Use your DIY ranch seasoning to make a tasty veggie dip, season meat, and potatoes, or turn it into a tasty homemade ranch dressing for salads as well as to dip pizza, and wings.
My kids dip ranch into everything. I feel like ranch dressing is a staple in my house even if it’s more for dipping than for salads! Anyone else? Ha!
As always, there are tons of benefits to making seasoning blend recipes yourself as opposed to buying pre-packaged ones, and this ranch seasoning is no exception. For example, you know exactly what’s in it: just seven simple seasonings plus powdered buttermilk.
Ranch Seasoning Mix

Ditch the ranch seasoning packets at the store and opt to make your own version instead in just a few minutes!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup dried buttermilk powder (usually found in the baking aisle)
- 1 tablespoon parsley
- 1 tablespoon minced onion flakes
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons dill weed
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
Directions

Combine all ingredients together in a bowl, and use a whisk to combine.

Store mix in an airtight container, or use immediately.
Note: 3 tablespoons of this homemade mix is equivalent to 1 ranch packet.

Tips for making this homemade ranch seasoning recipe:
- Consider adding more (or less) of each seasoning to adapt to your tastebuds. For a dairy-free version of this ranch seasoning, ignore buttermilk powder and combine everything as normal!
- To make this a salad dressing, combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of mix with 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup mayonnaise. Substitute mayo with plain Greek yogurt if desired!
- To make a ranch dip try combining 1 1/2 tablespoons mix with 1/2 cup mayonnaise and 1/2 cup sour cream. This makes a thick tasty dip for veggies.
- In an air-tight container, you can store this ranch seasoning for future use up to a year, depending on the age of the spices used. Make multiple batches at once for a larger amount if desired!
I honestly think this tastes even better than the ranch packets!
If it’s possible to get a “ranch-ier” taste, this is it. Be sure to let the homemade dressing hang out in the fridge for a bit first to develop even more flavor. Then, get ready for the freshest dressing of your life!

Anyone know if there is an alternative to buttermilk powder if a person is lactose intolerant? I’d love to make this but can’t have buttermilk
powdered rice milk, but might not thicken the same degree. Could always blend in tofu when adding the wet ingredients
Maybe a few chia seeds? They thicken and have no taste.
I have left it out entirely. Just add a quarter cup more Mayo, vegan side or sour cream when you make the dressing same amount of milk or milk substitute.
I’ve used all of the options listed below. I love the Greek yogurt one the best. I’ve also tried a recipe that used cooked and blended cauliflower to thicken it up. It adds a unique taste but it’s good if you like cauliflower! Most of the time, I just use ranch seasoning as seasoning and not as a dip so I skip the thickener altogether.
I just order this, I’ve made my own dairy free ranch dip for months now but o would low to be able to have powder on hand to use in recipes. Fingers crossed it works! I make this mix all the time. I just omit the buttermilk. I add a half cup more Mayo and milk of my choice. 😁

Instead of mayo, substitute plain yogurt or sour cream for a healthier version.

Plain yogurt would be healthier. Sour cream definitely would NOT!!
I guess it depends how you define “healthy”. Sour cream has slightly more protein, about 6x less sodium, and 4x less fat.

I was surprised it includes dill. Does it have a distinctive dill taste?
Ranch dressing recipes do commonly include dill as well as other herbs, so it’s not unusual. i wouldn’t say you can’t specifically taste it strongly.

Almost all ranch has dill – even the bottled and dry packets. If you haven’t noticed it before, you won’t in this either.

Hi there, could dried nonfat milk be a substitute for the dried buttermilk? Maybe at squeeze of lemon juice to bring out the tartness?

Yet another use for this recipe- Cut fresh potatoes into wedges & toss with a couple tablespoons of olive or canola oil. Toss again with dry ranch dressing powder and bake in a single layer on a cookie sheet at 400′ until potatoes are done – about 30 minutes. Those people who want to avoid the buttermilk/dairy can use just the seasonings, it will still work!
