Tie dye kits are great for summer, sleepovers, and more! Here are the best ones you can score…
Dye-ing to find the BEST tie dye kit?
Tie-dye is back in a major way, not only as a craft but also as a popular fashion trend. Plus, with kids home for the summer, there’s never been a better time to keep the entire family entertained with one of these fun DIY kits!
Our team loves this Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit on Amazon or Michaels.com! It’s AWESOME because it comes with everything you need plus a nice storage bin – but it can be a little pricey and it’s always selling out!
Fortunately, we’re rounding up the best tie dye kits you can grab at other retailers when you can’t find the popular Tulip one!
1. This tie dye kit at Walmart is almost identical in price and the number of pieces.
CreateBasics 94- Piece Tie Dye Party Tub Kit
Only $14.97!
Just like the popular Tulip kit, this one includes 14 vibrant dye colors with 18 easy-squeeze bottles, rubber bands, plastic gloves, a surface protector, & more! This one actually boasts enough dye to create 56 projects instead of the standard 36.
Will definitely buy again! We made 15 shirts, some with full rainbow colors with just a bit of dye left over. We are all very happy with the end results! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
2. This Target tie dye kit is the LOWEST price & has awesome reviews!
Mondo Llama Give it a Swirl Tie Dye Kit
Only $10!
Includes 8 dye bottles, a drop cloth, and dropper. If you don’t need a bunch of extra dye laying around, this kit is a great option!
Really fun, simple, and the colors turned out great. Very nice to have everything included, and the bottles and rubber bands are pretty easy to reuse/repurpose. Plenty of dye for at least two adult sized shirts. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
3. A tie dye kit on Amazon could give you even more bang for your buck!
HTVRONT Tie Dye Kit
Only $22.99 (regularly $28.99)!
Includes 32 pre-filled dye bottles – just add water! Plus, you’ll also get FOUR tablecloths, 20 gloves, and so much more!
Bought this product to tie dye with my preschoolers. 10/10 in quality, was able to make 20 youth shirts and 10 adult shirts. All washed and no color bleeding. I didn’t wait the 24 hours before washing, instead I microwave each shirt for 1:30 before washing. I will be buying again! Such a great price for all that you get! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
4. This spray tie dye kit at Hobby Lobby requires no water or washing!
Neon Tumble Dye Tie Dye Kit Value Pack
Only $11.99!
With this unique tie dye kit all you do is shake the prefilled water-based bottles, spray, create, air dry, and heat set using an iron or dryer – how cool is that? It’s good for fabrics, ribbons, dried flowers, and so much more and makes up to 32 shirts!
I had no problems with saturation! I just held the spray bottle a little closer for a deeper saturation. And the colors are amazingly vibrant i love how they blend together when spraying them next to each other! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tulip One-Step Tie–Dye Kit
Only $14.99!
Hip Sidekick, Lina, has tried this popular Tulip kit herself & had this to say…
I love that you can try the different tie-dye techniques they suggest in the directions, or you can just do your own thing. There really isn’t a way to do tie-dye wrong — you just want to try not to do all the colors at once on top of each other to make a muddled-looking mess.
These dyes are safe to machine wash. I have found that the colors stay pretty bright and bold even with repeated washings. There is some fading, but not much!
And just look at how CUTE her daughter’s shirts turned out! 😍
Wondering how to use a tie dye kit?
1. Lay your shirt or other project on a flat surface to start binding. To bind: pinch in the center and swirl in one direction to create a ‘circle’. (This is the most common Spiral Tie Dye Technique but you can try whatever folding method you prefer!)
2. Tie Rubber bands all around your shirt. Typically 3-4 bands are used to create a ‘pie shape’.
3. Fill your bottles with water, shake, and apply the dye to the shirts! *Try not to layer or mix colors. Instead, consider saturating each ‘pie piece’ with a different color die or alternating between multiple colors.
4. Place the shirts in a plastic bag to keep them wet overnight to really let the dye soak in.
5. The following day, remove the bands, rinse off the shirts in the sink until the water no longer has color, and wash/dry using your washer/dryer.
Here are a few helpful tips for the BEST tie-dying results:
- Be sure to wear an apron or clothing you don’t mind getting stained. Check out this fun Glad Press-n-Seal hack for kids’ messy crafts!
- Some people recommend soaking shirts in vinegar before the washer/dryer step for 30 minutes, as it’s supposed to make the color last even longer. I have not done that but would like to next time.
- Tulip has amazing easy-to-follow tips on how to create specific designs at TieDyeYourSummer.com for helpful inspiration!
- Consider doing this activity outside as it is a messy craft and could easily stain things in your home you don’t want to be dyed. Tip: If you do make a mess Magic Eraser does a good job of removing tie-dye spills from cabinets and counters! 😉
We are SO OBSESSED with this trend – have you tried it yet? 😍
I have used two of these kits and I highly recommend the Artisan Soda Ash one above. Soaking the items in soda ash gave us brighter vibrant colors. The kit that doesn’t use soda ash gave us muted and more pastel items.
The black and pink one is so cute!
Thanks H2S! I’m planning a tie dye party for my nieces and nephews and was trying to narrow down my options. This helps. 🙂
You’re welcome, Beverly! So happy to hear this post was helpful for you! 🤗 Hope your family has a great time at the tie dye party! 🎉❤️
Walmart has their Gildan shirts for $2.98 each. Sizes are limited, but such a great deal. Michael’s also had their shirts on sale for $2.99 each.
Thanks for the heads up on where you’ve spotted some affordable shirt options for dying, Adrianne! 💖
