Easy Restaurant Style Black Bean Burgers Made in the Blender!
Love a good black bean burger piled high with all your favorite toppings?
I’m sharing an awesome restaurant-style black bean burger recipe that’s simple to make for a meatless dinner idea any night of the week. It’s inspired by the popular meatless black bean burger at Chili’s, but in case you haven’t tasted it, just know that these vegetarian burgers taste amazing and happen to be super easy to make at home!
These black bean burger patties will be ready to grill in just a few minutes!
By using a food processor or blender to combine black beans, onion, and garlic, you’ll quickly be able to create a yummy meatless “burger patty” bursting with flavor without any chopping! I will honestly always love ground beef burgers, but think black bean burgers are also so yummy and have a place in my heart, and stomach, too!
Tips to make the perfect black bean burger at home:
-
- Need these burgers to be vegan or eggless? Try making an easy flaxseed egg! Simply substitute with 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal + 3 tablespoons water. Allow the mixture to thicken for a few minutes and then add.
-
- Looking to make them gluten-free? Swap in gluten-free breadcrumbs and you’re in business!
-
- I am using cajun seasoning and a little hot sauce to flavor these burgers so they have a little kick. If heat isn’t your thing, season them instead as desired. I added dried parsley for mine, but I think fresh chopped parsley would be amazing too!
-
- These are fragile patties and tricky to turn, so handle with care and grease your pan well. I think thicker patties are much easier to flip. You can also chill the patties for about 30 minutes before cooking them so they’ll be more firm.
-
- I used a greased cast iron grill pan on the stove to cook my burgers. It gives them beautiful grill marks to look just like a traditional beef burger. You can definitely use a frying pan with a bit of oil instead though.
-
- This recipe made 3 larger-sized burger patties for me, though you could easily double the recipe to make more burgers. Black bean burgers freeze well, so this could be a food prep opportunity to keep some in the freezer in an air-tight container for up to a few months.
-
- I haven’t tried this, but I think this mixture would also make some yummy vegetarian meatballs to serve over spaghetti and marinara sauce. To accomplish this, I would roll the black bean mixture into meatballs instead and pan-sear or bake them until cooked. YUM!
Black Bean Burgers - Chili's Inspired Recipe
yield: 3 SERVINGS
prep time: 15 MINUTES
cook time: 12 MINUTES
total time: 27 MINUTES
Here's how to make flavorful black bean burgers using the blender!
Ingredients
- 1/2 a medium sized onion
- 2 cloves fresh garlic
- 14 oz. can black beans
- 1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce (like Sriracha)
- 1 teaspoon parsley flakes
- 2 teaspoons cajun seasoning
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- hamburger buns
- cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado (Â or any toppings desired)
Directions
1
Start by rinsing and draining the black beans well. Put onion and garlic in a food processor or high-powered blender and blend until fine. Add beans, and blend or pulse briefly until you get a mashed consistency.
2
Place the mixture into a mixing bowl and add bread crumbs, egg, hot sauce, parsley, cajun seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and stir. Mix well and shape either 4 small patties or 3 large patties (I opted to make 3 larger patties).
3
Place on a well-greased stovetop grill pan like I did or use an outdoor grill. Cook 5-6 minutes on each side until the outside is brown and the burgers are firm. You can also broil in the oven for 10-12 minutes per side on a greased, foil-lined pan.

Top with your desired toppings and condiments. Enjoy!

This homemade black bean burger will hit the spot!
I love how easy it is to turn an inexpensive can of black beans into burgers! My family absolutely loved these. I actually used to make these for my kids when they were little, and they did not even realize they were eating “meatless” burgers. HA!
I love to serve burgers on a nice toasted brioche bun. Serve yours with cheese and all the fixings your family loves such as avocado, onion, tomato, blue cheese, etc. Enjoy!
Here’s what my teammate Jenna thought of this black bean burger:
“I was so excited to try this recipe, and can confirm that they taste even more delicious than they look! I am big on condiments with burgers and for this idea, I went with the toppings suggested! Such an amazing flavor and these patties hold up beautifully! I will absolutely be making these often this summer. And this was such a cheap dinner to make!”
Try this baked feta and tomato pasta that’s also a yummy meatless meal idea!
I am definitely going to try these for a “meatless Monday”! thanks for the recipe 🙂
You’re welcome, enjoy! These are great 🙂
can i make these without the egg?
I would be scared of them falling apart and have not tried without egg…Maybe try an egg substitute? Thanks!
Add 1tbsp of flour( chickpea, all purpose, wheat,) as an egg substitute that will do the trick.
Thanks!
I heard you can mix 1 tbsp chia seeds with 3 tbsp water to sub for an egg
Oh that’s a great tip! Thanks for sharing!
Flaxseeds work as well for an egg substitute; it’s pretty common in vegan baking. Same ratio- 1 tbsp ground flax to 3 tbsp water.
Great idea with the ground flax seed! Going to try that!
im not vegan, just vegetarian, but try to use eggs as little as possible in the winter. during the spring/summer/fall i buy them fresh from a family i know, so i know the chickens are free to roam and treated well. until the spring…i think im gonna try the flour and hope for the best!!! 🙂 these look just wonderful!!!
I love Morning Star spicy black bean burgers, so I think I’ll give this recipe a try. Thanks!
Do you have a way to make these without the spicy spices? 🙂 What else could I add that would give them taste but not burn my mouth off? 🙂
Oh you could omit hot sauce. 🙂 They aren’t super spicy though..Cajun seasoning works great and not super spicy.
Thanks! We are lightweights in the spicy foods dept! 🙂
Cumin and coriander powder will work well too!
Oh my gosh yummy! Thanks for sharing. I love your fun easy and healthy recipes.
Thanks you very much.
I am a vegetarian and I keep looking for good healthy veggie recipes.
Wow! these are gonna be great, so healthy, and sooo cheap without the pricy meat. Great job again Lina!
Oh you’ll like these! Thanks!
Yum! Can’t wait to try these! But I don’t have a food processor. Can I use a blender or just use my hand chopper and chop very finely?
Yes I would chop and mash everything very fine.
I always pan fry my veggie burgers because like you I’ve found them hard to BBQ.
We do a veggie patty with 50/50 ratio of ground beef/and veggies (we like roasted garlic, onion, mushrooms and zucchini) with bread crumbs and an egg.
All us vegetarians thank you for the good recipes! 🙂
Oh yeah! You’re welcome, these are wonderful.
yes a BIG thank you!!!!
YUM!!! thanks for sharing!
Sounds great! Thank you. I love these posts….wonderful addition to the blog!
Aw thanks so much!
Sounds delicious! Will try these for dinner, tomorrow. TY
I make black bean pizza that is similar to this. Sounds peculiar but it is scrumptious.
Thanks! That sounds good too! 🙂
Hi Marla can you please share your recipe for black bean pizza 🙂
Sure. You can use whatever pizza dough that you like. I buy Mama Mary’s pizza crusts (so good!)
15 oz can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 tbsp. dried parsley
2 tbsp. salsa
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tsp. cumin
1/4 tsp. hot pepper sauce
1 1/2 c. cheese
1/2 c. chopped red pepper
1/4 c. sliced green onions
sour cream
salsa
Make your pizza dough or warm up Mama Mary’s. Combine beans, parsley, 2 tbsp. salsa, garlic, cumin and hot pepper sauce in blender. Process til smooth…I usually use a potato masher or fork. Spread bean mixture over hot crust. Sprinkle with cheese, red pepper, and green onions. Bake about 10 min. at 425 degrees.
Serve with sour cream and salsa.
Wow!! This sounds so good! Thanks for sharing 🙂
We had the burgers for dinner and everyone loved them!
Yes! I love hearing that, I’m so glad.
I’m going to make a double burger using one sirloin patty and one of these 😉
We will see if it “fries” by!
Before cooking, form your patties and put in the fridge for 30min to firm them up! This will make flipping them easy as pie!
Thanks for the tip, Shanna!
Sounds delicious – thanks!!! Bit by bit I am reducing the amount of meat in our diet. Even my husband who thinks it isn’t a meal without a giant piece of meat on his plate is coming around! He even orders the Sofritas tacos (soy) at Chipotle , not on accident and more than once! – something I had to see to believe!!
Looks so yummy! So glad to see veggie recipes 🙂
You can also bake them, I do them about 15 minutes per side but I like them very, very dry. that helps to firm them up and then you could grill them if you want the marks. After baking you can freeze them and just pop out when you want a good “burger”. Great job Lina!
This deserves a review!!! I just made these and wow! They are juicy and flavorful. Best of all, my picky 3 year-old, who is a non-onion and non-bean eater ate them. This made it to my recipe book. I made 5 thinner burgers (about the size of morning star’s frozen turkey burgers) in my George Forman in 6.5 minutes.
Aw yeah! How smart!
Made these tonight and they were great. I broiled them. A great meatless meal for Ash Wednesday. Thank you!
Great! Thanks for telling us!
We made these last night and holy moly delicious. My husband was a bit skeptical and made me try one first but once he started on it it was gone super quick. Thank you so much for the recipe! We’ve loved all that we have tried!
Thanks! My husband was the same way, ha! Glad you liked 🙂
I’ve found that if you make these ahead of time and freeze them, they will grill up wonderfully and have less chance of falling apart! Also, I love to add liquid smoke to my burgers if cooking on the stove – gives them a great grilled flavor.
Great tips!
well this looks completely AMAZING!!!!!!!!! thank you so much for sharing this !
Can I eliminate the bread crumbs? I’m trying to go carb free.
Thanks for the recipe.
Perhaps, although I have’t tried. black beans have about 44 carbs per cup, so maybe this isn’t the best recipe for low carb?
