Homemade Hair Detangler Spray (Only 2 Ingredients)
If you experience tears and battles when brushing/combing your kiddo’s hair, try this easy (and super cheap) DIY hair detangler spray using items you probably already have at home!
Hip Tip: You’ll need a small spray bottle to pour your ingredient mixture into.
DIY Hair Detangler Spray
Ingredients
- 1 part conditioner
- 2 parts hot water
Directions
1
Get a small water bottle/spray bottle, open and set aside to pour mixture inside.
2
Mix one part conditioner and two parts hot water (not boiling water).
Additional Notes
For example, I mixed about 4 oz. conditioner and 8 oz. hot water in the 12 oz. spray bottle pictured in this post.
My daughter has long hair and a sensitive head (not the easiest combination!), so we have to use detangler spray to avoid tears. I love that I can make my own detangler and customize it with a conditioner that I prefer – and, it really does work!
Hip Tip: Check out the detangling hairbrush that’s been a lifesaver for my daughter’s sensitive head!
All in all, I’m really happy with how this detangler works! You can even gift some to a friend you know who’s kiddo has a sensitive scalp. Give it a try and let us know what you think!
Is it ok with “regular” conditioner, or do you specifically use “leave in” conditioner?
regular conditioner 🙂
I’m definitely going to give this a try. And we have discovered the Wet Brush and it works great! There are no more cries when brushing the tangles out of my daughter’s hair!
I love the that brush. We recently had my niece visit us and she had one. I couldn’t believe how awesome it worked on my 6 year old hair
Excuse me .. What wet brush are you guys talking about?

The sell them at Target or you can go to their website but it’s called The Wet Brush
We love the wet brush too. Our Marshalls carries it for $3.99.
Target is where I bought mine. My store had 2 different sizes and I got the smaller one for around $4.
Oh my goodness the “wet” brush is amazing. A friend got me one for my daughter’s hair after I was telling her about the drama I was having with brushing out her super curly, coily, kinky hair. I make this kind of leave-in for touch-ups, but I also use the Curly kids products. The leave in conditioner is wonderful if you have a child that has curly, dry hair. I find the curly kids products at the dollar general stores in my area. This is just what works for us! 🙂
Good to know, thanks! I use Mixed Chicks for my girls, but it’s kinda pricey. I’ve seen Curly Kids but was afraid to try it. I’ll have to check it out.
Love Mixed Chicks! Especially the leave-in conditioner…totally change my life! I get the huge bottle on Amazon and it lasts me six months. The detangler for kids is great too, but I might have to try homemade now!
I’ll have to check the curly kids stuff. I usually get mixed chicks leave in conditioner for my curly haired daughter. But last time I went to order, it was out of stock everywhere I checked! I ended up getting it from some third party seller on rakuten and the date was 2012. Annoying! I’d love if I could find something in a local store.
Oh my goodness, just got a Wet Brush and it is amazing!!! No more tears!
A totally different issue but I love the wet brush because it doesn’t pull out so much of my fine hair. Am I the only one who seemingly lost all my hair after having kids? 🙂
You are not alone!! I am 4 months post partum and my hair is falling out everywhere. I am afraid I might not have much left 🙁
But I also love the wet brush and can’t wait to try this de tangling spray for myself!

Just in case ask your physician for an iron panel. Pregnancy really depletes your iron stores and it is a long process to get the stores back up. Most people do experience some hair loss after pregnancy but if it doesn’t stabilize or is extensive get an iron panel and a thyroid panel done. Low iron after pregnancy is very common and really does a number on a person.
No you’re not the only one
Ok, I’m trying this brush. I just ordered a 2-pack with free brush cleaner for $16.00 on their website. Use code “tanglefreesummer” which takes $2.00 off a 2-pack, plus free shipping over $10.
Dang…the Wet Brush didn’t work my daughter’s curly hair. Maybe we are doing something wrong?? Just brushing like normal :-/
My daughter has very curly hair and we comb or brush it wet with loads of conditioner. We don’t touch it with a brush once dry. I’ve been following this YouTuber Manes by Mell and she’s got loads of videos that have helped my daughter and I. However she sometimes curses so don’t watch with your kids. I like her because she doesn’t strictly follow the curly girl method. She pulls it the good stuff basically and still uses silicons (which for my hair is a must!) and throws all the non science stuff out. It’s worth a shot to watch some videos. She has a sister that is on the channel a lot too who has curly hair like mine so I benefit from it too.
Awesome. I’m going to check out her videos. My daughter has curly hair and autism so it’s ALWAYS a challenge to comb her hair. We used a homemade hair mask made of coconut oil and real aloe vera (straight from the plant). We left it on for 30 minutes. It worked really well. However I suggest adding an essential oil because the scent isn’t ideal. We make homemade detangler all the time as well.
I can imagine that would be a challenge! Glad you found some things that work! I’m very sensitive to smell so I try to go fragrance free but I do like tea tree oil to “ward off” lice 😂.
Also, works great with Shea Moisture Products (my favs!) & there’s a $2 off coupon on Coupons.com right now. Paired with a future BOGO sale at Wags will make an awesome deal!
Does this have to be used right away or can it be stored and used?
Hi Theresa! You don’t have to use it right away, if you let it set a while you may want to shake it up a bit as the conditioner may settle 😉
I do this with my bottles of conditioner that have product stuck in them. I have a bottle under my bathroom sink that I use to refill an old detangler spritz bottle when it gets empty.
Good idea!
I have a recipe for a detngler that uses distilled water, glycerin, and essential oils.
I use this on my grandaughters dry curly hair. It has been a god send! Now I need to get that wet brush!
I have been doing this for my daughter for a year now, recommended by my stylist, the conditioner will look a little cloudy when first mixed with the water, making it look a tiny bit chunky, but it will completely break down within a couple hours hth.
This is old school remedies; Which work great by the way! My mom used to give me that in the shower to relax my curly hair. She would also do a cup of hot water with lemon juice towards the end to make my hair shine. Just left in there and let dry naturally on my hair. I used to get compliments about my shiny hair. Another recommendation us girls used to put homemade mayonnaise on our hair during the weekends let it sit and then rinse worked wonders for split ends and dry hair. If we wanted to dye it my refused for us to do box dye hair. So she used buy the Henna in packets that would lightening up our hair.
“The Wet Brush” can also be purchased at Toys R Us and Sally’s Beauty Supply(located all over the us). I have found that is it the cheapest at Sally’s:)
Wet brush is awesome!!! My hairdresser got me one, I have lots of hair, but it’s really fine. It’s awesome and I don’t seem to lose as much hair. Just had baby #2 and it’s coming out like crazy!
We do this all of the time! I like to add a few drops of Tea Tree Oil and spray my daughters hair each morning. Less tangles and a little added protection against the dreaded lice when school starts back.
I do this too!
Put a tsp or two of apple cider vinegar in a bottle of water. Spray in after washing for a nice detangler. Any vinegar smell disappears once it’s dry.
I just throw the conditioner and water in a small spray bottle and shake it up. No wisking involved lol.
If we use normal conditioner then it says rinse it so after spraying – no rinse – so it’s not dangerous for hair roots ?
I have curly hair and I use regular conditioner as leave in all of the time, but I only do it with conditioner that is sulfate, paraben, and silicone free. I use Deva Curl, but it’s expensive. A great much lower cost alternative brand is Cantu; they are free of all of the junk I listed above. The silicone that is in some conditioner provides that slippery, tangle-freeing feeling, however it creates a coating on my hair that messes with my curls and weighs them down, so I avoid it like the plague.
What saved me was The Wet brush!!! NO more detangling spray! 🙂
Oh yes! We love that brush too! Thanks for sharing with us, Eva!
I cannot do without the wet brush on my granddaughter’s super curly hair. But, first I have to use Infusion leave in conditioner. After trying so many different products, I found Infusion at Sally’s and Walmart. ✅

If you are a Kohls customer they have clearance $4.99 Wet Brushes, free shipping and whatever your per cent off offer is. I second the person who said the Shea products are wonderful.
Thanks for the heads up, JD! Unfortunately it appears the Wet Brushes are excluded from %-off coupons. Still a great deal with the free shipping, though!

Oops!! I’m so sorry for misleading.
Without a preservative, this will grow all sorts of icky things!
Please don’t do it!
I have curly hair and I recently stopped using shampoo. I just wash with water and my hair is so much less dry and frizzy. I think shampoo isn’t good for hair unless your hair is actually dirty like with mud or something.
Do you use conditioner, oil or any other products on your hair? If so please tell (:
