Is Walmart’s New Kids Clothing Line Better Than Target’s Cat & Jack Brand?!
My kids tried the trendy, new Walmart kid’s clothes brand and I had to share!
If you told me these Walmart kids clothes were from a trendy, new Instagram shop, I’d believe you. Modern designs, quality materials, and a commitment to sustainability, yet still maintaining affordable prices are just a few of the reasons people are going crazy for this new brand.
…And they just may have converted the Target shopper in me. 😏
Have you heard of the new Walmart Free Assembly kids clothing brand?!
I’m just going to be totally blunt with you all for a minute…
I have always somewhat disliked Walmart.
There. I said it. 😯 (Don’t come after me). 😅 It’s just something about the chaotic shopping atmosphere & supporting a major retailer that never had me leaving the store feeling good about my decisions. I’ve probably only stepped foot in a Walmart 5 times in the past 10 years! 😱 But this kids clothing brand, guys…
THIS. BRAND. THOUGH! 👏🏻 They’ve converted me.
And for the record, this post isn’t sponsored. I mean, I just admitted I’ve never really liked Walmart! But after hearing about the Free Assembly line and being blown away by how adorable all the looks were, I had to give it a shot with my kiddos.
Albeit, I still ordered everything online (yay for convenient free two-day shipping!), but I love these clothes so much and feel so good about all of them! Just the fact I wouldn’t even know they were from Walmart is still blowing my mind. 🤯
The attention to detail, modern tags, and quality materials are nothing like what you’re used to getting from a Walmart brand. Nothing.
Several of the Free Assembly Kids clothes in the new Fall collection also include organic cotton or recycled polyester. 👏🏻 And to top it off, they have an incredible range of sizes available starting at size 4 all the way up to size 18!
I’d even go as far as to say these are a step above Target’s popular Cat & Jack line. 😳
Here are the pieces I ordered:
Boys:
- Free Assembly Boys Organic-Cotton Flannel Shirt Jacket – $17
- Free Assembly Boys Mock Neck Quarter Zip – $18
- Free Assembly Boys Organic-Cotton Carpenters Pants – 2 Pack – $34 ($17 each)
- Free Assembly Boys Organic-Cotton Slim Jeans – 2-Pack – $32 ($16 each)
Girls:
I know what you’re thinking… these prices are way too much for Walmart. 😒
I hear you, friends. However, Walmart’s in-house design team has totally revamped their style and brand with these new Walmart kids’ clothes – it’s their ultimate goal for Walmart’s fashion future.
The modern silhouettes, quality fabrics, and fashion-forward details are so much more than the “Walmart fashion” you’re used to.
They’ve totally outdone themselves and trust when I say, they’re WORTH the price tag. 👏🏻
Of course, this is Hip2Save so we’re still crossing our fingers for a future sale or clearance deal. 😉
That said, I have ZERO regrets about these Walmart kids’ clothes. 😍
The flannels are thick and soft, the carpenter pants are thoughtfully designed (tough, yet trendy), and the jeans are nice and thick so I know they’ll last through many washes. They feel even better than jeans I’ve spent twice as much on before! 👏🏻
My son who is also pretty lanky loves the fit. Slim with an adjustable waistband, and a versatile wash that will make these jeans a staple all season long! Better yet, they come in packs of two!
Even the denim joggers for my daughter are thick & soft and the ribbed shirt is so timeless and cute! Plus, I love that the entire Free Assembly line is almost all organic cotton and super neutral & simple so mixing and matching freely is easy peasy – a huge bonus for this minimalist shopper! 🥰
Now, I’ve tried other Walmart kids’ clothing brands before and have always been disappointed with them after washing them, but the Free Assembly clothes continue to impress me.
And so far they stand up to all my kiddo’s crazy shenanigans. LOL. 🤣 Every mom’s dream, am I right?!
Here are a few reasons why:
- After washing, each piece of clothing still feels just as soft as when I unboxed them.
- All of the pants wash SO well – i.e. no weird wrinkling due to cheap materials.
- None of the clothes had weird shrinking in general.
- You still get convenient higher-end details like the hidden, adjustable waistbands.
Every piece fits my kiddos so well too! 😍
Not only am I a happy momma, but my kiddos love their new Walmart Free Assembly kids’ clothes!
Funny enough, they even know I’m not a Walmart shopper, so when I told them that’s where they were from, they didn’t even believe me! 😂
Needless to say, we all love the new Free Assembly kids clothes and they’re ready for Fall! 🥰🍂
Check out some other pieces I have my eye on from the Walmart Free Assembly kids line:
Target already announced their hottest kids toys for Christmas! 😱
I love the wonderkids brand as much as cat and jack. My daughter wears dresses constantly and they are about $3 cheaper per dress…plus made of organic cotton!
That’s wonderful! I’m so happy to hear you love their stuff! If you give Free Assembly a try, let us know how you like it!
I like the quality of garanimals clothes line for babies. I did not like Wonderkids’ quality, pretty much everything is made of polyester. Okay, is it me or someone else is not crazy about this new Free Assembly line? The design is so boring, sad and old-fashioned; the pieces advertised in this post look like there were made during the Great Depression. I hope the quality is decent at least.
So sorry you aren’t a fan, Mila! I personally love the simple design and colors, but I know it’s not for everyone. They do make great staple pieces that can go with anything though so perfect for styling with fun pieces too. I can say they’re far better quality than Wonderkids though!
The quality on these does not look good to me. Better off with Cat & Jack.
Yeah, and price is better at Target. I like that Cat & Jack guarantee their clothing for 1 year.
I really do love and appreciate posts like this on Hip2Save! Keep them coming and thanks for “introducing” the new line. I haven’t been familiar with this before, but I am excited to try these new clothes they are offering. (Wal-mart’s Wonder Kids and Garanimals have been my “go-to” through the years for potty training!)
I have no doubt you will love these pieces then, Materof6! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post too. Happy Shopping!
You never really liked supporting a big retailer, but yet shop at Target? Lol. I don’t like target. I go there only when I have to. I don’t like the often rude employees (At least at Walmart, I expect it) and often rude shoppers. I also don’t like Target’s incessant need for political pandering. It is nice to see Walmart trying to ‘keep up with the Jones’. Too bad my two youngest boys have just moved beyond kids sizes. Thanks for the heads up, though.
Thanks for your feedback, jaimiv! I do about 90% of my kid’s clothes shopping from a local consignment shop and I often find Target’s Cat & Jack clothes there. It’s pretty rare that I ever pay full price for clothes since I have 3 kiddos to clothe plus I just love and feel so good about consignment shopping. However, when I need to shop at a big retailer, Target is typically first on my list. 🙂 Hopefully, that better explains things.
As for the Walmart Free Assembly kids line, it goes up to size 18 and they also have an already established line for adults. If you do give any of their pieces a try I hope you love them!
Guess there is a cycle of every old trend coming back with a huge following.
Every few 20-40s years.

Thanks so much for a thoughtful, well-written article. I appreciate your focus on the construction and fabric content of a garment. Fashion comes and goes. Quality lasts. I’m going to give this line a try for my granddaughter now that I know the jeans are adjustable. She’s very tall but super skinny.
You’re so welcome, JD827! I’m really glad you loved this post and hope your granddaughter loves her new clothes!
It’s not just the kids clothes. I bought a few trendy things for myself from Walmart lately and was pleasantly surprised at how much I love it.
YES! I couldn’t agree more after trying some of the adult Free Assembly stuff after trying the kid’s clothes. Love them!
I think they’re cute! Wish I could still pick out my kids clothes!
I hear that, mimismith! Somehow none of mine are too picky yet. LOL!
I never disliked Walmart styles BUT, hated how they worn out so fast! These prices are way too high for me personally- I recently learned that ThredUP has an Outlet and I pay $2.40 + for name brand gently used items for my son. Coupon/ referral code- https://www.thredup.com/r/KLS4FA
That sounds like a wonderful alternative. Thank you for sharing, tiffanydavis! I love consignment shopping for my kiddos too and will have to give this a try. 🙂
I would never pay those prices for Walmart clothes. My kids get clearance rack clothes and hand me downs. I always buy clothes on clearance when I find them. They are for my gift closet, but my kids go through it as well. When they hit about 11 or 12 they can choose their own clearance rack clothes or save their allowance to buy full price stuff. Fyi none of them pay full price once given the option lol
What a great idea! I think that teaches your kiddos such a valuable lesson in spending money wisely. Thanks for sharing!
I would like to see clothes for “husky” boys size 18-20. I have only seen “husky” boys 14-16. Also, would like to see Medium or Large pants, sweat pants, or athletic ones for SHORT MEN.
Most of the men’s pants are too long on the legs and arms.
I’ve seen some of the teen retailers have shorter length pants like american eagle and aeropostale. Sometimes they have pretty good clearance.
Those sizes between boys and men’s are so hard! My son is an 18ish and pretty short. They can be hard to find, especially in pants. Good luck; I feel your pain.
Y’all have to remember not every post is for every person lol damn
Thanks for highlighting this new brand of clothing. I think they’re cute and didn’t know about the changes being made at Walmart.
You’re so welcome, Sarah! I’m glad you enjoyed this post!
Walmart carries almost the full line of Wrangler Kids that wears like iron and lasts especially for boys. The Garanimals is just like when we were kids it wears well with rough play. The Healthtex line has been a good go to for me as well. Call me crazy but I’m not into keeping my kids super trendy. I guess they will thank me when their see their photos as adults lol. But for younger kids Walmart’s Wonder Nation for girls has some good looks and the nearly always sold out Jordash line is really fun.
I do like Cat and Jack I’ve found the girls leggings hold their color longer but the shirts run a little longer
The boys clothes tend to run skinny which is fine but for some reason at my stores only the husky and short sizes are in stock and I cannot get what I need.
Thank you for sharing this valuable feedback with us, Angela! I just found some Jordash pants at my local consignment shop for my daughter and I love them! I didn’t realize they were even from Walmart! So many good options that is for sure!
How does this brand run as far as sizing? My son is tall and lanky. He’s a true 7. I’m looking at some of the shirts and joggers in the free assembly brand and it’s either 6/7 or an 8. So I’m like dang which size do I order. He’s weird about his clothes too, if it’s a little too big he won’t wear it and I’m definitely not going to put something on him that’s too short. I’m stumped on sizing right now but have several 6/7’s in my cart. Thank you for the post. This brand really is cute.
