sealing bag of chips with heat sealer

Looking for a smart way to seal chip and snack bags? This product is genius!

Stale chips are the worst! Check out this innovative kitchen tool I recently bought that seals the ends of snack and food packaging back together so it’ll extend the life of your food and avoids waste. If your family is anything like mine, constantly opening food and then also leaving it open in the pantry 🤪 – this is such a smart solution.

Here’s the bag sealer I bought on Amazon:

holding a mini heat sealer

Nope, this isn’t a hair straightener!

The Karidge mini handheld bag sealer is available via Amazon.com, and is a highly rated kitchen tool that’ll keep snacks fresh! Plus, I have to admit, the inner neat freak in me loves that it helps store snacks in a tidy-looking way compared to a bulky chip clip. 🤗

re-sealing a bag of chips using a handheld heat sealer

How to Use:

It’s so simple! Plug in the bag sealer and let it heat up for about 30 seconds, and then press down going along the edges of the bag for a second or so and it will slightly melt the ends together. Easy peasy!

Reasons I LOVE this handheld heat sealer:

  • Prevents foods from going stale, which saves money and waste.
  • This heat sealer works on a variety of plastic bags, snack bags, and cellophane bags.
  • It heats up quickly and is very easy to use.
  • Storing is easy because the product is lightweight and small. It comes with a handy storage case, too.

sealing a small bag of nuts using bag sealer

This idea isn’t just for chips!

I’ve been going through the pantry sealing all my smaller open bags of cooking spices, nuts, chocolate chips, specialty flours, and anything I usually fold and clip to avoid spills. This is such a smarter way to keep all these things neat and sealed.

Also if you have a food saver you can do this too…. I always forget lol. Thanks for the reminder.

    • MaaMaaBear

You can do this with a food saver??? I had no idea!!!

    • Jana

Thanks for this tip, never thought to do that! Also, if you need to marinate meats and it comes in a vacuum sealed bag – cut the bag open, add your marinade/seasoning then use your food saver to reseal. No need to waste a pricey gallon size zip loc.

How does it work when u try to open bag back up?

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

You can pull it open again or cut it.

  3. Della

I have this and love it. We have went from a family of 7 down to 2 and it is hard to adjust to shopping and cooking in smaller quantities so use this all the time.

  4. Lauren

We also use our Foodsaver at home for this daily, but I’m going to pick up one of these for our camper. Thanks!

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      oh neat idea- thanks Lauren!

How do you do it with a food saver leaving it in the original bag? Or do you need to use the food saver bags ?

      • Amber

I leave it in the original bag and leave enough room to cut and reseal. I usually just press most of the air out vs using the machine to suck it out. You just place it in and press seal.

Does the bag really pull apart? I used a smaller hand held heat sealer on bags and I had to cut them each time I wanted to open them, which made the bag smaller each time you opened it, not good if you open it every day. I just use a chip clip on my bags, easier than dragging something out of the drawer every time.

    • Ruby

Sorry but you have to cut it open, it sucks if you seal up chips & then you forget the scissors ✂️ on a camping trip!

  6. Shelly

I just my seal a meal. Seal it in the same bag it came in then we just cut off the option we sealed for the next seal. Use it on chips and cereal mostly.

  7. ET

This seems to be a lot of work for bags that would get opened regularly, but could be useful for stuff that doesn’t get used everyday. Also, with 2 teenage boys in the house, most food disappears before even having a chance to get stale!

  8. Amber

I just place it in the food save and press seal. A lot easier for me to find the machine vs a clip or rubber band. We use it mostly for cereals or thing we won’t eat often.

  9. Chris

    Got one! Hope it works!

    • Irene (Hip Sidekick)

      Enjoy it, Chris!

this looks like my daughters flat iron. LOL

    • Sarah Pelgrin

That’s what I thought.. I wonder if a flat iron would work since I have that already 🙂

  11. TheQueenBee

I’ve seen people on YouTube videos do this with their flat iron or regular clothes iron by putting some tin foil over the plastic bag to protect the irons.

    • Nicky

How does that work? Wouldn’t plastic melt?

      • TheQueenBee

The tin foil is basically folded in half over the two sides of the plastic bag that you want to seal. The video I saw only had the iron on the foil for 3-5 seconds. The foil kept the irons clean and let the heat through to melt the plastic ends together.

  12. Jill

I have one of these and it the bomb. I love mine.

    • Lina D (Hip2Save Sidekick)

      Yay thanks Jill!

  13. Ariavenew

Has anyone had issues of using something other than the original packaging/bag? Like if I’m using an actual ziplock? Is that plastic too soft, so to speak?
