you earn bigger compensation for people buying thru your links)
This way we can go into the deal posts or opinion piece without questioning authenticity or feel duped when we find out the items were either junk or didnt work for us.
With that said let me explain how this is a deal. Deals don’t have to be money saving only, they can be time saving, sanity saving, or splurges.
Many times a quality item or service will cost money that most are not willing to spend.
But just because the deal doesnt ally to you for any reason above, doesnt mean that a “pricey” deal doesnt apply to others

Yes, definitely pricey. But how about free plants? That’s my thing. I have sprawling aloe and elephant ear that are very hardy. Little aloe babies are so easy to replant and gift/give away. Only cost is some soil and a terracotta container. For elephant ear, just clip and stick in new soil. Also, pathos is so easy to reproduce. Just clip a piece and place in water until it roots then plant. This can be done with many plants, purple heart and pencil cactus are two varieties.

Yup! I’ve gotten free plants, cuttings, etc. on Craigslist and Freecycle and propagated some of my own. There are all sorts of decorative vases and beakers on Amazon to start cuttings stylishly. I like to (attempt to) rehabilitate clearance plants at Lowe’s, too, and I have a collection of planters and pots because I tend to be picky so I buy them when I find ones that speak to me. Target has carried styles similar to those in the post for the past several years.
I love the disclaimer about the cost š. Just wanted to say I absolutely love the idea of giving plants as gifts. I’ve always been a big fan of sending something like this rather than flowers that will die in a week or two. I also think it’s cool you’re helping out a small business by sharing your positive experience!

I should drop this link for my husband before Valentineās Day, haha. I tell him to get me a real plant and not a bouquet of roses (he spent $75 on a bouquet 3 yrs ago, I remember because our budget was tiiiiight! And I was tracking every purchase!) but every year he gets me a bouquet. A couple more bucks and he wouldnāt even have to leave the house to go to Loweās to get a plant and I would get what I wanted. Totally not an everyday purchase, but I regularly buy plants as gifts for family members. The best one was a deal on a mini rose bush for my mom for Motherās Day years ago on proflowers. Itās huge and blooms every year. I didnāt even know you could order houseplants online. Thanks for posting!
It did very clearly state āit will cost ya!ā But I completely get the backlash. People come to this site looking for good quality, thrifty deals. Costly online plants are a huge contradiction of what people come here for. Everyone is able to forget that Hip2Save is a business, the site does so well sharing deals in what seems like a friendly, conspiratorial way: like friends chatting over coffee. When a post like this comes up out of nowhere, it is jarring. It doesnāt fit the mold and it probably feels like a betrayal to the long time readers. But, Hip2Save *is* a business. So we have to take an ill fitting post like this as a business decision. There was a reason it was posted. This backlash was not unanticipated. In the end, someone determined the benefit (which is really none of our concern) was worth the risk. Iām going to keep checking for deals, enjoying the savings, and appreciating the site. Iāll look the other way on whatever purpose this post is filling. Still love Hip2Save. š

Long time reader! I’m not a big commenter but I just wanted to say that even though right now this is out of my budget I still enjoyed reading the post. For those who don’t feel like this is a hip deal you’re right it’s not. But who cares? It said in the title it wasn’t a deal so move on. I found it interesting to read about and I enjoy many of the posts that aren’t deal related. It keeps things interesting. Thanks Collin for sharing something that made you happy. I know the feeling of wanting to tell everyone about something that makes you happy and excited. I think we all know that feeling. Congratulations on your success.
