roasted beer can chicken recipe

Beer Can Chicken makes roasting a chicken at home super tasty and super easy! Not only does the can act as a great platform to keep your chicken upright, but the beer within the can also keeps the meat moist and adds wonderful flavor. Want to skip the beer? Try root beer or another soda instead for similar results!

beer can chciken

This type of chicken is my family’s favorite because of the amazingly flavorful and crispy outside skin. The beer really does add a unique flavor and makes for a wonderful “sauce”. Leftovers are perfect the next day for chicken burritos or to serve with a salad.

We only have bottled beer. Any suggestions? I’d love to make this

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Maybe you can save a can from another drink or even another metal soup can or something from the pantry?

      • Ohiogirl

Thank you. That was the option I was thinking of too. Hoping to make tomorrow!

        • sarah

Don’t bother….made it twice and there is no taste to the meat at all. The chicken really needs to be injected for flavor.

          • meg

I have made this before and it has great flavor. To each their own.

            • sarah

Yes, the skin has a lot of flavor as noted in the recipe. The meat alone does not. So, for ppl who want to eat it skinless extra seasoning will need to be added when you serve it which isn’t a big deal.

    • Renee

You can use soda in a can. I’ve used sprite. I think it is pretty much to hold the chicken upright and to keep it moist, so any liquid should work! We do ours on the grill.

Has anyone ever tried this with a can of say, sparkling water? We don’t drink beer or pop.

    • Deb

I’ve done this recipe with a can of Country Time Lemonade and it works great. You can also use a can and fill it with orange juice.

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

        Great idea!

  4. MInnie

  5. Noel

Pour out 1/2 of the beer? What a waste!!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Well you pour back some of it in the pan and I drank the rest! Cheers 🙂 ha

      • Ger

  6. MissyO316

What do you continue to baste the chicken with as your cooking it?

  7. Jennifer

I ordered a beer can chicken kit on amazon.com and use apple juice instead of beer.

  8. Ger

I have never roasted a chicken but because it’s a Lina recipe, I’m in! All of Lina’s recipes have been a hit at our house!

I’m kinda confused, does the beer can stay the whole time in the chicken?! Sorry, I’m kinda new to cooking for myself and since I’m moving into college apartments soon, I’m thinking beer cans are probably very readily available so might as well try this out.

    • kelly

Yep, it keeps the bird upright. Good luck! Cooking rocks! And Lina’s recipes and pictures a A-mazing 🙂

      • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

        Thanks Kelly! 🙂

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes you just roast the chicken with the beer can in it. Works great! Perfect homemade meal for a college apartment!

  11. Jennifer

I have used a sunkist soda for this and it was delicious!

  12. Deb

We have been grilling these for over a year now, BUT we just discovered Weber beer can chicken seasoning at our Meijer store. The flavor is fantastic! Won’t use anything else ever! The skin is a delight in itself. I know, it’s bad for you, but I don’t eat it very often.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Cool! I’ve been wanting to try on the grill too 🙂

  13. babymair

Just remember the beer is not gluten free (for anyone who has gluten allergy or intolerance).

    • ert

Anyone with a true gluten issue should know there are several gluten free beer options.

My brother had cook one in the BBQ pit beer can ! Everyone loved it

This is so yummy and a regular at out house. I do a dry rub all over and place a little seasoned butter under the skin. I usually just use a simple poultry seasoning in the butter. A sprig of rosemary, thyme, and rosemary in the beer can with a dark ale. I dice up carrots, baby potatoes, and half a sweet onion and layer them on the bottom of the pan around the chicken. I also baste and the veggies pick up the yummy flavor of the juice drippings. Though about half way through, I do a chicken foil triangle to put over the breast. Only cause I don’t like my white meat too dry. I usually cook this up with some crescent rolls and its always a hit. Plus the leftovers are better. The veggies really absorb the flavor over night!

  18. Nancy

I’ve used O’Doells alcohol free beer, root beer & today I had a orange& beer Raddler. I didn’t care for the Raddler to drink so tried it with the chicken…. turned out fantastic. The bit of raddler & drippings was a bit bitter but added a great flavour to the gravy I made. My question…… how do you get the chicken off the hot can ??? The edge of the chicken seems to shrink & grasp around the can. Tk
