Sour Cream Banana Bread is My New Go-To Bread Recipe!

Banana Bread with Sour Cream

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 overripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9-inch loaf pan.

In a large mixing bowl, mix the sugar and softened butter. Mix in the eggs and mashed bananas, along with the vanilla extract and sour cream.

Add the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt to the bowl, and mix until everything is combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 50-60 minutes until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Let cool, and then remove from pan and serve. Enjoy!

Ever made banana bread with sour cream? Try it out!

Love soft banana bread for breakfast recipe or as a homemade snack idea?

Baking a loaf of banana bread is my favorite way to use up overripe bananas that have been left on the counter too long! Plus, there’s nothing quite as comforting or cozy as a warm piece of banana bread from the oven. Am I right?! 😋

After sharing my favorite Nutella banana bread recipe, I’ve been wanting to try adding sour cream to banana bread. This is because I’ve heard how much sour cream can benefit the outcome of cakes and quick breads. It adds moisture without thinning the batter and creates a soft, creamy texture.

This recipe is also a breeze to make as the batter comes together in only one bowl — yay for no extra dishes to clean!

Hip tips when making banana bread with sour cream:

  • Use overripe bananas that are past their prime so that the bread will have that stronger, sweet banana flavor and lots of speckles.
  • This recipe is for one 1.5 quart-sized loaf pan, but feel free to double the ingredients if you are wanting to make two.
  • Jazz up the bread however you like by adding in 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or chocolate chips before baking. And if you’d like some extra zing, try adding in lemon zest!
  • Instead of sour cream, you can use plain vanilla Greek yogurt or cream cheese!
  • If you have ripe bananas that you froze before they went bad, they’ll make an awesome addition to this banana bread. Here are some other ideas for how to use overripe bananas.

    Love this so much. Thank you!!! Do you know if I can use ripe bananas that I froze before they went bad? I usually use them for smoothies but I have never tried to bake withe them. Lina- you rock!!!!

    I have used this recipe for years and I always freeze my bananas for easier mixing. They thaw out quickly in a bowl of hot water, then peel and mash with a fork.

        I peel and stick in a ziploc in the freezer. Easy peasy. Let thaw and they literally mash themselves.

      You can freeze them peeled too. I just thaw them in my KitchenAid bowl.

    This is the recipe I use as well, I dump everything in the bread machine, help it mix, and set to bake. Easy way to be Best Mom Ever for a few hours. I regularly sub cream cheese, canned coconut milk or yogurt for sour cream. One of these days I’m going to sub bacon fat and see what happens 😝

    I have been using a similar recipe, it calls for just 1/2 c sugar vs 3/4 in this recipe. I like to add in 1/2 c chopped toasted walnuts and a few grates of nutmeg. Sooo good!

    Your recipe is very similar to mine, I use buttermilk, they both taste great. I use sour cream when I happen to have some on hand. But I always have buttermilk because I make my own!

    If you swap the sour cream for buttermilk, it will be so fluffy. Give it a try! I make it all the time, with banana frosting. My kids gobble it up!

        1T unsalted butter
        1/4t vanilla
        1-2c p sugar. (More powder sugar makes it thicker and harden more. I prefer 1c, but try both)

        Melt butter & mashed banana in microwave; add remaining ingredients. Pour over cooling bread
        *If icing begins to thicken up add very small amounts of boiling water (I like to heat up about 1/4c water in microwave and have it handy when I’m getting to icing time)
        This icing gives it a little extra pop! Delicious

    That’s the same recipe I use, except for the cinnamon. Sometimes I use buttermilk if I don’t have sour cream, both are delicious!

    I have my own recipe I use all the time, it’s very good…. This just had something MAGICAL about it! I love the sour cream in it!!! I had 3 bananas that were way over ripe, which since that means sweeter, I used less white sugar. Turned out amazing! I finally had a chance to use my Mexican vanilla I got from our last trip to Mexico and that was additionally exceptional! Thanks for the share!💕

      Made it with 3 bananas and 1/2 cup sugar. Added some chopped walnuts. Baked for 60 minutes. Perfect and delicious
